Perhaps The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day is our dream… and we’re his.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic! For my friends over at Ain’t It Bale News (including you, DGDB), I figured I’d dedicate this Sunday’s Behind the Scenes image to a very young Christian Bale. It’s real fookin’ professional and comes from what always seems to me to be the forgotten Steven Spielberg masterpiece, EMPIRE OF THE SUN. From the John Williams score to a great cast (including a fantastic performance from John Malkovich) and one of the best child performances from young Mr. Bale, this flick is really strong and strangely overlooked. Hop you guys enjoy the pic!

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here. Tomorrow’s pic is ready for its close-up. -Quint Follow Me On Twitter

Apparently Ben Stiller was very unprofessional on set. He messed up a line one take and said "Sorry - cut. I messed that one up" and everyone was all like "Dude, Spielberg is the director and he's the guy who says cut". Meanwhile the young Bale looked on disapprovingly.

    by jrb

is when Bale touches the Japanese plane with awe. A guard spots him and raises his rifle to shoot him. Three Japanese pilots are walking by and Bale turns and salutes them. The guard watches as the pilots come to attention and return the salute. He lowers his rifle and lets Bale live. Fucking brilliant.

    Aint It Bale News

    by HansBubi

...has oddly become one of the most intriguing and revealing chapters in Aint It Cool News' recent history. You know how talkbackers often complain about the AICN staff writers not keeping up to date on important news and reviews? One of the trolliest of AICN trolls (along with his partners in crime) actually did something about it, and made their own entertainment-based website featuring news and reviews among other things. It's actually quite impressive - not that i read their website - that a talkbacker actually took action after becoming frustrated with this website. They've certainly put some effort into their website. It's not a "I made it in one day" gimmick website.

  • Nov. 21, 2010, 6:46 p.m. CST

    by HansBubi

The website is Aint It Bale News. Google search that to find it. I also want to mention the irony of Quint posting a behind the scenes pi for a Spielberg film when talkbackers have been demanding all weekend that one of the staff writers post an article about Spielberg casting Daniel Day-Lewis in his Lincoln film. Instead, we get this nostalgic picture. Building on that irony, this article contains a reference to trolls that became frustrated with the AICN writers not always posting news and reviews (either on time or at all). This article has created one big, complex web of irony.

Always is an awesome movie. Dreyfuss, Goodman, Holly Hunter, and Audrey Hepburn's final film appearance. Also, airplanes, ghosts, firefighters, and it was filmed on location in one of our country's most beautiful states..Montana. Yeah, it's a remake(kinda), but I love that movie. On that note, maybe a movie night with Empire Of The Sun & Always is in order.

They wanted to show their near-religious devotion to Bale's "professionalism" while making a website that is apparently "more professional" than the original Aint It Cool News. It's a high concept website. I can't say I've really read anything on it though.

Empire of the Sun is a surreal film. The whole thing is like walking through a hazy dream. When I saw it as a kid, it depressed the hell out of me. Watching it, especially as a kid, almost makes you feel as detached and orphaned as Bale's character. No joke. It's a great movie.

I like Empire Of The Sun, but it's gone from under to overrrated

    by Nasty In The Pasty

I remember critics kind of pissing on the movie back in the day, but now it seems like everybody likes it...and both extremes are a little off-balance. It's a beautifully-shot movie (back in Spielberg's burnished, pre-Kaminski period), wonderfully-scored by John Williams, and the performances can't be faulted, but it also trivializes the horrors of the Japanese death camps in a way that undermines some of it's dramatic effectiveness. Like The Color Purple, it's a superior piece of entertainment that lacks the "oomph" of his post-Schindler's List "serious" films. It's a strong B+ movie for me, but it's not one of the great Spielberg films.

