The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day has come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And it’s all out of bubblegum.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic! I’m a little gunshy posting this image, afraid that I’ve entered some sort of Twilight Zone where this little column is granted the power of life and death over those featured. I mean, what are the odds that I’d post a 54 year old photo of Kevin McCarthy the night before he died? So, John Carpenter, wherever you are, please be extremely careful over the next 24-48 hours, okay? I was asked recently to list my top 10 favorite directors and John Carpenter made the cut. Nobody had a run like Carpenter. From Assault on Precinct 13 to In The Mouth of Madness he didn’t deliver one stinker. That’s my opinion, of course, but I even liked his Invisible Man movie with Chevy Chase. And many of his films in-between those two I count as personal favorites. Halloween, The Thing, Big Trouble In Little China and Prince of Darkness particularly stand out. So does today’s pic, from the set of THEY LIVE. By all accounts this movie shouldn’t work. It’s a sci-fi satire starring a wrestler for cryin’ out loud. But I love it. Sure, it has its faults… it’s oddly paced, Rowdy Roddy Piper isn’t an actor and it shows, but you know what? Piper has enough charisma and enough screen presence to make it work. Keith David rocks in the flick and his extended alley fight with Roddy Piper is one of the best fights in the history of cinema. And then you have one of the creepiest alien designs ever, featured below. Thanks to Sean Pepler for the image! Here’s the pic (click for the bigger version)! Enjoy!

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here. A Wampa attacks in tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes Pic!!! -Quint Follow Me On Twitter

    What a movie!

    by The_Closet_Nerd

Truly one of the most under rated movies of all time, and it still holds up today. I just watched it a few months ago with my 10 year old son, and he loved it. That's one that I hope never gets remade, because they could never get it right.

Thanks for recognizing They Live. This column has made me realize how many young-ish readers this site has (born in the 90s!), and they haven't seen a lot of movies from the 80s and earlier decades. Here's one for those readers! Put on the glasses and enjoy this cinematic treat.

So when did he start delivering stinkers??

    by darthwaz1

Most people consider Escape from LA his only "stinker". I say it's watchable though. I'm not the biggest fan of his invisible man, or starman for that matter, and dark star is kinda senseless. Far from stinker's though. Everything else he's done has either been very good, or a flat out classic. I wish he still put movies out! what happened?? Romero is still putting films out and he's way older than Carpenter.

One of my favorite John Carpenter films

    by Arcangel2020

Terrific behind the scene pic from "They Live". I really enjoyed this movie when it first came out...not a lot of people I knew back then did. I recently watch it again on Comcast On demand free section and still got a kick out of it and the message of the film as well. I did and still do think the first half of the movie is a little on the slow side of things..acting and action-wise...but still a good movie to watch :) I think John Carpenter has made some awesome classics in his film career..Halloween, Escape from New York, The Thing, The Fog...but he has also made some collossal disappointments too..Escape from LA, Christine, In the Mouth of Madness, Ghosts of Mars... But for all his maddening disappointing inconsistencies fil-wise? I still think he is a good director.

It's not like the news came barrelassing out moments after he died. It took a while to leak out, it's all just a big kawinkydink. THEY LIVE is alright....

    by Monroville

Once I figured out it was the liberal version of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (the left's fear of republicans/reagenomics), I grew a little more appreciation for it.. but it is still goofy as fuck and has a pace as lively as the corpsish aliens. And again, while funny, when I first saw the 10 minute fight between Rowdy Roddy and Keith David (or is that David Keith? Why didn't they ever make a movie together?) I just could not take the movie seriously at all - just gave up on it completely... which is pretty much how I feel about all of JC's movies from PRINCE OF DARKNESS on (good ideas, lifeless executions).

    Funny memory

    by redshirt

I was in Circuit City one night a few years back, and this movie was the feed for all the big screen TV sets. I was with my son who was maybe 11 at the time. Fortunately he was off in another section because the topless sex scene came on. There were bare boobs a bouncing on every set in the place, probably for 10 seconds. I almost crapped my pants I was laughing so hard. I told the salesman what was going on and he about passed out from fear. Good times!

I had absolutely no idea that was him. craziness. I also liked that movie, that was the first time I noticed Sam Neil and his amazingness. I guess I saw that before Hunt for Red October.
oh and an interested factoid for you film geeks out there, that movie was the first major Hollywood film with a complete orchestral score written by a woman, Shirley Walker.

    by TheJudger

on late night tv every few weekends. The Warriors gre new legs and made lots of new fans, and they live has become one of the most watched Carpenter films. I think I've seen TL more times than any other John Carpenter film, and I own pretty much all of them and have seen every damn one except for pro life and his oscar short winner "The Resurrection of Bronco Billy"
Speaking of which if Aint It Cool wanted to make some big news. Then they should figure out a way a leaked copy of The Resurrection of Bronco Billy posted here somehow. Drew has worked with John. Is there a way? I've seen all of Johns stuff except this. I even have a worn out VHS copy of someones watching me granted I havent seen these flicks Sorceror from Outer Space (1969) Warrior and the Demon (1969) (as Johnny Carpenter) Gorgon, the Space Monster (1969) Gorgo Versus Godzilla (1969) Terror from Space (1963) Revenge of the Colossal Beasts (1962) but those were mostly experimental learning films, but Bronco is a real deal short flick and it won the fucking oscar- I want to see that shit.

