The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day doesn’t think Mozart is going to help at all.

Published at: Aug. 12, 2010, 7:19 a.m. CST by quint

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic! No, today is not an Amadeus day. I know that headline might be a little tricky. Today we get Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. There will be many pics of Hitch before this column points its toes to the sky… the dude was not camera shy and for some reason people like him, so there’s a plethora of pics of the jolly master of suspense. And a lot of them are goofy. Really damn goofy, actually, but this one in particular feels authentically goofy. I don’t get the impression this is Hitch posing for the camera. God knows I’d have a gleeful grin on my kisser if I had the view Hitch had at that moment. Plus it looks like he’s impressing the unreal beautiful Kim Novak. Showing off for a half-naked blonde… I get ya’, Hitch, old boy! Good on ya’! Here’s the pic (click for bigger version):

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here. Tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes pic finally did it! Damn you! God damn you to hell! -Quint quint@aintitcool.com Follow Me On Twitter

    My all-time favorite director

    by The Bicycle Sharer

Love Hitchcock. He's amusing when he's clowning for the camera, but like Quint said, this seems a genuinely candid moment.

  • Aug. 12, 2010, 7:30 a.m. CST

    Hitch

    by ThrowMeTheIdol

was one of the most influential directors in the history of the medium. If you want to know why people liked him on a personal basis just look up that youtube of him doing one of the first that's what she said variations on camera. He was fairly decent looking when younger and had a great sense of humor.

  • Aug. 12, 2010, 7:36 a.m. CST

    Hitch really liked Kim

    by James_Camera_On

Who wouldn't? But she was not so inclined. Sadly and predictably, she and hitch never worked together again. Vertigo remains his greatest film, however. Almost as good as Scott Pilgram.

A guy I knew who was a pilot...

    by OceanWang

This guy died a few months ago but anyways this was his story. He was a pilot who occaisionally flew some of the Rat Pack to Vegas. He said that they'd have girls with them a lot. One time, Sinatra goes over to the girls on the plane and says "Okay, who wants to blow me." One girl immediately volunteered and they went to the back of the plane. That girl turned out to be Kim Novak. Always loved that story...

  • Aug. 12, 2010, 7:59 a.m. CST

    Never a huge vertigo fan

    by lochkray

Don't know what it was. Loved North by Northwest, Psycho, Rear Window, that one on the liferaft. There was just something about Vertigo that didn't fully do it for me. Liked it. Didn't love it.

    Hottest Hitchcock Blonde...?

    by Nasty In The Pasty

I gotta go with Grace Kelly. What a GORGEOUS woman, and she always looked her best in Hitchcock's movies (especially Rear Window).

  • Aug. 12, 2010, 9:52 a.m. CST

Kim, Eva, Grace...you could add Tippi, also.

    by skimn

I could see how, with glamour lighting, Scarlett could look the part, but she just doesn't have the gravitas (oohh, haven't used that word since a 24 TB).

  • Aug. 12, 2010, 10:10 a.m. CST

    Speaking of Joan Fontaine -

    by MisterBlue

she is the sister of Olivia DeHaviland - they're both still alive, and have not spoken to each other since the 1940 Best Actress race, when they were both nominated. Joan won for Hitch's REBECCA, and they never spoke again.

Vera Miles was supposed to be in Vertigo

    by SnootyBoots

but had to drop out when she became pregnant. This really upset Hitch, who had planned on her being his next Grace Kelly. In the Truffaut book he says something like- She already had two children. It was indecent to have a third- and that he lost interest in her after that. Though he did cast her as Janet Leigh's sister in Psycho.

    Another Kim Novak story

    by Hipshot

I knew a woman who was Sammy Davis' mistress. She said that Sammy dated Kim Novak, and that the studio was terrified people would find out and ruin their investment. That he was warned off, and eventually there was an attempt on his life--an auto accident that cost him his eye. He finally left Novak alone. Don't know if the story is real, but there were people around Sammy who believed it.

OK then...do you prefer your women to not shave their pits or legs? Because by your own logic I could claim you're a pedophile if you do...or you might be a chick and you're just one of those bra burning freedom fighters with a giant mesh muff that no one wants to touch.

    Hitchcock > Kubrick

    by BlaGyver

in the sense that as amazing as both are (flamers, observe this statement), Hitchcock didn't treat actors, crew...anybody, really, like shit. Kubrick was a douche. Granted, his douchery brought amazing results, but Hitchcock shows that one can be a master without the ego or abuse.

  • Aug. 13, 2010, 3:49 a.m. CST

I guess I'd be grinning as well

Funny thing though, it's always said, that Hitchcock was a bit of a cruel director, but he seems so jolly.

it's got nothing to do with pedophilic tendencies - I'd just rather floss my teeth on my own time. Seriously, I don't mind a bit of hair, like a landing strip or something, but if they've got the full Lincoln beard going on down there, it's an instant turnoff. I am not Dr Livingston and therefore do not enjoy wading through a jungle to reach my destination.

DAMN STRAIGHT on North by Northwest! My favorite film Hitch did (and the movie that convinced me Grant could read a phonebook and still make the ladies melt). Have you seen the blu-ray? Absolutely gorgeous transfer! Psycho is coming in October to the format and I can't wait. Now they just need 39 Steps, Vertigo, and Notorious on blu and I'll be a happy camper.

    BlaGyver

    by AKA_Gern_Blanston

actually, Hitch DID treat actors poorly. Not as bad as Kubrick, but it was well-known that Hitch hated actors.

  • Aug. 13, 2010, 11:07 a.m. CST

    Famous quote

    by skimn

I may be paraphrasing, but Hitchcock was once accused of stating that actors are cattle. He rebutted that he actually said actors should be TREATED like cattle. But then why did actors like Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant and Tippi Hedren work with him on several films (3,4 and 2 respectively)each? Just cuz he was Hitch? I guess that would be reason enough for me.
