Don’t make The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day angry. You wouldn’t like it when it’s angry.
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
Today you get a picture with two Hulks in one, a mid-transformation Bill Bixby’s Bruce Banner and the fully transformed green monster THE HULK as played by Lou Ferrigno.
I’m very nostalgic for the old Hulk TV show, but must admit to not having visited it in a long, long time, outside of some bits and pieces here and there. It’s a delightful block of cheese, even in my rose-tinted childhood remembrances, so why not highlight it here?
Thanks to reader Travis Hopkins for sending the image along.
Hope you guys enjoy the pic (click for the bigger version)!

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here.
Tomorrow’s pic is gonna climb into your skin and walk around in it… but it’s for a sweet, non-gory movie… I promise.

Didn't Ferrigno just sign up as a deputy or something with that Joe Arpaio? So he's basically kind of an asshole.
-
also part of Dr. banner's transformation?
-
also part of Dr. banner's transformation?
-
seriously? I've been coming here for years and I still pull this shit?
-
Don't ask me why, but that shot made me suddenly realize that Bruce Bixby was a very handsome man.
-
...is Kenneth Johnson, I think. He was producer of The Incredible Hulk tv series.
-
Looks like Chaka from Land of the Lost.
-
With The Dukes Of Hazzard right after. Good times.
-
Wasn't it David Banner on the old Hulk TV show instead of Bruce? I thought it was because CBS (or maybe ABC?) thought that the name Bruce wasn't manly enough. Then there was the rapper who used the name too...
-
Derp
-
You really felt for the guy and he was the perfect contrast to the Hulk.
-
His real name was Bruce but they thought that'd be too gay in the opening credits, so they changed both his and the character's name to Bill and David respectively.
-
Wow, he's channeling a lot of Luke in that picture for some reason.
-
I was sure Stan Lee started the rumour that the network thought 'Bruce' was too effeminate a name, though he denied it in an interview a few years back. The transformation in the pilot episode was better than any in either of the two Hulk films. When Bixby's eyes turn like that... creepy stuff.

Chris Elliot in the middle? I want to fuck his Daughter.

Sissy name Bruce Actually, it DOES sound kinda gay. No offense to any Bruces out there. These days, however, just about every show has a gay character. It's in vogue. My theory is that the new Hulk TV show will feature Banner turning big and pink, prancing around and growling, "Talk to the HAND!"
-
In the new tv series, Bruce is a character that comes to your house, stays too long, eats all your snacks, drinks all your beer and runs up your pay-per-view.
-
Never liked the hulk. Never saw the Hulk as really Banner transformed. They always seemed like two completely different people/characters to me. Uh oh, Bixby's character is getting angry. Time for him to leave and let Ferrigno come on the screen.
-
Bruce Wayne. Batman wins. Period.
-
LOL. I seriously thought the same thing. He is indeed a very hansom man........i'm not gay.......not that there's anything wrong with that.....ahem.
-
So say we all.
-
oooops Geektard_Smasher is still a hateful piece of shit. Just for your edification, the Hulk was not deaf the actor was. I know you know this but you are just so obnoxiously rude. I gladly await your attack on my screen name *snicker* You are just so clever. On a serious note, I do agree that he should have been bullet proof or a little more bullet resistant. See we CAN agree.......but you are a dink.
-
He wanders into town, meets a nice girl, gets mixed up in some bad stuff, gets beat up, turns into the hulk, lays waste, tells the girl he loves her but she wouldn't understand...and cue the piano.
-
You knew what you were getting! Just like the Ramones...you knew what you were getting! Fuckin' Great!
-
Was totally awesome. Say what you will about the show itself, but Bill Bixby as David Banner (Bruce...Bruce dammit!) was some inspired casting. End of line.
-
...with the Marvel characters? Pretty good practical suit for Hulk. They should go with that look for the new show.
-
a.k.a. Bonnie "Prince" Billy.
-
most likely showrunner Kenneth Johnson
-
...and, some would say, along with Bill Cosby and Tartikoff, savior of the National Broadcasting Company in the mid-80s. After the announcement of Marc Singer joining the new V, Johnson is also currently on round-the-clock suicide watch.
-
Along with The Dukes of Hazzard and Dallas.
-
...Bruce Wayne wept.
-
That reminds me - didn't Will admit in an interview that most of the I See A Darkness album was inspired by the Hulk tv series? It all makes sense now!
-
I read MAD magazine back in the day, they did a spoof on this show. They made a line about how the name Bruce wasn't manly enough. On the TV was the Olymics, declaring "Bruce Jenner is the greatest athlete ever!" Good stuff. Loved the show. Loved "The Magician" as well. Maybe that could use a reboot?
-
Watched the first couple episodes on Netflix and was surprised how well it has stood up. Formulaic? Ya. A bit on the cheese side at times(Hulk and a Grizzly Bear comes to mind lol)? Ya. But what surprised me was how well Lou was in it. Even from the earliest episode he was at least trying for some emotion from the big green guy, and it really helped the performance. As for some of the nitpicks.. the Hulk's regeneration as a result of the gamma ray stuff was explained in the pilot.
-
Kind of like Frankenstein in Frankenstein Conquers the World.
-
and freak some people out at work.
-
The man in the middle is indeed Kenneth Johnson, who developed the character for TV. He was also responsible for the original "V" mini series (but NOT for the sequel mini-series, the following 19 episode series, and that piece of shit abortion that's on television now). He was also the man behind the original "Bionic Woman" AND the EXCELLENT "Alien Nation" and the following TV movies. The man is a legend. His audio commentaries on the Hulk, Alien Nation, and V DVD's are the best you will ever hear. Just to clear up why the name "Bruce" was changed to "David", the thing about the networks finding it "gay" is myth. KJ renamed the character, because he was trying to make the show less like a comic book, and more like a Frankenstein kinda thing, and didn't really jive with the whole comic book tradition of having the surname and forename starting with the same letter. He thought it was gimmicky. However, to appease the fans, he included a shot in the show's opening where you see Banner's grave, onwhich his MIDDLE name is revealed to be "Bruce". Hope this clears things up!
-
Is not cheesy! It's quite serious and melancholy. It's really well put together. Revisit it by all means. Whoever made that pilot must have left because after that it became a regular cheeseball 70's show.
-
...would have been if Banner had come across the Littlest Hobo in one episode. Just imagine what that would have been like...? Amazing TV.
-
Disagree there mate. Yeah the show had a couple of misfires - but each season had at least one standout episode. Check out "A Child In Need" from Season 2, and the epic two parter "Prometheous" which opens Season 4. There should be pictures of that next to the word "BADASS" in the dictionary.
-
He was a perfect choice for the role of Banner. And if you never saw him on "My Favorite Martian," I highly recommend you check it out. He was hilarious.

