Clap for the Wolf Man in today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
The below picture, taken during the filming of Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, features one of the king make-up artists of all time, Mr. Jack Pierce as he works on one of my favorites of his creations: Lon Chaney Jr.’s The Wolf Man.
This picture has been a popular one, sent my way by more than a few readers, but it’s one that I’ve had since the inception of this column. In fact, it was in the very first group of pics I set aside when I made up my mind to do this as a regular thing.
Pierce was responsible for the majority of the Universal Monsters and, as I said earlier, The Wolf Man is one of my favorites. I love how Chaney Jr. plays him, I love the look of the creature and I just love the feel of the original movie. If I’m to be totally honest, I never did see Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man, but this pic isn’t dependent on knowing that particular outing. It’s still the master working with one of his best creations.
Here’s the pic (click for a bigger version):

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here.
Tomorrow’s pic features another not so average Joe and his dog. See ya’ then!

Werewolves fucking rule!

Average Joe's Gym. Vince Vaughn and his pooch?
-
Yeah, it's a publicity shot... but still a legend working on one of his most iconic creations, no? Not all these pics are going to be candids, although I do have a few really good ones of Pierce working on Karloff for Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. In the near future those will pop up.

Are you sure this isn't a BTS pic from the ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW?
by rumikotrax45
Look's like Floyd the barber working on one of the hill folk. No kidding, this pic is not particularly rare but it is very iconic.
-
Meet Frankenstein was always my favourite of their movies because it has both Bela Lugosi AND Lon Chaney Jr. reprising their roles. Very very FUN movie with great characters all around.
-
Yes, in the 70's there was a song that praised Wolfman Jack called Clap For The Wolfman, by The Guess Who, which featured Wolfman Jack. Nobody brings it up anymore. Except here...
-
Clap for the Wolfman
He gonna rate your record high
Clap for the Wolfman
You gonna dig him til the day you die
Do Ron Ron and the Duke of Earl
They were friend's of mine
The highway's on my moonlight drive
Snuggled in, said "baby, just one kiss"
She said "no, no, no"
Romance ain't keepin' me alive
I said "hey babe, do you want to coo, coo, coo"
She said "uh, uh, uh"
So I was left out in the cold
I said "you're what I've been dreamin' of"
She said "I don't want to know"
(Wolfman Jack: "Oh you know, she was diggin' the cat on the radio")
Clap for the Wolfman
He gonna rate your record high
(WJ: "Yes baby, I your doctor in love")
Clap for the Wolfman
You gonna dig him til the day you die
(WJ: "Everybody talkin' about the Wolfman's confidence of love")
Seventy five, eighty miles an hour
She hollers "slow, slow, slow"
"Baby I can stop right on a dime"
I said "hey baby, give me just one kiss"
She said "no, no, no"
But how was I to bide my time
I said "Hey baby, do you want to coo, coo, coo"
She said "uh, uh, uh"
Said I'm about to overload
I said "you're what I've been livin' for"
She said "I don't want to know"
(WJ: "Oh, you thought she was digging you but she was digging me")
Clap for the Wolfman
He gonna rate your record high
(WJ: "As long as you got the curves baby, I got the angles")
Clap for the Wolfman
You gonna dig him til the day you die
(WJ: "It's all accoridng to how your boogaloo situation stands, you
understand")
Clap for the Wolfman
He gonna rate your record high
(WJ: "You ain't gonna get 'em, cuz I got 'em")
Clap for the Wolfman
You gonna dig him til the day you die
(WJ: "You might wanna try, but I'm gonna keep 'em")
Clap for the Wolfman
Clap for the Wolfman
(WJ: "And I got 'em all")
Clap for the Wolfman

I wish Jack Pierce would have been my dad at Halloween time
by tigger_tales
He looks like the kind of guy who would let me smoke Camels with him.
-
He fell for it, totally.
-
I feel a little surprised nobody referenced Werewolves of London yet.
-
And for werewolves?
-
I was always a sucker for the Universal monster mash-up films. The Houses of Frankenstein and Dracula are also favorites, as well as the aforementioned Abbott and Costello classic.
-
He was also drinking a pina colada a Trader Vic's.
-
Any more than that, and I'll bite your dick off. Then you'll be a dickless lycanthrope barber
-
Nice pic!
-
how long might it have taken to put that make-up on?

This should be a quote:

With a bit of luck... -
For all of these pics to be added to as they come out? That way I don't have to browse back weeks to see one that came out then?
You should still post them on the news as you make them like you are currently doing, but there should also be a link to view all of the past ones without us having to go back and click them one at a time.
Not everyone goes online daily or gets to this site regularly. -
Bollocks.
That is all. -
I see the links underneath the article. I thought that was all mumbo jumbo as I scrolled past. Those links will do.
-
Quint, how do you know the Guess Who? Weren't you born in the 80s?
-
I've always thought that the classic 1941 Wolfman always looks like a puppy embarrassed that he just pooped on the living-room rug.
"Did I do that?" -
Lighting on Wolfman, that is.
-
It's been fun seeing what BTS picture pops up next
-
Wolfman is much better than the recent remake. I'm still trying to figure out why they felt the need to rip off the ending to Wolf (1994). The only things I can really give it points for was it being a period piece and going R-rated. Sure Lon Chaney Jr. was hammy in the original, but at least you felt some sympathy for his plight. Benicio in the remake was like a drugged up zombie.
-
Was a total rip of Wojciech Kilar's Bram Stoker's Dracula.
-
Awesome pic, don't get me wrong, but in my head this is just a barbershop visit between disembowelings.
-
Maybe save them for October.
-
Such an iconic look.
-
Have Beaks or Mass photo Quint going through his collection to find the pic of the day.
Hey Quint--any idea when "The Shark is Still Working" is gonna hit DVD? Damn film's been DONE for like three years. Do they have a distributor yet? -

