Nothin’ can call The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day off…
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
Yeah, I love Pumpkinhead. The way Stan Winston shot it really caught me off guard a youngster. The atmosphere, the monster, the whole set-up of a creature from hell unleashed on some deserving kids that made a horrible mistake, Lance Henricksen’s tortured performance… all that adds up to a movie that felt a little more dangerous than others of the genre.
We’ll ignore the shitty sequels, we’ll ignore some of the aging of this movie and just rejoice in how fucked up it is and remember Stan Winston’s brilliance as a creature maker and storyteller.
Thanks to reader Blake Evernden for sending this image along! Enjoy!

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here.
Hey you! Get your damn hands off of tomorrow’s pic!

never saw the original, but one of the shitty sequels
-
That's the one I saw. Terrible, but perhaps the original is worth a look.
-
Was it really that great a movie?
-
Damn, I saw the pic and immediately thought it was about time I rewatched it for the first time since it opened.
-
If I ever get my hands on a time machine I'm erasing this film from existence to prevent it from inspiring Alien Resurrection's "Newborn".
Yeah sure, I could just go back and fix Alien 3 instead, but that wouldn't be a relevant post now would it?
-
That movie was a labor of love for Stan, and (I believe) his only directing effort. While it's got its flaws, the Pumpkinhead suit was a great piece of tech. I know I sound like a broken record, but god I love practical effects. Also, any pic involving Lance is welcome. The guy is a character actor god.
-
The raising of Pumpkinhead with the witch and all is awesome, reminds me of the sleepy hollow story.
-
looks like him
-
Don't go there. I don't care if it was an inspiration, but that insipid p.o.s. "newborn" came from the minds of Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff's ADI shop, which I feel to this day was the team you pulled in when you couldn't afford to pay Stan.
-
Shoot me....I liked bloodwings....it wasnt great but its not awful in my opinion. Didn't know there was a second sequel
-
So say we all.
-
Alec and Tom were in Stan's shop at the time. So they DID design Pumpkinhead. No wonder it looks like that shitty newborn.
-
then I really do recommend it. I don't feel that it's aged badly at all, specifically in terms of mood and effects. I think that Pumpkinhead himself is an awesome creature and the way he's shot (imagine a similar approach to shooting the alien in, erm, Alien) is testament to Winston's understand of the capabilities and limitations of the 'man in suit' monster.
-
..the early years
-
Holds up very nicely, in my opinion. Great movie.
-
Love Pumpkinhead!
-
Shit faced after a night on the town.

film Ghosts or something.but yeah Stan Winston = Legend.

its a pity he didnt live long enough to see Cameron's Avatar, since he is the one who gave Cameron the courage to finally direct his first movie and after decaded he also prompted him to make his own SW movie.

i have heard about this movie but i didnt know it was directed by Stan.i ll check it prondo.