I thought it was a Courtship Of Eddie's Father TV reunion movie!
by Drunken Busboy
Gotta admit that Ferrigno's Hulk looks like an adult Brandon Cruz! ;)
-
He reminds me of some pig ugly girl I played tonsel hockey with once. I so wish I could say I was drunk...
-
Happy childhood memories of the show. An the original V kicked all kinds of ass. Need to pick up the DVD now and listen to the commentary, cheers for the heads up ChickenStu.
-
Erm... hey, what's that over there? *ChickenStu runs away while Geoffrey is distracted*
-
Stupid enter key. I meant to say, I loved The Magician. Cool toys in that show, especially the corvette.
-
...is clearly Lou Ferrigno's stunt double.
-
Bruce is a girly name now? Or, was then? Bruce fucking Lee is about to get up out of his grave and kick someone right in the face over this.
-
I remember one episode where he did not have enough change for the pay phone and it made him so mad that he Hulked out. That's when I knew it was not gonna last much longer.
-
I remember the "Bruce is a gay name" phase, and that was what everyone at the time thought the reason was for the name change. But Kenneth Johnson has since said repeatedly that he thought Bruce Banner just sounded too comic-booky alliterative like Peter Parker and Clark Kent.
-
Bwa ha ha! Made my day.
-
and Bixby was the best David (Bruce) Banner ever. And the the Ang Lee pic doesn't get the respect it deserves but people love the Wolverine movie. I don't get it.
-
Even as a kid I caught onto the fact that each episode was had exactly two Hulk-outs in the budget. If there were more it was a special episode, probably two parts and written by Kenneth Johnson himself. One time he Hulked out twice without getting to change his pants in between, so the second time his pants tore off and he just had underpants. Pretty risque for the Hulk.
-
Thanks Quint! Still the BEST Adaption of The Hulk ever!!!
-
I'm glad todays pic was a classic and not some shit from the 2 movies.
-
it's unbelievable. I believe that man is turning into the hulk
-
I am free.
-
It says David Bruce Banner. Interesting factoid.
-
It was so completely different than the comics, and I was at an age when such things bothered me immensely. The TV Hulk struggled to tip over a car, where his comics counterpart could lift it over his head and toss it a few hundred years without straining. And bullets actually hurt the Hulk? That's crazy talk! And for a supposed pacifist, Banner got angry an awful lot! I think if I was the Hulk, I'd change maybe once a year, if that. Why so angry, Bruce?!? (NOT DAVID!!!)
-
...it used to scare the SHIT out of me as a kid.
-
The Hulk's true name is actually Robert Bruce Banner. He just went by Bruce. So why they didn't call him "Robert" on the show instead of "David" we'll never know.
-
What. A. Joke.
-
oh- its my cat.
nm.
are those ferigno's real teeth?
-
way back then, there was a kung-fu spoof film titled THEY CALL ME BRUCE. and bruce was, or at least sounded, gay (never seen the thing myself). it was funny, and very popular. and in the seventies, being a 'mo was, shall we say, not something to brag about. God help you, if you were in high school after BRUCE came out, so to speak, and that was your name. BRUCE CAMPBELL and the EVIL DEAD films are what finally banished the stigma
-
...and the white 'vette with 'Spirit' on the licence plates! Bixby (as Anthony Blake) did much of the magic himself. It had a run on Sci-Fi back in the day, but I don't remember it holding up very well. Lots of bell bottoms and such. But Bixby was way fucking cool.
-
...and another thing. Bill Bixby is DA MAN.
-
The Original 'V' (can't be bothered with the reboot - but Marc Singer's on it now??), and Alien Nation are two of my favorite shows. I read 'V - the Next Generation' last year, which was based on the treatment he shopped around to the studios, and I liked it. It was a direct sequel to the mini series. I have the series on DVD, but I'll be honest, I've not made it past episode 3 or so...just so..80's. And stock footage...lots of stock footage...
(I'd still smash out Jane Badler, she's a hot old broad!)
-
is the one where he had to leave town at the end while sad music played.
-
one of the greatest actors of all time. And a good man.
-
they should get Shaquille O'Neal as KAZAAM! the rapping genie.
-
Finally a "Title" that I can actually know what the BTSPOTD is!
-
I watched it as a kid just like I watched lame Spiderman show but it was sucky
-
God, Bixby was awesome. There will never be a better Banner.
-
I vaguely remember as a kid seeing a trailer for a special episode(s) of the Incredible Hulk where he was on board what looked like a spaceship and was kinda trapped between Banner and the Hulk, or was the Hulk with Banner's voice...??
-
At least there actually was a HULK on the set to photograph with the TV show. I was expecting a shot of Jeniffer Connely staring up at fucking tennis ball on the end of a pole. (sigh).
Bill Bixby was 'da man!
-
Wondered what the Bee Gees were up to these days. Love the way Hulk actually looks more like Oddbod from 'Carry on Screaming'. Great pic.
-
Watching Bill Bixby walking off into the distance with the piano playing at the end of most episodes is one of the most haunting and beautiful pieces of television ever made.
-
At least when it comes to playing Bruce/David Banner. Someone had to say it, might as well be me.
And if anyone not old enough to remember the TV show has a problem with my opinion, kiss my mid-30s ass.
-
...where Fred Rogers visits the set of the TV show, and they show Lou Ferrigno going through the makeup process?
Yes, I'm dating myself, but for some great behind the scenes action, I think it's on YouTube...check it out.
-
The one with two Hulks, and the one where Banner was transformed halfway between Hulk and Banner.
-
I read Hulk comics before the series even came out. TV crowd loved it, but it was not The Hulk.
-
Oh Hello Bruce!
How are you Bruce?
A bit crook, Bruce.
Where's Bruce?
He's not 'ere, Bruce.
Blimey, it's hot in here, Bruce.
Hot enough to boil a monkey's bum!
That's a strange expression, Bruce.
Well Bruce, I heard the Prime Minister use it. "It's hot enough to boil a monkey's bum in here, your Majesty," he said and she smiled quietly to herself.
She's a good Sheila Bruce, and not at all stuck up.
-
It looked like it got stuck between an afro and a perm and couldn't make up its mind.
-
remember that one where he got stuck in mid-transformation because of the meteorite? That was some cool shit.
-
Yes... and FUCKING YES. As cinematic as any movie. But what do you expect when Kenneth Johnson writes and directs?
-
Out of those 3 Guys, the man in the middle creeps me out the most.
-
What bloody pictures.....
