The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day sleeps wit da fishes!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
To give you an example of how fluid this daily column is I had a picture all picked out for today. It featured Francis Ford Coppola on the set of The Godfather and while not an incredibly brilliant picture it’s really neat for fans of the film because the still was taken during a key recognizable moment. I’ll say no more since I do plan on using that image in a future article.
Then a reader by the name of Jim Lowe sends me this better Godfather BTS image out of the blue and I slyly swap it with the one I was going to use.
If you haven’t seen The Godfather then shame on you. Say ten Hail Marys, get thee to the video store, update your Netflix queue and atone for your sins. Also, don’t look at this picture. It’s a big spoiler. Come back later. It’ll be linked at the bottom of every BTS column I post, just like the rest.
You gone? Good. Now it’s just us Godfather seers and we can talk about how sweet this picture is.
I gotta say I miss the days of fishing line bullet hits. I remember hearing that Tom Savini used something very similar to take off the top of the Helicopter Zombie’s head in Dawn of the Dead…
The idea is the filament line is pulled revealing an already made-up red hole underneath. When done fast enough it just look like bullet holes appear.
Now say goodbye to Jimmy "The Dream" Caan!
Here’s the pic:

Poor guy! I always liked Sonny!
If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here.
I’ll make amends for my disappointed Expendables review with tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes pic!

just kidding
-
one of the greatest scenes ever and these didnt used explosive squibs like nowadays just amke it more awe4somest!
-
that's some great old timey effects.
-
Coolest BTS pic I've seen in a long, long time. That's pretty badass.
-
but it still made my day.
-
I was not aware of this particular technique, but it sure as hell was effective. Sonny's execution was flawless!
-
They still used squibs on his body, under clothes. The fishing line was for "exposed flesh" makeups.
-
Very cool pic. Another cool one would be a pic of Jimmy Caan and Carlo sitting around during the sidewalk beating scene, having a smoke or something.
-
On the rooftops of Little Italy. Can't wait!
-
"Jesus wept."

Hey I thought you said the behind the scenes pic was dead!
by BrandonGK
No, what I said was: "He sleeps with the fishes". You see…
-
or a Jimmy Can't?
-
Never knew that's how they used to do bullet hits. Learn something new every day.
-
Absolutely.
-
appear in the latest Empire movie magazine. Some very cool shots including Brando playing with a kitten, and Coppola setting up the final shot from GF3.
-
it was better the first time I saw it last week in the latest issue Empire magazine.
-
If not, it's certainly up there with the best of them.
-
Watch out- here comes dat spider man!
-
You talk about vengance. Is vengance going to bring your son back to you or my boy to me? I forgo the vengance of my son. But my youngest son had to leave this country because of this Sollozzo business. So now I have to make arraingments to bring him back safely cleared of all these false charges. But I'm a supersticious man. And if some unluck accident should befall him, if he should be shot in the head by a police officer, or if should hang himself in his jail cell, or if he's struck by a bolt of lightning... *then I'm going to blame some of the people in this room*... and that, I do not forgive. But, that aside, let say that I swear, on the souls of my grandchildren, that I will not be the one to break the peace we have made here today.
-
Well, I hope you didnt. Its only a fucking photo.
-
... and a bit of color correcting this could've been an awesome poster. If Sonny would've been the Godfather, instead of Michael.
-
Things are moving kind of slowly, then all of a sudden you get this Wild Bunch+Bonnie & Clyde moment on a main character.
-
Can't recall anybody in film being shot as many times. Maybe in Bonnie and Clyde.
-
..i like the savage kick in the head as a final Fuck You! to Sonny
-
That movie gets better with every viewing. Coppola is a master, and his first two Godfather films (along with Apocalypse now) are incredible.
-
Probably the 25th or so time that I've seen it. Its one of those movies that forces me to stop what I'm doing and watch it whenever its on the tube. Just so nuanced, such amazing performances... as for the picture, gotta love it. Caan's hot-headed Santino Corleone is probably my favorite character in the movie. especially after the middle-of-the-street public beatdown he gives Carlo Rizzi.
-
...you don't even need to say much about. Just smile contentedly. <p> Cause if someone don't know from seeing it...you ain't gonna' be able to teach 'em.
-
At least that's what I remember reading in the Cinefex article (Dick Smith retrospective). I think the same trick was used in Blade Runner when Leon gets dispatched (you can actually see the fishing line on one or two frames, if memory serves correctly).
-
James Caan has gotten? He used to be a regular guest at the Playboy mansion, probably still is.
-
in anything
-
in anything
-
in anything
-
Peter Weller in Robocop; Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino; the unlucky bastard that Arnie uses as a human shield in Total Recall.
-
lol. "Wait...PULL DA STRING! PULL DA STRING!" <p> "Karloff...sidekick....FUCK YOU! Karloff does not deserve to smell my shit!"
-
How about Kiney in Robocop(unrated). <p> I defy anyone to show me a clip of a human being shot more time continuously onscreen.
-
To stay out of Husband, Wife business but that hot-headed temper of his got the best of him! <p> Some of the most amazingly shot, brutal violence I ever saw on screen.
-
You have ten seconds to comply.
-
is where it's at! <p> ED 209 Shot the poor schmuk full of bullets for what had to be an eternity.... <p> Rambo was pretty nasty, Sly turned a guy into swiss cheese at close range.
-
Epic extermination. Turned that guy into fucking hamburger. First time I watched my Criterion DVD, I started laughing about ten seconds into that bloody mess.
-
Which is always cut out of the televised version! They show him riddled with a thousand bullets but they edit out the guy kicking Sonny's head when he's on the ground! Like that's less violent!
-
Because they are both EQUALLY Cool!
-
Seriously - there are 2 new books, the godfather returns and godfather's revenge from which they can mine new material from.<p> Those 2 novels expanded on Sonny, Fredo and Tom Haggen. <P>They can make it an elaborate and EPIC 6 part crime family saga. This time it can be in chronological order and begin with Vito as a young boy in part 1 and works it's way up to the events of GF 3 by part 5 or 6....but events can also play out differently and better. They could also go beyond GF3 and allow us to see Vincent Corleone running the family and perhaps then the saga can ultimately end.<P> They just have to lock in a solid cast for the series and it'll be money in the bank for paramount. <P>That's what I'd be saying if I was fucking insane.
-
I thought you were one hundred percent seriouis until the last sentence. Well done sir.
-
He was cheating on his wife with that fatty.
-
He got the horns.
-
Never did see him climb out.
-
What I wouldn't give for some of his sauce. Pauly from Goodfellas too. Garlic sliced so thin it would liquify with just a little oil in a hot pan.
-
James Caan or James Hetfield?
-
Go see RoboCop.
-
Sonny down.
-
I've only seen the beginning of The Godfather and I looked at the pic.
-
And Fat Rancor Keeper - you're just kidding about the reboot, right? This is one movie you DON'T MESS WITH!!! Even Coppolla himself went to the well one too many times (although I don't have the hatred for Godfather III that many seem to have). And one more thing - Sonny's fate should befall Scarlett Johanssons Breast Milk! Not literally, but damn that dude is a douche!!!
-
...as a birthday gift. Damn near unreadable.
-
That belongs to Heat, but yeah Godfather is great.
-
...in not featuring Robocop goodness.
-
Awesome post. You had me going right until the end. The original Godfather novel was a great read, BTW. Everything from the first movie, all the flashback stuff from Part II, and some other stuff sprinkled in.
-
...lol yeah I was jk - but I wouldn't put it past Hollywood to do something like what I mentioned in the future.<P> If they did reboot - who would you guys cast in the lead roles? or do you just think it's impossible to recast since it'd likely not do well?
-
Sonny was hotheaded but he had heart and was somewhat smart, Fredo was dumb but had heart, Michael was cold and smart but no heart while Vito managed to be calm, smart, and have heart which is a powerful character.
-
See: "The Departed"
-
The last film I remember seein that used this gag was Scream. Well used it in such a way that you could see the line. It's at the end when Billy gets shot in the head.
-
but this picture is available in The Godfather Family Album. I do hope you have permission to use it.
-
I dont know why I think the pic looks like him, but it does.