I love the fuck out of this movie. I remember when it opened, saw it at the Olympia on 107th. I thought really? a wrestler? really? super sunglasses? But the movie is juuuuust hip enough to its own silliness and, after all, it's really a horror film or even an invading aliens film -- it's a weak pretext for showing corporate cultural takeover.

    Carpenter is the King

    by InActionMan

I was on You Tube recently looking at the scene from "The Thing" where the head pulls off the body and grows spider legs. Most of the comments on the clip were young'uns who had never seen the movie just saying "Holy shit I am so freaked out right now" over and over. JCTT is probably the scariest movie ever made and the best depiction of on screen paranoia of all time.

You are correct, Campbell is waaaaaaaaaay overrated. The first two Evil Dead films are great, the third not so bad, and he did some ancillary stuff that was halfway enjoyable, but he went down the Shatner self parody road far too soon. It all started with the boring Bubba Ho-Tep and it was a downward spiral from there. Those Old Spice commercials were embarrassing. On topic: Great BTS pic today, LOVE They Live.

They Live has a special place in my heart. It's awesome on so many levels I actually don't own it so I thank this web site for bringing it to my attention. Oh and 11zombies I don't give a shit about your review for Spider-man 2 that movie came out in 2004 your riveting review is a bit late. Also bashing on Bruce Campbell... Really? Pretty fucking pathetic. Zombies do us all a huge favor and stop giving us your point of view on these things because you're an idiot. You thought BC's down fall involved his very brief cameo's in Spider-man? That is the dumbest shit I've ever heard. You're acting like he was Tom Hanks, he was the star in nerd cult films dip shit. How does having cameo's that last a minute be a down fall? Seriously ass holes who hate on Spider-man 2 get their nerd cards revoked. What does that mean? It means if I see you at comic con you better run because I'll be wearing my sun glasses saying: "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum." And then you're fucked. Final note: Ghost of Mars is hilarious. Seriously watch it again and try not to laugh... You can't it's amazing.

Mr. Nice Gaius, this one's for you

    by The Bicycle Sharer

Swear to God, and this is weird, but I just woke up from a dream in which I was trapped in a spectator area above a jungle cage (kinda like the one that the raptor was in Jurassic Park). Somehow, these murderous apes (a cross between Kong himself and the bad apes from "Congo") were being let into the cage. Suddenly, out of the blue, this full-on, dressed in a suit, blond ape with glasses comes up to me and wants to share the Styrofoam cup of coffee in my hand. I give it to him. He takes a sip and says we'll split it, asking where he should mark the halfway point for the split. Not wanting any ape saliva in MY mouth, I tell him, No, thanks, it's all yours. I'm worried, however, that this ape, seemingly all civilized will figure out why I don't want any more coffee, that I don't want to drink after him. Before I wake up, I realize this blond ape in a suit's name is Mr. Nice Gaius and the phrase "No more Mr. Nice Gauis if he finds out" keeps running through my bran.
Damn, no more of King's Dark Tower before bed.

I was hooked on Fangoria like it was crack back then. Carpenter was pimped like Jesus (Romero was God) in that magazine. I think I remember reading the the black and white effects were more of an after thought then actually being planned. Anyway, the only weakness this film has as far as I'm concerned is Meg Foster. I've never seen her act for shit in a movie before and she was horrible in this one.

Nice to see a fellow Chandler fan.
And to the two other people, yes, I too like Memoirs of an Invisible Man.

They Live---the reason to have a region-free DVD player

    by thelordofhell

The British DVD has commentary by Piper and Carpenter. They never bothered to port it over to the American DVD (in any of the releases).

MARRY. REPRODUCE A few days ago, I asked a buddy of mine what movie the corner animation was from on AICN. He told me, 'They Live.' So, I decided to watch it. Quite an odd movie, no? Begging to be remade..

Got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, eh? If not liking Spider-Man 2 makes me not on your cool list then I'm happy to be there. Bad choices in casting, costume designs and storylines crushed those films. And for me, they certainly were a part of Campbell's slide, "My Name is Bruce" being the final nail in the coffin. But enough of that. Weren't we talking about They Live? Begging to be remade DDillustration? Heaven forbid!

called Body Bags? I recall the three stories to be quite entertaining (the one with Stacy Keach and his monster hair stand out).

    This movie is still timely!

    by Klytus_I.m_Bored

If not more timely than ever. Especially with the Tea Party "movement" showing conservatives in brainless lock-step with the know-nothings on Fox News, AM radio, etc. So awesome.

Great movie! But Goddamn would I love to hear the Carpenter/Piper commentary. No way could it live up to Carpenter & Russell on the Big Trouble in Little China DVD, but still...

Had not seen it till recently.

    by catlettuce4

I saw this one just a few months back after hearing for years how great it was. I liked it, and thought it was quite cool, though it was nowhere near as enjoyable for me as some of Carpenter's other movies from that time. The slow buildup and mystery of the first part was great, but then the last part seemed to be rushed awfully fast to get to the ending. This premise could easily have been multiple movies or an ongoing TV series or something.

I watched this way back and didn't expect it and just had to lol at how absurd it gets. And of course the South Park parody is another classic.
