There can be no understanding between the hand and the brain unless the Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day acts as the mediator!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic!
Keeping a daily column fresh is a big challenge. You have noticed some “that’s an alright one” in the mix so far and you will see a few in the future. Sometimes it’s a necessity if I want to feature a particular actor, movie or director and only have a mediocre shot to do it with.
But today’s shot was something that really got my geek up. This isn’t a filler shot and, amazingly, the other behind the scenes pics I have for this movie are just as good, if not better. But to me this picture encompasses everything I wanted to do with this column.
From Fritz Lang’s Metropolis we have an awesome picture that gives us a look at the detail of the Maria robot piece as well as a thought at to what was underneath. It’s a very candid moment, a frozen piece of history as the actress inside took a breather and one of the costume guys was doing a little touch-up on the robot… in short, this is the kind of shit you see when you spend any time on a film set. Real people doing their jobs, all focused on making magic happen at 24 frames a second.
Here it is (and click to make bigger):

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare, the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here.
Tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes Pic proves there are two kinds of people. Those with loaded guns and those who dig. See ya’ then!

Very cool. Humanizing

The Beginning...

yep\\2nd

Aside from just being a great candid shot, the physical quality of the picture itself is quite amazing. Was it touched up?
-
Not by me.

Hm, this is an old pic. So far, all the rest have been new...
by starwarsredux
...to my eyes, anyway.
Also, it should be: "THE MEDIATOR BETWEEN HEAD AND HANDS MUST BE THE BEHIND THE SCENES PIC OF THE DAY!" -
I didn't know hand-held hair dryers existed at the time this film was made. So, when I immediately saw it I thought it was a fake...

So...they're re-making Total Recall now...

Fuck you Hollywood. Just, fuck you.

Quint, I hope I didn't come off sounding accusatory...

I was just curious if whoever had original access to these photos had cleaned them up or something, as this photo is downright pristine. Of course, I suspect those in the film industry at the time probably had access to---well, the best cameras and film.
-
It's funny how everyone looks depression era and then there's this robot costume that looks futuristic and out of place.

That's some serious kinky fetish going on
by bp_drills_america_a_new_asshole
If I didn't know better, I'd think she was getting prepared for some kinky sex party. I'm sure the suit opens up in all the important places!
-
Magic was happening a 20 frames per second! :)
-
...way back in the 20's. Too bad Hollywood (as usual) tossed science fiction into the "Crap For Kids We Can Crank Out Cheap" category and the world was stuck with generations of stuntmen lumbering around in silver spray painted cardboard suits with light bulbs attached on top.
-
And turned it B&W with Photoshop. I CALL SHENANIGANS.
-
they know their shit... oh and one more thing: saw "inseption" 5 times in last 7 days.... i'm in limboooo!!
-
...Kurt Wimmer is writing it, so we'll end up with idiotic "gun kata" action and endless scenes of Douglas Quaid fighting sword-wielding hordes wearing face-covering motocycle helmets.
-
What a classic. Mind bending how far ahead of it's time this film was.
-
Holy crap, how come he hasn't been murdered and fed to pigs for THAT one?
-
can....not.....wait....
-
These pics keep getting better and better.
-
I'm glad my whiny complaint about photos that don't actually teach us anything has been taken to heart.
Clearly, I'm a genius.
Clearly... -
Quint, I think they were actually making magic happen at 20fps or thereabouts. I don't think it was 24 at the time.
-
Movie magic right there.
-
The tough, old German chick on the left has that look.
-
What a disappointment. Woman in Suit.
-
never gets old
-
and funny to see the Anthony Daniels pictures echoing this decades later.
-
To top it all off, it's Len Wiseman so it's gonna be Total Recall PG - 13; I guess we'll get three tittied women covered in a tank top
-
got to agree there...we don't need ESB pics twice a week with 100 years of movie history
-
I was watching it the other night, and it looks and feels painfully dated. A remake would be a good thing. Not with Wimmer and Wiseman of course. If they could get a good writer and director, I'd be interested.
-
With all this renaissance style and vibe, I can't watch her anymore. Please reboot her.
-
Jk pretty cool stuff.
-
Thanks again, Quint.
-
I'm sure the pic is real and un-retouched. You can see the scuff marks and dust specks from the original. Just because it was in the '20s doesn't mean it couldn't have been a nice clean shot - the lens quality and film size are what matters, I routinely see negs from that era and earlier that blow away images from today's cameras.
-
Great pic.
Love this one.
Probably one of the best in the series. -
Is that a hairdryer or is he just pleased to see her?
I laugh alone. -
I love knowing I'm guaranteed at least 1 cool thing when I click on tomorrow!
-
Cool drink on one side, sadist with a hair dryer on the other.
-
... too bad she'd be pushing 100 now. Or dead. Yeah, probably dead.
-
Yeah, hand held hair dryers, laptops, cell phones, fax machines, iPods, they had 'em all... just made out of chrome and vacuum tubes.
-
how mind-blowing futuristic this looked back then. Today, we're just accustomed to this imagery. So visionary and influential over the decades. i.e. No Metropolis -- No Apple Mac commercial
-
But I should have known Quint would get around to it sooner than later. This is my favorite behind the scenes pic ever.
-
Girls got some nice boobies but how is the back porch? Edit out Alfred hitchcock holding the hair dyer and I could easily jerk off to that pic, thanks quint

That's the first non-film photo I've seen from Metropolis.

that still always looded to me like they're blowing air in the suit to cool her off.