more Lon Chaney, please

Yeah, I'm an '80s kid, but I'd say a good 85% of my iTunes is 1980 and earlier. I grew up listening to the oldies station and as a teen really go into classic rock.Abominable - I understand there might be an announcement very soon on The Shark Is Still Working. It's been caught up in rights issues... the Jaws footage (and John Williams' music) is super expensive and you can't really have a making of documentary without that stuff. But I'm told there might be a resolution in the very near future. I'll absolutely let you guys know when anything concrete happens.

- actually the remake is a far more superior film...

....that's what I'd be saying if I was fucking insane.

Chain Quint to the ground and force him to watch Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman. Jesus, Boy!
-
Nice pic, Quint.
-
For the first half , when it was a Bram Stokers Dracula Rip.But it looked like Johnstone or the producers lost their bottle halfway thru , and it went all mainstream , cgi and commercial.By the unneeded "wolf" copy ending it had gone all "Van Helsing".
-
My thoughts exactly. :-)
-
pencil thin.

This site is getting kinky

This is the trailer to a new old school "Universal" film made with Lon Chaney's great, great grandson and designed by Tony "Army of Darkness" Tremblay.

Those old Power Record monster series from the 70's was covered here: http://assmints.com/blog/?p=1408&page=4 and one of them was The Curse of the Werewolf. Those comics were some of the best, and with creepy music too! Turns out you can download those for free.
-
is out of print. All about Universal Monsters in Florida (last seen in Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein) who resurface in '90s.

...I always loved the mash-ups more than the originals. And I thought the height of cleverness was Count Alucard, so more power to Jr. Yeah, I wasn't a terribly bright kid. Count Yorga inspired me to write an entire novel on lined notebook paper, in pencil. You know what happens to the graphite writing on a few hundred sheets of notebook paper once they've been stuck in a closet for a few years?
-
at the TCA today, MTV was promoting their "Teen Wolf" series & Daniel from HitFix said that it would be better promoted as "I Was A Teenage Werewolf"...
And I would be completely all over that fucking series if they had a Micheal Landon/Wolfman dude that combed his gnarley hair into a duckass & wore a letterman jacket when he ate people. -
Half my childhood are now just faint smudges.
-
Lon Chaney Jr walking with the queen?
-
Quint - I love the Universal monsters and the Wolf Man is my favorite... Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man has one of the greatest scenes of any Universal monster pic - Larry Talbot finding the Monster frozen in ice... Unfortunately, Karloff was no longer playing the Monster... It was Bela Lugosi. The Monster now had Igor's brain, so they thought the Monster talking like Bela would work... The suits thought he sounded ridiculous, so all of Bela's dialog (except for grunts or growls) was eliminated... If you watch the Monster, sometimes you can see him talking, but there is no sound...
-
Nice job posting those lyrics - but they don't convey the amazingly sexy giggle of the girl who chats with Wolfman Jack in the song... (sigh)
-
Universal mash-up films were just the best - John Carradine as Dracula!
-
Beppo-Yeah, that story makes viewing "F Meets W" interesting. I love the Universal series, but after "Van Helsing" & the new Wolfman I wish another studio would acquire the rights! Universal just keep crapping on their own legacy. Shameful.
-
Between Lugosi and Lee he's the 3rd best Romanian castle enthusiast.
-
How can that be possible? I can't imagine anyone who ever came to this site ever even saying that. Then, you don't know the story of the Frankenstein monster originaly talked through the whole film (Igor's brain, remember. Both played by Bela) and explained how he was blinded (which is why he staggers around stiffly) all the talking was removed after the first screenings, unfortunetly. The whole script can be found easily.

The hairy handed gent who ran amok in Kent?
I'd like to meet his tailor. -
...good to know I'm not alone my brother, and my sincerest sympathy.

... in a still with George Lucas and Richard Dreyfuss. In fact, a craoload of behind the scenes shots of the film that featured Harrison Ford, MacKenzie Phillips, Ron Howard, Charlie Martin Smith, Wolfman Jack, Bo Hopkins, Debralee Scott, Kay Lenz, Joe Spano, Suzanne Somers, Kathleen Quinlan, Paul LeMat Cindy Williams, and the aforementioned Wolfman Jack and Richard Dreyfuss. Don't tell me there isn't a shit load of footage laying around Modesto - unless that's why Lucas built his Empire nearby, to buy it all first!!!! It's a conspiracy I say or my name's not Oliver Stone!
-
"Monsters are such iiiiiinteresting people..."
-
Neat though it is.
-
I co-sign on Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein. One of my all-time favorite flicks with the great Universal Studios monsters and Abbott & Costello at their funniest. And Glenn Strange wasn't bad as Frankenstein's Monster. The only problem is that Abbott & Costello never actually meet Frankenstein in the movie!