Would it kill you to include that piece of information?
-
Seems like fun times. Wondering how Lance is doing... Oh! seems like plenty busy, lots of jobs lately. Cool.
-
Those pants are far too tight.
-
thats his stem.
-
Did you think it would be easy? Painless? Clean?
-
I think it was his fav horror movie. From out of the blue every now and then he would say in the old witch's voice:
"Ed Harrrr-leee!"
-
Not sure great acting by the city kids in the movie but decent enough. Lance and his son and the witch and the hillbillys were all great. And Pumpkinhead rocks. Glad he wasn't burried in a manure field or he'd be Shithead.
-
He already has, Ed Harley. He already has.
-
except for the college kids. It should be remade in a style like 'Winter's Bone': completely Ozark, with no city kids at all. Worked for many of the best early Twilight Zones, and the approach will work 50 years later.
-
Maybe it didn't fit the series, but it was scary as shit.
-
...I think I know what picture it is. And I think I know who sent it in. Thanks quint!
-
...horrifying creature cameltoe.
-
+500, very horrifying
-
More like Cameltoe if ya ask me.
-
the animation on the site...is that supposed to be Blue Velvet this time?
-
Even if the idea behind it was kind of stupid. I can't fault the creature designers for that. Visually, I think Alien 4 was really good, actually. The plot, not so much.
So tomorrow's picture is from Back to the Future, then?
-
I said it.
-
You're right, Killik, Pumpkinhead wasn't Stan's only directorial effort. He did also directed Ghosts (with Michael J), Terminator 3: Battle Across Time (for the Universal Studios theme park) and a Gnome named Gnorm. Still, I'll remember him more for his FX contributions than his directorial efforts :)
-
I have a twelve inch Pumpkinhead model in my kitchen (posed cleverly by my wife's sister in the fruit bowl, holding an orange). You ever turn the color all the way down on this one and watch it in black and white? Amazing.
-
A lot of love for the original, not sene it for some years though - never bothered with any of the sequels. BUT for those saying it was Stan Winston's only feature film, you're forgetting A Gnome named Gnorm - or, as I know it, UpWorld. I may have possibly sene this film more than nayone on the planet - my sister used to watch it a lot. It's a sort Beverly Hills Cop with a dirty naked Ewok in it. It stars 80s legends Anthony Michael Hall and Jerry Orbach. It also stars Claudia Christian's pawpaws.
-
Small? Check. Blurry? Check. Screwy lighting? Check. Yeah, this is definitely a cellphone picture. :-P
-
Pumpkinhead is still to this day one of the best monster designs in horror movie history. It's a great little movie, I wish Winston would've directed more.
-
I Love this movie, what Quint said: the lighting, the tone/atmosphere etc. is fantastically designed and shot & was really impressionable from a semi-young age. That along with how Jackson would light alot of Braindead, along with awesome prospthetics-heavy creatures and design...Scott & Legend & Alien....Legend & this film have created a lifelong passion/desire for a little movie shot in a dark forest/woods, bathed in blue/green low light, with lots of Meg Mucklebones & other smaller Chutulu like creatures way down the food chain running around massacring a mini van load of passengers that crashes & falls into their plane alongside a highway. If that sounds really indulgant i don't care cause its more a testiment to how much i loved these films & pumpkinhead and they fed my imagination...honestly - at least from what i had experienced when younger - only Dario Argento made a stonger impression with lighting in horror than this film...maybe Alien as well...
Anyway this is a really cool picture!
-
At the beginning my friend grabbed the remote to crank the volume up and declared, "We need to get the full PUMPKINHEAD experience!"
-
Same difference.
-
Very much of it's time but the creature rocked, really creepy looking thing. One of the best looking monsters on film ever. Gave me a memorable nightmare once any way.
-
ha!you beat me to it. almost makes up for your misspelling of chief. almost.
-
I dug that movie, besides it starred Amy Dolenz.
-
I say that to myself every time I see an Ed Hardy shirt.
-
PUMPKINHEAD - ASHES TO ASHES is decent; directed by JAKE WEST (EVIL ALIENS)

Camel toe.
-
That's some funny shit
-
and when it came out on video, I got the 12 inch standup from the video store. Still on display on my bookshelf.
-
Had it stored on my PVR for a few months so watched it. I really loved the first 15-20 minutes with the boy and his dad. How it was shot I could have just watched the Harleys have a day at the shop. Would have been fun. The film still holds together after the boy is killed and Harley goes to the witch. But for me the film started to fall apart when Pumpkin head went on the rampage. It just lost all suspense and became another (lesser) film almost. It picked up in the last 10 mins or so and the slight twist on the reburying of Pumpkinhead. A film of two halfs. The later half being less satisfying.
-
I always knew Ed Harley and PH were tight!
-
Looked like a sad ball of mozzarella
-
I swear it's a vagina with a penis coming out of it...
...and it scares the bejeezus out of me.
-
never understood the love for this movie. creature was undoubtedly cool-looking but shit film.
-
some other ding-a-ling here at AICN has "Chief Brody"...spelled properly. Altho...in 7 years or trolling...I've never come across a single post by my Amity PD doppleganger.
-
just messing about m'man. no disrespect to amity's finest.
-
Nobody could ever get Pumpkinhead's hands right in the sequels. In the original they wrapped around people's heads and in the sequels the fingers barely move and they just kind of slap at things. Reminds me of the shitty hands in Jason Goes To Hell.
-
Anyone ever read the Rawhead Rex graphic novel? Great stuff.
