Leave the Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day. Take the cannoli.
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
This is the second Godfather image I’ve run and it was almost the first before someone sent in that badass picture of James Caan with all the bullet-holes in his face. If you want to see that one (or any other previous BtSPotD image for that matter) check out the bottom of ever BTS article. I have a list of every single image posted. Scan and click!
There are many different categories for these images… some are candid moments, some are insights into the technical side of filmmaking and some are like the below… a moment from an iconic scene caught in a still.
Here we have the great Marlon Brando with the real Godfather standing over him, Mr. Francis Ford Coppola. Enjoy!

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here.
Tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes Pic is not a poet, it’s an ophiologist.

Never seen this one.

It's what all the cool people do. He should just try to top himself. I give him credit for his small art movies like Tetro but man I miss old Coppola. I know he did Godfather for the money but damn..he has never come close, not even close with Apocolypse Now.
-
and then they would fear you! awesome pic.
-
Brando is so iconic and images from that part of the film so recognizable that Coppola looks like he's been shopped in. Or just visiting Madame tussauds.
-
Boring. Snooze. Watch dvds. Much better pictures and footage.
-
i'm not sure which one would make me more nervous. i mean look at coppola in that picture- tell me he doesn't look alittle serial killerish. "Either they will accept my offer, or Geico here will eat their brains."
-
....dirty hippy.
-
Coppola just wanted to do his thing. Everyone loved it and worshiped it. Like a pimp, he agreed to do another one. IF they would finance the movie he wanted to do. So can we get some behind the scenes action from THE CONVERSATION?
-
It just seemed very meandering to me. I remember at several moments in the movie when major characters died, I was like "Why's this randomly happening now? It could've been anytime." It all felt very arbitrary. That drives me crazy in movies, when you could rearrange the main events in any order and it wouldn't make any difference. The story loses momentum, and I get bored. So it was with THE GODFATHER.
-
You got bored because, as you say, the story lost momentum for you. I appreciate that peoples tastes differ and that not everyone is going to be drawn to the same thing. But I hardly think that the millions of Godfather fans agree with you. I being one of them. Critiqueing a movie with the calibre of The Godfather by questioning their editing and momentum sounds more arbitrary than your complaints.
-
Love this column.
-
haha!!good one! Don Vito frowns on hippies..
-
..looks more meneacing than the Don..
-
i find GF1 a bit boring too and a girlfriend of mine (she is a professional film editor)has never managed to keep watching the movie after the first 30m,simply because she finds it extremely boring. <p>imho GF1 is overrated,it is brilliantly made i dont argue that, but i think as a story it lacks while it gets more praise than it deserves mainly because of Brando's phenomenal performance. <p>on the other hand GF2,now that is a brilliant masterpiece.
-
he just sits there with that creepy, emotionless face until Corleone whispers to his ear whom he wants to sleep with the fishes. <p>then he leaves the room to kill the target he is ordered to. <p>or he is just the boy whom he sends out to get him his favorite pasta dish.

But I would never call The Godfather boring.

Godfather 1 and 2..an observation on likeing them or not...
by conspiracy
if a person is an art lover, or a book reader..they will love these films as the works of art they are. Deliberate, sometimes slow moving...but amazingly scripted and shot.</p><p>Now...if someone is not a reader but rather a TV watcher; or has never sat and pondered the brilliance of Monet..they find them boring. And it has nothing to do with generational issues either...I know a guy, 50...watches all kinds of film, but has never read a serious book and can't make it through 15 minutes of Godfather; have a friend who is 25, she is an Art major and a reader; she thinks the first two films are perfection. Maybe it has to do with attention span issues...or a desire to get to the "action" right away....but those are things I have observed about people and these films.
-
or whatever, you get branded as someone who is clueless about movies. The Godfather is on TV nearly every month. At this point, who HASN'T seen it?

Coppola is wearing his pedophile beard and glasses

All we need is a pic of Coppola with Lucas and Spielberg, and the trifecta of pedo look wearing motherfuckers will be complete.

http://tinyurl.com/324qbsk <p> Oh wait, one of those pedos is wrong.
-
The Godfather and Part II are pretty much one movie that were done in two parts but I have to admit that I'm more partial to Part II even though it wouldn't work without Part I. GD is a great movie but Part II is perfection. The decent of a good man (Michael) into evil is done so well, so slowly and played with such subtlety by Pacino (a subtlety that he has lacked since Scarface) that it is so amazing to watch! The second storyline about his father Vito running parallel with Michael's is brilliant! The final scene with Michael and his family around the dinner table is so wonderful and builds to such a sad moment with Michael sitting by himself...just simply the best sequel to a movie ever made.
-
all filmmakers that wear glasses and have beards are peodos? Isn't that pretty much all of them?
-
If you say so. Although, while I know the first two Godfather films are pitch perfect and works of art, they never seem to connect with me. Guess what, I'm an art lover and don't watch tv. How do you explain that? The Coppola films that do connect with me in a big way are Apocalypse Now and The Conversation.