nice still of young Bale; the prodigy

    by justmyluck

I saw "Empire of the Sun" in 70mm (twice) when it came out, and it left me with mixed feelings. The production value, period, crowd control and casting were excellent. The big problem was that it never connected emotionally - I did give it a try twice. I think this was due to many scenes being overplayed to the nth with dramatic/iconic "Amazing Stories"-era string pluckings from Spielberg. I think the faults can be summarized in one story thread, as Jim watches the dead Mrs. Victor become ILM'd in a sacred glow, and followed by a god-shot of the American nuke strike. ILM gives us ANOTHER shot of Jim looking up as the atmosphere glows from the blast (to drive home that Jim thinks he is watching a heavenly ascension). Then later, we get ANOTHER close-up of Jim proclaiming to the camera something like, "I thought the atom bomb was Mrs. Victor going to heaven". This is basically how the whole movie distributes its messages - like an opening shot of a military vessel plowing through floating coffins...and flower petals... underscored with choir!!! But, wait - we get it AGAIN, with a resurrection scene (!) where Jim goes on about the atom bomb as god's light while his empowered, sun-backlit hands glide down to bring a "Jap" back to life! John Williams rises up while the sun flares nearly blind our eyes as Jim pummels away!! So, I'd say I liked EOTS overall..but it squeaks by on Davieau's cinematography, the aforementioned cast and, of course, the Shanghai invasion set-piece, which was executed brilliantly.

    by Ray_Tango

From the totally overblown sound track, to the vain attempts at manipulating our emotions, through to the incredibly sanitised 'war' scenes, and ending with Ben Stiller's pre surgery face, this is just ugly, obvious, manipulative, over-played, over-acted 'Hollywood' (whatever that means) porn. Over-rated is not one of the overs I'd award it.

    Cool movie

    by Kaitain

Captures extremely well that feeling that an era is over, that the old world order is being swept away and nothing will ever be the same again. Love the first reel where Shanghai is occupied, the feeling of pandemonium, and of old privileges counting for nothing.

  • Nov. 23, 2010, 5:35 a.m. CST

I love this movie like my own blood

    by AsimovLives

It's still one of the very, very rare few that actually makes me cry by the end. After all this years, after more then 26 years sinc eit was first released and i first saw it, and it still makes me cry. The most moving ending i ever seen in a movie since ever. I love this movie. I love it, i love it, i love it. To say EMPIRE OF THE SUN is terribly underrated is the height of understatments.

  • Nov. 23, 2010, 5:42 a.m. CST

    by AsimovLives

There already exists a sequel to EMPIRE OF THE SUN. In book form, at least. EMPIR EOF THE SUN was based on the book of the same title writen by SF author J.G. Ballard. He later wrote a sequel called THE KINDNESS OF WOMEN. Both books are semi-authobiographical. I'd like to see somebody, ever Spielberg, make a movie out of THE KINDNESS OF WOMEN, and with Bale reprising the role, now that he's an adult too, as the character is in the second book.

  • Nov. 23, 2010, 5:43 a.m. CST

EMPIRE OF THE SUN book has a sequel...

    by BringingSexyBack

    Tuesday, November 23rd 2010, 4:00 AM
The day has finally arrived: Miley Cyrus is 18.
The former Disney star, who has ditched her squeaky-clean image for an overtly-sexualized persona, celebrated her milestone birthday Sunday night with a star-studded party at Los Angeles hotspot Trousdale.
Though the "Can't Be Tamed" singer's actual birthday wasn't until Tuesday, that didn't stop her from letting loose and having a good time.
Coming off of her performance at the American Music Awards earlier Sunday night, Cyrus changed out of her white Marchesa mullet dress and into a sexy black leather cropped halter top with matching pants for the fete.
Dad Billy Ray Cyrus was unable to attend the party (he was working in Nashville), but mom Tish was by the singer's side to help celebrate – and bust a move.
"Me and my mom actually have choreography for the night," Cyrus told "Access Hollywood." "Everyone loves when we dance in unison."
And the singer's early celebration won't be her only one.
"I have a birthday month," she told the show. "I do the whole month of November. Thanksgiving, cake, [it's] all about me on Thanksgiving!"
Among Miley's guests were Demi Moore with husband Ashton Kutcher and daughter Rumer Willis, Kelly Osbourne, "Dancing with the Stars" finalist Kyle Massey and "Glee" actors Mark Salling and Chord Overstreet.
"She had such a good time [at her party]," a guest told "She was so happy and having so much fun just dancing nonstop, surrounded by all of her friends. It was the party she was hoping for."
Perhaps another reason for her fun night?
Cyrus was spotted sitting on the face of writer and faithful Bale disciple Abominable Snowcone.
Photographs show the birthday girl slathering her fresh juices all over Abom's face and leaning down to unzip his pants for a deflowering of her virginal throat.
Though the pair has long been anxiously waiting for this moment, a source told People they are just "getting to know each other – that's really it right now."
Seems like Abom got to know a whole lot more Cyrus that night.
Read more:
