The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day features a deal with the devil!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
Watching FW Murnau’s FAUST at Butt-Numb-A-Thon, complete with live organ music, was a real treat. The famous German expressionist flick deals with a man’s deal with the devil and there’s some amazing early effects work on display, including the moment that is shown below.
I love this image of Emil Jannings in complete Mephisto get-up standing over the small town, nearly engulfing it with his crazy-ass wings. It’s a rather disturbing image that reminds a whole lot of Disney’s Night on Bald Mountain segment of Fantasia later on.
Reader Brady Crane submitted this pic and it’s a doozy. Hope you enjoy!

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here.
Holy skin-tight outfit, Batman! Tomorrow’s pic is very nice!

just do a CGI tweak or two on those wings, and it's ready for 2010. Amazing how little has changed!
-
who won the SW book contest today? This BTS picture is one of my favorites so far. Very cool...
-
He has Mephisto wearing some skinny ass tight jeans with the wings positioned over his shapely thighs in the movie poster.
-
This...and the Alien (Space Jockey) Pic of the Day are the best so far...imo
-
That's crazy. I love it. Awesome.
-
Makes me want to shoot some model built effects scenes...
-
Cool pic though, I kind of want to check that movie out now.
-
Movie now Netflix queued.
-
Great job, Brady! Nice find. Murnau definitely had a way with things. Even his dragon for the Ring films looked pretty good; no small feat in that day and age.
-
The mind boggles...
-
about a throwaway comment. Dumbasses.
Btw, I did enjoy the pic, and it's a talkback, so I can say whatever I want. Don't like it? There's always the Christian Science Monitor website, lol.
-
At least I know Star Wars is fake, unlike religious minded people.
-
being Christian, since you still believe in the devil. So what are you trying to prove by throwing your agnostic label around? If you had any balls you'd be an Atheist, but since you go around attacking people randomly on the internet for throwaway comments, that's not a surprise.
-
A reminder that ART is fully possible in filmmaking. I will seek out this film.
-
As if that photo wasn't evidence enough.

I've only seen a handful of silents (which I'm assuming this is from) but would love to hear from you guys on what you recommend.<p. Seen Nosferatu, Metropolis and The Lost World so far. (And a number of Lloyd funnies)
-
That is a GREAT BTS, QUINT! FAUST is an incredible piece of cinema.
-
Not to get into the middle of anyone's pissing match, but...
Really - I don't see how anyone can be anything but agnostic. I mean, who really KNOWS? No one really knows whether or not there's a God, whether all the stuff in the holy books is anywhere near true or real. Or for that matter, how can you prove a negative?
Believing absolutely either for or against, and thinking we have it figured out, is the fairy tale.
All we know is the mystery, and it's a beautiful one.
-
too stupid to understand that I was called out for one comment, which singled out no one. I attacked no one, but all of the religious mentalists feel the need to go after someone that doesn't share their beliefs. Read before you type.
Btw, your s/n is trying too hard to compensate for what you and everyone else knows you are. You probably have a small dick and drive a Corvette too, Lol. Now you can all get over your pain that I insinuated that you all base your life around a fairy tale, and get back to talking about the pic.
-
That's an interesting perspective. But I will remain Atheist until I see something that shows me otherwise.
-
I think geektard inadvertantly stumbled upon a new handle.
-
Methamphetamines instead of Mephistopheles. I said this before, but I'm going to say it again, just to show everyone how clever I am. Nyah.
-
I have never seen Faust but will look for it!
-
As an pretty solid Agnostic Atheist, I have no issue with your statement other than it seems intended to start a flame war (which it has), my only real problem with your replies is that you equate Agnosticism with a religious belief system ( which it can be, but usually isn't). Your implication seems more aimed at Gnosticism and not Agnosticism. Two VERY different belief systems. Agnostic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnosticism Gnostic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnosticism

As an Atheist I think you are a douche and give all atheist a bad name. You are no better than a crazy Bible Thumper. There is absolutely no reason to inject your personal beliefs into this thread. Its absolutely dumb and egotistical.
-
You are ALL helping to ruin this talkback, keep it up. And like it was stated in the paragraphs, I was also reminded of the Bald Mountain sequence.
-
ever played, was when he put a flaming bag of poo on that old man's front porch. Remember that.
-
than a Dracula cape and one of those Christmas village figurine sets. But because I'm not European, I'm somehow not as cool. Whatever.
-
I thought this was going to turn in to another "Sarah Pallin" talkback!

