If we keep conducting nuclear tests it’s possible another The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day might appear again!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic! I’ve been holding on to a few Man In Suit pictures for a while, not exactly sure when I was going to start adding them to the mix, but then I was recently directed to a site called by a reader named Herve that had some rare scans from a Toho book on the original Godzilla film that I had to share. Today’s picture features the actual Man in the actual Suit. The Man being Nakajima Haruo and the suit being, of course, Godzilla. While some of the other Toho pics I have (that you’ll be seeing sometime during the run of the column) are more fun, this one encompasses everything I want from a Godzilla picture: Miniature city: Check. Godzilla feet: Check. Shirtless Asian Man: Check. Make sure to click it to visit BigFlyingRobots for more! Enjoy!

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here. Tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes Pic marks another return to Empire territory! -Quint Follow Me On Twitter

    by ROBRAM89

...considering how fake that model looks from any other angle. Miniature work blows my mind. Watch Dangerous Days and be stunned by how much of Blade Runner would look completely ridiculous if it were shot even the slightest bit differently.

Nice that Japan and the US are buddies.

    by CreasyBear

What if we dropped atomic bombs on the Middle East? I think they would hold a grudge a bit longer than the Japanese. They would probably do worse than sublimate their nuclear anxiety into things like bizarre science fiction monsters with nuclear breath. God bless the Japanese.

check out the original japanese version of the first movie

    by AsimovLives

It' actually a pretty serious movie, and even though Godzilla is the figure of awe, it's not the focus of the movie, but the people. Always the people. The movie is pretty serious, dark and dramatic.

I Prefer The Video Store.. I Love Physical Media

    by Autodidact

Physical media still has a number of advantages over streaming. Mainly you can watch the movie reliably without having it cut off or interrupted. More importantly you're not getting massive compression on your "HD" picture and sound.
And I just prefer the feel of walking through aisles of movies, or sifting through my own collection on the shelf, to sitting in front of a screen calling one up from a menu.

Some of the 2000 Godzillas Are Great

    by Autodidact

The last few godzilla movies out of Japan are pretty frickin sweet. The FX have a great mix of digital and model work, finally getting the scale of things to look pretty good.
One of the scariest nightmares I ever had was based around Godzilla. Just him in the distance, wrecking shit, getting closer and closer and we couldn't find the car keys.

Physical media is in it's death spiral...

    by HarryKnowlesNonExistentInceptionReview

...Blockbusters, once the titan of the industry, just file for Chapter 11. If you simply have to have a disc, you can get it from Netflix or Red Box, at least for the next few years, anyway. After a few years, though, you're on your own... learn to repair soon-to-be obsolete old Blu-Ray players I guess.

  • Sept. 23, 2010, 9:56 a.m. CST

    Great pic!

    by Blue_Demon

I remember seeing this years ago on the old Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. FM was a great source of behind the scenes pics. The same guy played RODAN according to the article. According to the extras on my GORIRA dvd, he is wearing the first suit which was deemed unusable because it was so stiff so they made a second one. Not ones to waste a good-looking pair of feet, they used the bottom half of the first suit for insert shots like this one.
And I would LOVE to read Harry's blowjob review of Godzilla 98. Was this where the whole "pwesents" thing came from?

They already did a kick-ass Johnny Socko update: Giant Robo anim

I Am Literally The Only Person I Know In RL

    by Autodidact

With a proper movie-watching setup. This doesn't count mega-millionaire friends-of-friends. Out of all the mere mortals I know, only I have blu-ray, 1080p, with proper sound setup (at least 5.1 speakers all fed discretely and positioned properly... rears above your head and the like).
Everyone else I know either has a blu-ray with no surround sound hooked up, and/or a blu-ray with their TV set to "SPORTS" picture settings... and the blu-ray box never gets used because they don't own any blu-ray discs.
Then there are the guys who think they have shit all set up but they're using PS3 to play discs and their rear surrounds are sitting on the end tables like a lamp. I realize PS3 is a decent player but it's also a bit sketchy on the sound output side of things as far as how you gotta setup your receiver/amp. So the person sitting on the right gets the right-rear, and the person sitting on the left gets the left-rear.... that's assuming any sound is going back to those channels at all, which half the time it's not.

Japanese monster movies combine the art of cinema with techniques from traditionnal theatre and puppetery. That, and any giant lizard capable of striking karate poses before throwing itself on a pagoda, can oly earn one's respect.

    Haruo Nakajima...

    by WatchtheWatchers

(who is 25 in this picture, not 16) went on to continue playing Godzilla in all the films until 1972's "Godzilla vs. Gigan" when he finally retired at the age of 43. You can actually spot Nakajima as an extra in "Gigan" and also "Destroy All Monsters." Nakajima would go on to play Rodan, Mogera from "The Mysterians", the head of the Mothra larva in "Mothra", Magma from "Gorath", a Matango, Baragon from "Frankenstein Conquers the World", Gailah from "War of the Gargantuas", King Kong in "King Kong Escapes", batmen, giant rats, and Kroiga the gryphon in "Latitude Zero", and Gezora and Kameba in "Yog Monster from Space. He may be the most prolific monster actor ever... certainly he's the only actor to play both Godzilla and Kong.
