The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day enters a dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
I swear Light & Shadow, my continuing series of episode by episode reviews of original Twilight Zone seasons, will return. It’s been a while, but starting about a month before Comic-Con I’ve been traveling the globe and have put those on the back burner as multiple set visits, film festivals and conventions dominated my immediate attention.
In fact, I just received the first season on Blu, so now I have zero excuse to plow through the rest of season 1!
In the mean time here’s a fantastic candid shot of Rod Serling in his office that fascinates me. His body language, his lack of shoes, the furrowed brow, the cigar, the Emmys… everything about this shot makes me smile.
The dude was a man ahead of his time and changed the way we look at genre stories forever.
Here’s the pic! Click for the bigger version! Enjoy!

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here.
Tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes pic can’t trust a man who wears both a belt and suspenders!

That's why we get lame shows like Person's Unknown.
-
what a way to ruin a great photo- the whiteout treatment on the shadow of the shelves in the background as well as under neath him, today deforming his ass and posture in the process. wonder who fucked up that old photo print?
-
sitting on the floor<P> smoking a cigar<P> with no shoes on his feet
-
What a class act he was. His mind was a god damned story telling assembly line!
-
"Saw it coming..."
-
I thought it was going to be a headless shot of Vic Morrow.
-
i mean 'underneath' and 'totally deforming'. man, am i on crack?! LOVE twilight zone though. buying the complete series was the best purchase i ever made.
-
Maybe Rod Serling really WAS a Morlock!!!<p> ;-)
-
...but it sure smells good!
-
in his entire life where Rod Serling WASN'T smoking?...Guy probably smoked in his sleep!
-
That is hands down one of the worst photo shop jobs I've seen in a long time. You can see the back of other guys head, behind Rod's. Not to mention that the head is horribly out of proportion to his body. Do Over!
-
looks totally painted over
-
That IS a pretty cool pic. I'm loving this little series.
-
Definitely one of the better pics.
-
Quite clearly. The cut out lines are visible around his left knee/thigh and the previous poster is right: you can see the back of whoever's head they've pasted Rod's face over.

HERE'S THE PICTURE I WOULD HAVE RUN.......
by CreationistTechnophobicManiacs

-
really?
-
Dude, you are SO full of shit.
-
Why do you bother? Do you seriously believe that shit is funny?
-
Maybe it's artwork based on a photo.....
-
I think I have the worst eye in the world for spotting Photoshopped pics. But even I can tell that this picture isn't right. Which is a bummer, because I'd love to see some (real) TTZ/Serling stuff pop up here.
-
How about this one?? http://tinyurl.com/29278bf
-
Quint, I waited. Been saving my pennies. Please tell me it was worth it. Plus, I wonder what Rod would have thought of Lost?
-
Its always amazed me that they never managed to get any modern iterations of Twilight Zone to work. The movie had one good segment, (and it was pretty much a shot-for-shot from the episode it was based on) and the series from the 80s had a couple of good episodes, and then that's it. You'd think somebody else would have been able to get the mix right for a functional comeback. Maybe on HBO or something. The one with Forest Whittaker (sp?-sorry man, love ya') wasn't good at all.
-
Imagine what he could have brought us later in life. Him and George Orwell are two that died too young.
-
We should all say that occasionally. <p> The guy really was an incredible writer.
-
Man, these behind the scenes pics are kind of embarassing...hes obviously not even in that camera shot. someone just stuck him in there very poorly.
-
kind of like an old Sears catalogue.
-
He went to Antioch...that school will make anyone interesting. After a couple late nights out in Glen Helen, I was seeing some pretty whacked out shit too..
-
its looks like his head is pasted on...look at the top left part of his head on the pic and his neck. It would also explain why the shadow had to be pasted...cause it didnt fit his hairline.
-
Here's another angle of the same setting and everything. Can't tell if this one is touched up too or not: http://cineweekly.com/images/serling.jpg
-
I've been a fan of this column since day one, waiting every day and checking to see if you've posted the daily pic yet. But, I don't mean to be a horse's ass, while this is a cool pic, what is it behind the scenes of?
-
There are much cooler and real pictures if you type in serling2.jpg and serling3.jpg on that same site.
-
Damn, to this day that episode gives me chills. Will forever have a phobia of Mannequins...those guys sure knew how to create suspense and scares!
-
We had a really cool 50th anniversary celebration for the show here back in October with a whole weekend dedicated to the Twilight Zone. Serling is about the only good thing to come out of this area!!!
-
Looks like a Dave Berg contribution from MAD Magazine.
-
The photo is fake. Terrible photo shop job. You would think the geeks on this site would know that before they post bunk. Come on...
-
Fake or not, Rod Serling is the definition of a cool motherfucker. I became familiar with the original TZ series once Sci-Fi started their (now annual) 4th of July marathons, and its a 4th tradition that I keep to this day. there are some seriously, startlingly brilliant works of science fiction from that show. it boggles my mind to think that some of that groundbreaking material found its way to the airwaves way back then, and its probably thanks to Serling. my favorite episode is probably "The Howling Man," but there are literally dozens that I could choose. I'm sad to admit that I've yet to become acquainted with The Outer Limits... thats something I'll have to commit myself to invest my time and money into one day, cause I fucking love the Twilight Zone.
-
I actually just read that all 49 of the original "Outer Limits" episodes are available for free on Hulu. see, these are the times when I really want to kick my own ass for having a part time job and starting college. lack of free time is bullshit.
-
Please be careful with the pix you pick for the behind the scenes pic of the day! Almost everything you have posted so far has been awesome...but this...it's just awful. Yikes!
-
it's a real pic, it was just edited back in the pre photoshop days. Shadows too dark? Lighten them up with whiteout. Not enough contrast in the image, paint in some black to darken certain areas up. see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photo_mani pulation#History