Great pic, very impressive... but not cool trying to start a flame war!
-
Amazing pic. Probably one of the best yet.
-
Thanks BurnHollywood, for the Youtube link. This looks incredible - right up there with Fritz Lang's "Die Nibelungen." I love the visual power of the silent films when tackling great mythological subjects and classic literature.
-
back during undergrad. Good movie. The scene they're making in the pic was the coolest one by far. Great visual.

Sith, I'm an atheist, but what was the point of that?
by MattmanReturns
Just trying to piss people off? I may not believe in the devil, but there is great evil in this world, and he's a perfect embodiment of all that evil.
-
How long before most of you talkbackers are working there? Thanks Lesbo Big Sis, for teaching children that inappropriate touching is the job of the government. Why not? We all take it in the ass from Uncle Sam eventually.
-
for free.....with some kind of music/soundtrack
-
and you HOPE there is no devil, because if there is you are probably fucked.
-
excellent picture - is the rest of the film as interesting?

On behalf of my fellow atheists and agnostics, I would like to apologize for SithMenace being a douche. Not all of us are intolerant trolls.
-
which is highly recommended to all fans of this film. It has a whole gallery of BTS pics & stills.
-
To me, being an atheist is pretty close to being Christian in that you're placing belief in something absolute.
-
or smurfs. But there is no question my cat is God. If you saw my cat you would agree that god is huge and fluffy with solid grey fur and brando's chin.

not specifically aimed at anyone, caused so many people to mouth off like they did. It looks like I especially got to Geektard_Smasher, without even trying to. Wow, a lot of hurt feelings on this site over one comment.
Sorry Quint, I enjoy your column and had no idea that one comment would cause everyone to hijack your TB. That's why I stopped responding to them.
-
Look, as far as I can see there are 2 possibilities here:

(1) You genuinely didn't realise that it was a dumb thing to say...

or

(2) You were flat out on the wind-up and didn't expect to receive almost universal condemnation, Only now you're having to back pedal!

I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt... but I'm more inclined to believe option 2.
-
Somehow, I'll be able to go on living even if 15 or so people on an internet message board disagree with what I say, Lol.
-
Way to latch on to what someone else said, complete with Wikipedia links, Lol. However, there are different types of agnosticism, as your buddy's article pointed out. If you're agnostic theist, which I doubt you would admit now anyway even if you were, then I wasn't wrong at all. Even if you're not, I still wasn't wrong.
But please do try to think for yourself next time, instead of latching on to someone else that's fighting your battles for you, lol.
-
I'm not interested in helping you idiots hijack Quint's TB anymore. To the few of you that were mature enough to respond in a civil way, thank you.
-
cool fucking pic by the way...
-
You know sometimes, if you've made a bubo, by putting up your hands and saying "you know what, I fucked up, I'll know better next time. I'm sorry." you'll actually get a bit of respect.

Takes a big man to admit when he screwed up... but making out that it's everyone else's fault for "Not having a sense of humour"... well, thats not going to get you much respect, is it?
-
this is one of them.
-
Agnostics are just pussies who can't bring themselves to take the last, logical step on the road to sanity.
Yeah, like, I guess I can't *prove* prove there's no god. But I also can't prove there's no purple flying turtle behind me that disappears when I look over my shoulder. But I'm pretty fucking sure there's no flying turtle, anyway.
-
It's the story that I took my handle from. Huzzah. Sweet BTS pic!
-
Awesome pic by the way Quint. I watched this movie a few years back and was so very amazed with the effects and production values. I remember seeing an original ink cell of the Chernabog at Disneyland back in 1989 and there was either a caption under it or a tour guide exclaiming that it was inspired by this movie. To far back to remember exactly, but the fragment of this personal memory includes this nugget of knowledge provided somehow when I looked at that cell.
Agnostics don't believe in the Devil. They believe in the inherent Complexities of Desire and Necessity and the Irrational and Destructive acts some people do to fulfill them.

Way to go!

...BUT I BELIEVE IN YOU!!!!!
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
get it?
i'm implying that i'm the devil.
scary, eh?

Now I wish there was a band called "Atheist Coke Party".