Ben yeah i was pretty down when i read Quints WD set report
by TheJudger
and how that they decided on a cgi head splat bullet hit for the little girl vs using a squib. I screamed "dont they know about air compressors and tubes???????????????????????" it didnt need an explosive powder squib effect to pull it off and insure the girls saftey. Oh well....
-
Still a brilliant shot, but not exactly 'rare' anymore Quint ;) (PS There's a bunch of other really nice ones in the issue too from Godfather and ESB)
-
Squibs and fake blood make a mess, easier to do retakes if you're gonna be creating headshots etc digitally afterwards. Makes sense, but smacks of laziness to me and especially surprising coming from a perfectionist like Scorsese. Not to mention that IT JUST LOOKS FAKE!
-
Yes, I sent this shot in to Quint after seeing it in Empire. I assumed that it still qualified under at least one of Quint's requirements ("iconic, the rare or the just plain cool") even though the possibility existed that someone else on the planet may have possibly also seen it already. There might be some people that come to this site who (whisper it) don't read the same magazines as you.
-
No question the real stuff is better. CGI has become a pathetic crutch for films and has robbed them of so much artistry. The guys who hack away on the computers are artists, too, and some of them are amazingly adept. But there is something missing by not building these effects in the real world. The art of it, the unpredictablility, the immediacy is gone. It's a great feeling to build a gag, then successfully execute it on set. Too much business, too little risk-taking in Hollywood these days. Boo.
-
You can briefly see the fishing line on the neck od DeNiro on that final showdown.
-
The unrated scene of Kinney vs. ED-209 is the most bullets a person gets hit with, in one scene, on film. <p> It's so absurdly violent you have to laugh. In a good way. But hey, that's life in the big city.
-
I love you and I don't care WHO KNOWS IT!! Do you like smiling? Smiling's my FAVORITE!!
-
Drop your weapon...you have fifteen seconds to comply
-
And it's about damn time we got flying cars.<P>I remember seeing Godfather for the first time on HBO or something at the age of 11 and thinking, "That's a tad much." Still, great movie, great series. Keep it up.
-
to Moe Greene (Alex Rocco), maybe because I wear glasses myself, and c'mon, he gets shot IN THE EYE.
-
Today they could use computers to remove the fishing line.
-
Do you REALLY want your home town to look like Coruscant, or Bruce Willis' city from The Fifth Element?<p> http://tinyurl.com/34u2a8
-
Don't get me wrong, the second is just as much a classic as the first, I just have always liked the first one just a bit better.
-
I think I know why. The second is darker and more epic, but what is it missing..? Marlon. He added the humanity, as such as it was, missing in the second. No disrespect to DeNiro.
-
so grate him some cheese, Empire loyalists, break out the brussel sprouts and thank God, the Invisible Asshole, that we don't hear from that avenging phantom Jim Bolo again. Burma Shave!
-
He stole Ali Macgraw from Robert Evans, and still kept his job on the Getaway. He wouldn't do Great Escape, unless he could ride a motorcycle (birth of a classic scene)
