Darkness falls across the land, The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day is close at hand!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
When I was a kid you weren’t cool if you didn’t have the Thriller album. It’s funny today because the cover is as about manly and cool as a daisy, but it was a status symbol at the time.
Michael Jackson’s album is fantastic, but what really pushed it over for me personally was the great long, long video supporting the title song Thriller, itself a mini-horror movie starring Michael Jackson sporting the brilliant Rick Baker’s make-up.
John Landis directed the video at the height of his power, post American Werewolf and Blues Brothers and it has become iconic. There’s the playful tone, the iconic dance choreography, the instantly recognizable make-up and, of course, the great Vincent Price’s narration.
I wish more Halloween themed songs would be recorded. I love having something like Thriller that instantly puts me in the spooktacular spirit. That’s not a trend I see kept up much anymore. Time to bring it back!
I’m not exactly sure where this picture originates. There’s obviously a slight watermark on it, but I can’t make it out. If anybody knows, let me know and I’ll throw a link back to the original.
But here’s MJ, with the great contacts in, having a quiet moment with John Landis. I can almost hear Vincent Price’s maniacal laughter when I look at this image.
Enjoy and click for the slightly bigger version!
If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here.
Tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes Pic will be a series of imagines from one of my favorite movie make-ups. Don’t call him meatloaf, though. He hates that.

This is how I choose to remember MJ - not as the nutcase that appeared in the late 80s and 90s - but here, when, for some reason, he was really cool.

the topics. no one ever talks about his song topics. haha some crazy stuff.
he sings about the undead coming to get you, about hookers, about a chick who got murdered, about gang fights, about some hoe lying about him being the father. ahahah he had issues ALREADY

While he was, what, 10 years old? 11? 12? There's Jermaine getting his dick sucked and little MJ had to try and sleep through it. Then he'd wake up the next morning for a fresh round of ass kickings from Joe, and his brothers, who all had their ashes hauled the night before.
Oct. 2, 2010, 3:47 p.m. CST

stuff, I could dig -that's cool Landis horror material - but this is the nadir point for this column, sorry Quint. You won't find one MJ song on my frickin' hard drive...he's up there with Cliff Richard. Both equally horrific...but not in a cool way

I knew there'd be comments about both a) child murderer b) child abuser You didn't fail me.. Thriller is a fantastic video, I watch it every Haloween sandwiched between two horror films, kinda like a Grindhouse thing I guess.. Watching this makes me wish Jackson had done more videos like this in his last year, apart from Rock My World there was nothing from the past 10 years that was cinematic (This Is It doesn't count!) MTV really needs to show videos again, it's becoming a forgotten art..

is still the king of large scale music videos. Even Michael couldn't match it, and he did try.
Oct. 2, 2010, 4:35 p.m. CST
It irks me when people say there aren't anymore good videos. While they are few and far inbetween , they still exist. Even MJ couldn't ever top Thriller with all his subsequent attempts.
Last really great video I remember was Metallicas All Nightmare long. And over the years theres been some great stuff. PJ's Do the Evolution and those crazy claymated Tool videos,... I'm sure If I thought harder I could come up with more.

Oct. 2, 2010, 4:51 p.m. CST
...that's potentially intriguing...but not a horrible theme for October - I'd rather see BTS pics from Killer Klowns From Outer Space...actually that sounds kinda cool...the Chiodo Brothers were the dog's cojones!