He lived on the edge, mortgaging everything to make his films. "Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse" shows the extent to which The Godfather films and Apocalypse Now drove him to the edge and then finally over it. Coppola was at his best when he had everything to lose.

Not a rare picture, its from Vanity Fair i believe.

I have an old copy of VF from like a year or two ago sitting in my bathroom... and it has this nice article on the actual mob involvement in the Godfather movie. <br> This picture is one of the many pictures in the article.
-
Marlon Brando has a freaking black outline around him, and his left shoulder has polygons to it as if someones used the polygon lasso tool lol. Come on, you gotta spot these...the lighting on Brando and Coppola isn't even the same..how can you not spot these????
-
Coppla is totally wearing a modern shirt. The hand is also fake on the chair.
-
a Pic of The Day column, get somebody who has an eye to spot blatant fakes like this. It just makes this site look stupid.
-
..makes a great drinks coaster or if you get bored with that, try using it as a frisbee.
-
and how is that a modern shirt? Copploa look his usual 1970's creepy self<P>Why did all the directors in the 70's look so pederast?
-
...and have no desire to either.<p> Much for the same reason I haven't seen 'Goodfellas', 'Casino', 'Scarface', or any other Holy Grail of mafia/gangster films. Simply because I have no interest in them whatsoever.<p> If anyone would like to wibble some bullshit about 'transcending genres' then please feel free, but mafia/gangster films bore me to fucking death.<p> Oh, and to head off any predictable, arrogant rants about 'lack of attention span', or 'watching brainless summer films', etc, I count 'Blade Runner' among one of my favourite films of all time.
-
I seem to recall that Robert Duvall turned it down over money or something. Apparently they planned for his character Tom Hagen to have some kind of falling out with Michael. If that is true, it would have made for a much more interesting story to tell IMHO. Instead it seems they had to elevate that romance sub-plot between Sofia's Mary character and Andy Garcia's Vincent to a much more prominent position in the storyline, one that it unfortunately could not sustain. Not to mention that Sofia's acting was utterly atrocious. You can blame that on Winona Ryder and her "getting sick" or maybe stage fright right as they were about to start filming.

by ohsostupidlongassfuckingscreennames
I've detected a pattern, (aside from every BTSPOTD drawing a batshit comment from the photoshop conspiracy nut cadre): Jehovahs = Tigger = Nasty = Redbull. <p> Look sharp friends and neighbors monstrous fraud being perpetrated right under your noses. <p> Tell me Redbull, how do pederasts look? And where does the stereotype come from? We wonders, aye, we wonders... <p> Where the fuck did they stash the banhammer? Anything goes on this wretched site nowadays. It's getting to where it's not worth wading through the shit to find the occasional pearl anymore. The pearls are fewer and farther between, and the shit just keeps getting more and more foul. I mean there's 'shit' and then there's "oh my god I'm gonna barf! SHIT". It's shame really...

You guys know the Beard wanted Indy to be a pedophile.....
by Jehovahs_Witness
....right? Here's the transcript from an early story meeting between the beards: <p> GL: I was thinking that this old guy could have been his mentor. He could have known this little girl when she was just a kid. Had an affair with her when she was eleven. <p> LK: And he was forty-two. <p> GL: He hasn’t seen her in twelve years. Now she’s twenty-two. It’s a real strange relationship. <p> SS: She had better be older than twenty-two. <p> GL: He’s thirty-five, and he knew her ten years ago when he was twenty-five and she was only twelve. It would be amusing to make her slightly young at the time. <p> SS: And promiscuous. She came onto him. <p> GL: Fifteen is right on the edge. I know it’s an outrageous idea, but it is interesting. Once she’s sixteen or seventeen it’s not interesting anymore. But if she was fifteen and he was twenty-five and they actually had an affair the last time they met. And she was madly in love with him and he … <p> The rest of the story can be found at cinematical: http://tinyurl.com/352luhg

You're a better man than me, gunga din. Because I DO fault anyone who thinks THE GODFATHER is "boring". I think you really have to be stone cold idiot to not get one of the greatest stories ever put on film. It's fucking classic scene after classic scene - how could you possibly get bored?? I'm afraid that the kids coming up today have no idea what a good story is - just ADD editing and special effects overload. It's fuckin' sad. It really is. Actually, any time someone uses the word "boring" to describe ANY film, I think they're probably an idiot. If you're not engaged by the film, think and figure out specifically why, what your criticism is; and then ask yourself if you gave it a fair viewing, or if you're prone to be contrarian because it's a classic, was made before you were born, or you like to change channels after ten minutes. In fact, I'd bet most of these "boring" people haven't even sat down to watch the whole film properly, but have just seen bits and pieces. But to say something is boring says you're lazy, stupid, or both. Period.
-
Just tons and tons of idiots on AICN these days. Maybe anybody serious about film should not come here.