GAYEST FAKEST PICTURE OF ALL TIME
-
For posting. I find it inspirational. I'm going to print it out.
-
Period.
-
Probably thinks he's in an episode.
-
an ordinary man in an ordinary place...<p>on an ordinary day.<p>on an ordinary floor.<p> smoking an extra ordinary cigar...

I am guessing tomorrow's pic will be Once Upon a Time in the Wes
by tritium
"Can't trust a man who wears both a belt and suspenders"...has got to be a pic of Henry Fonda as Frank.
-
it's not like they photoshopped his head on a womans body or anything. He's sitting on the floor smoking. Oh that must be a fake, Rod would never have done something as shocking as taking his shoes off. Besides, an earlier talkbacker already gave us a link to the same photo from a different angle. Obviously its not fake. Geez!
-
These shows got so much from so little because the writing was so good. It didn't need cgi monsters or quick moving vampires to scare or thrill the audience. Most of us are now unimaginative, ADD-riddled blobs of protoplasm who don't want to think unless it is dreaming of our favorite actress dressed up as some super heroine giving us head as we drink a latte' while watching Buffy reruns on SyFy. The Obsolete Man is my favorite of the old Zone episodes with the great Burgess Meredith as the condemned librarian and Fritz Weaver as the agent of The State labeling Meredith as obsolete. Great dialogue in that one and the simple sets gave it a nightmarish quality.
-
I must admit, my first reaction was that it was in some way a 'shopped fake photo. But looking at the other angle pic, I'm thinking it's legit, just 'enhanced' in the days before digital tech. It looks to me like that's actually a little fold in the skin of the neck, not the back of someone else's head. If nothing else, an interesting study for photo-geeks and the series was a legend.
-
So false lol!
-
That wasn't storytelling, that was a series of hackneyed confrontations featuring mainly C-grade actors (with the exception of Terry O'Quinn, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and the dude who played Desmond).
-
Twenty-five or six to four...
-
no other way to describe him. nearly 60 years on and his TWILIGHT ZONE show still delivers the smarts and wonders. The mroe time passe,s the more sophisticated the show looks. might might just mean that generally speaking, TV shows that are not from HBO or called HOUSE or DEXTER made today are incredibly dumb and stupid and lame (proof: LOST).
-
scott pilgrim came and went and nobody cares.
-
Whatever you think of the vampires, the writing on Buffy is not for unimaginative, ADD-riddled blobs. You'd have to be an unimaginative, ADD-riddled blob to think so.
-
I should have used a more suitable example for my point. How about one of the made for SyFy piece of shit movies they use to fill up their schedule?? I wasnt a huge fan of Buffy, but the millions of people cant be wrong.
-
This just in, Leonard Nimoy is shooting another sequel to Three Men and a Baby.<p> The next chapter, Three Men and a Prostitute, stars Tom Selleck, George Clooney, Ted Danson, and Miley Cyrus as the title hooker. His Majesty Bale plays a drug dealer-pimp and Mickey Rourke plays his croney.
-
damn weird looking pic,if this is real you need to find the original untouch so we can compare
-
I'd say millions of people can, in fact, be wrong, but even as a Whedon-disliker, I have to acknowledge and defend the awesome writing Buffy had, at least in early seasons.
-
This is a common thing in older print media. The contrast may have not been the best so retouchers would try to bring it up for the printers. I have an ancient encyclopedia that has a lot of the photos touched up just like that.<p>Rod was The Man.
-
Great minds...heh!
-
That's funny, Snowcone. Poor Steve Guttenberg. Gets edged out for Clooney in the "Three Men and a" sequel. Hopefully he can still get that cameo in the "Police Academy" reboot/re-imagining.
-
Quit ranting on about Photoshop, you're just embarassing yourselves. Pre-digital, basically an artist would use a range of grey paints to "beef up" black & white photos for print, it was standard practice in the newspaper industry into the 80s. Old-fashioned (that is less refined than today) printing techniques meant the retouching was (usually) unnoticeable to the untrained eye. All of which makes this photo all the cooler, imo.
-
this retouch is absolutely noticible
-
which is too bad.
-
Others brough Jar Jar Abrams way before i did, idiot. Go bug them and leave me alone, you creep!

The dickheads on YouTube think that "Chicago" was just some lame 70ies "Leisure" loung lizard act. The rocked HARD Iin 69 & 70. Check out " California Purples" "Free Form Guitar" "Moterboat to Mars" and "Sing a Mean Tune Kid" among dozens of others. Yes Chicago "Went soft" but not until about 1975...