but am partial to Smooth Criminal. There are moments of pure exhilaration in that video with the choreography and the visual design of it. And for fuck's sake... I'm SO SICK AND TIRED OF THE SAME OLD UNEDUCATED, UNRESEARCHED BULLSHIT spewed about Jackson. He was an odd duck, yes, but that's a long way from pedophilia... in the end, the media literally killed this man, crushed his fucking skull into oblivion, and doesn't even have the goddamned decency to issue formal retractions of NEWS that was patently false yet they reported it anyway for nothing more than salaciously derived ratings.
Read THIS STORY - http://tiny.cc/zpcwg, the only one that uses FACTS... yes, verifiable FACTS... the only picture it paints is one of an out-of-control media that does not give a shit who it hurts nor do they ever feel they're wrong or that they should apologize for the damage done.
Oct. 2, 2010, 5:24 p.m. CST
You can OD on media?
Oct. 2, 2010, 5:26 p.m. CST
is on Youtube. Wish it were on DVD too, though. My favorite moment is when Landis is telling how Jackson first contacted him and he says something like, "Michael said I want it to be good, I want it to be, etc." and you just hear Michael in the background softly say, '... the best,' and you know he meant it. Something about that quiet creative determination that's awesome. If you haven't seen 'This is It', some of that same determination to do something better than anyone else and to want to truly and respectfully give the audience their money's worth is still there on display just before he died.
Oct. 2, 2010, 5:30 p.m. CST
Halloween, Pumpkinhead and the Monster Mash cover by the greatest band ever, the Misfits!!! and We Are The Wicked by Michale Graves
Oct. 2, 2010, 5:30 p.m. CST
OD on media? What the fuck do you think it does to someone when year after year after year of the same hurtful shit is being spewed about you but never anything that you do which is good? How about that the facts paint a completely different picture of what's being reported? If you're gonna comment, at least go read the truth instead of regurgitating tabloid news. Same old bullshit... the only one drinking kool aid are the people who buy into the media's snowjob. In all fairness, I think that in the late 80's, he and his handlers played with fire by feeding bullshit stories to the tabloids, probably as some kind of weird inside joke, but it quickly backfired.
Oct. 2, 2010, 5:33 p.m. CST
was a bit bit of an ego trip of a project but what I always liked about it was that it was accepted by black listeners. Like when Rhianna made the Disturbia video a lot of blacks said, "oh she a satanist" and "dat's what dem white folk do" Damn I miss the 80's when peoples heads weren't so far up their own asses.

Oct. 2, 2010, 6 p.m. CST
This song is one of his weakest and I do believe he made some great ones. The video is tediousl. And it had the unintended consequence of making formation dancing a staple of music videos and music performances. It's allowed singers who can't sing to distract an impressionable audience into thinking they have talent. I won't watch or listen to any artist that relies on formation dancing as a crutch.
Oct. 2, 2010, 6:06 p.m. CST
Thriller, Beat It, Billy Jean, PYT... Usher's newest album, Raymond Vs. Raymond, was a noble attempt at the modern pop album singles-wise: Papers, Hey Daddy (Daddy's Home), Lil Freak [Ft. Nicki Minaj], OMG [Ft. Will.I.Am]

And why can't I stop pointing this out. It's because I really could count on my hand the entire Michael Jackson fanbase left in the United States. This picture wouldn't have been posted two years ago, and if it was it would have been written in a derogatory tone. Yet since he died, everyone acts like they have always been a fan. And these weird, fake people are probably voters. Scary eh?

is if you research enough, you find this man probably didn't do anything to children at all. You don't need to research too hard either, but if you don't give a shit about him, or are just lazy, it's probably easier to just sit back and go with what you've always been fed. In the end, i do believe he was killed intentionally, he's certainly worth more dead than alive. All that publishing he owned, Half the SONY catalogue. He was asset rich and cash poor when he went. Motive right there.

When MTV was cool - VJs, Music News, world premier videos that you actually would gather around to see......for a lot of you, "videos" were those small movie like things they would show when a band's music was playing. You may be confused by the fact that all MTV is these days is 24/7 idiot reality television.

It was strange. My mom was screaming for blood when he was acquitted back in... 05 was it? How he was a child abuser and he'd gotten away with it and he deserved to suffer. But the moment he died, she'd only talk about how great he was and how unfairly he was treated and so on. And yeah, it turns out the kid who made the accusations in 1993 made it up, but she didn't know that at the time of his death. It's funny how these things work.

and to make that claim is irresponsible. it is also a sad testimony to the sheer ignorance people have regarding the court cases michael was involved in.
michael was never convicted in a court of law, only in the court of public opinion, where peoples overblown sense of self-righteous indignation couples with their fragile need to prove that they're a "good guy" against the "bad guys" to their family, friends and peers. in the court of public opinion, an accusation is sadly all that is often needed for one to be labeled a "bad guy". classic demonization at work.
and then of course there are those that already didn't like michael because he was a pop star or he was eccentric and they let their personal bias cloud their sense of reason.
michael was an eccentric guy creating a childhood for himself which led him to have unorthodox friendships with children. whether any of those friendships involved sex has yet to be proven or given reliable testimony. he also donated millions to charities, the majority of them being children's charities and was a major support for many kids suffering with cancer.
his perceived naivete made him a target by leeches that were down on their luck. the news media that fell in love with michael's rise was now foaming at the mouth to see him fall. it didn't take them long to turn people's witch hunt sensibilities regarding child molestation on to michael causing them to lose sight of the facts and damaging jackson's reputation in the eyes of a fickle and ignorant populace...but don't take my word for it
http://tinyurl.com/2a8ha9p

... that we can let MJ off the hook because he had such a traumatic childhood. Honestly, the man, regardless of his artistic output, had unhealthy relationships with children. You can say prove this, prove that all you like, but in the end, the man did things with children, that grown men simply shouldn't do. Sleeping in a bed with a child that's of no relation to you? Realllllly fuckin' creepy. Cutting up your face to retain that "peter pan" look? Really fucking creepy. Look, all im saying is that the man was fucking unhinged, and kids shouldn't have been around that warped mentality. But if there are those that disagree, all I can say, is that YOU ARE WRONG.

You are right.

Can you really be so blind to that? The man was all about himself, his needs, his desires, his appatites, regardless of the price paid. And he paid. Often. But he was a pop culture staple, right? a musical genius? so everything else that made up the man should just be flushed away, 'cause he was talented? Maybe a deeper investigation into MJ's life is needed her. Some real, non-tabloid truth about the man.

Those of you who are still talking shit about MJ really need to look up the article that SK229 posted. The problem is, a lot of people can't think for themselves and as such are spoon fed bullshit by the media who create scandals and operate on fear.

ANY supporter of Michael Jackson is pro-child molestation. Sorry but I can't abide freaks of that flavor, nor the sheep that follow them. You really are a true idiot.

Yeah, I said it. I'm a music buff (much more than film, really) and the first album I ever owned (and still have it on my original vinyl) was Thriller. So when I say I have nostalgic attachments to that album, it cannot be understated. Having said that, however, IMO Bad is the superior album - songwise anyway. Every single song could be a single (and nearly each one was). I still listen to Bad and it sounds fresh. I have to be in the right mood for Thriller these days. But, yeah, great pic. Very, very cool.

ANY one who puts a blanket judgment over people without putting their emotions aside and unbiasedly looking over all the facts (such as the other party admitting they were lying about the whole thing) is pro-Nazism. Sorry, but I can't abide people who follow hype blindly and then decree their judgments on others. And, I truly don't think you're an idiot; I mean that. But you need to tone down the blanket statements and maybe step down from the high horse you seem to be on.

I think I might agree with some others here in that the behind the scenes pics (though AWESOME) might be a bit too frequent. It's taking away from some of the excitement of it, IMO. Maybe space them out a little more? Might be better, and I think it'll help with the burnout factor. Just a thought.

MJ was without a doubt a pedophile. The question is whether he actually did anything unlawful. Being a pedophile isn't against the law. It's an inclination, sick and twisted as it is. The way he talked about children and his desire to share beds with them, it was obvious that he had a love for children that was clearly not the societal norm. It may not have even been a sexual thing. It was not proven that he ever acted on what could be dangerous desires. It may have only gone as far as snuggling with children. But by the definition of pedophile (fetishistic love of children), MJ sure fits it pretty darn well.

I had put my emotions aside and unbiasedly looked over the facts. I watched the trials, and have come to my own conclusions. I stand by what I say. And not many of us Jews are pro-Nazi, but thanks for jumping to the hysterical extreme to make a point. Oh and MJ was a pedo.

Jordan Chandler at no point has recanted his statement about being molested by Michael. One anonymous blogger posted it, and in the wake of Michael's death, the media grabbed a hold of it, some reporting it as genuine news, but he has, at no point, ever stated that he lied. PS-I loved Thriller (the album) back in the day, but my god that album has held up horribly. Other than the two hit singles (Beat It, Billie Jean) there isn't a thing left on that album worth listening. Born In The USA, Joshua Tree and So are just a few of the albums from the 80's that hold up significantly better over time.

Always have been, always will be. I never stopped supporting him and didn't believe the BS spread about him for YEARS. I bought albums like History In The Mix, Invincible, The Ultimate Collection and Number Ones (CD & DVD) etc when even the casual MJ fan turned their backs on him. Tons of hypocrites who now supposedly like MJ. The man did We Are The World and is supposed to be an alleged pedophile? WTF??? How quickly people forget! I've read a ton on this shit and everything in both cases (the first accusation and the 2nd one with the trial) and both were money hungry jerks. The father in the first accusation KILLED HIMSELF after MJ died and the son that was forced to lie about MJ admitted his dad made him lie. How come we don't hear about that so much? If I had any little doubt on MJ's innocence I couldn't back him even if I liked his music. And if MJ was a pedophile he would have targeted his own kids. Yet they love him and no sign whatsoever that he did anything but be the best father they could have.
