I thought The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day smelled bad… on the outside!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes pic! If I’m not mistaken this is the first time the BtSPotD has featured the remarkable Phil Tippet, the closest my generation got to Ray Harryhausen. Except for Ray Harryhausen himself, of course. Eighties kids can still claim him thanks to Clash of the Titans. Typically Tippet worked in stop motion, but this shot doesn’t look like it’s a stop motion (or Go Motion) shot. This is why I love practical effects. Look at that. No snow, no background, just a gray sky, a Wampa head and a low angle. Perfect. Pretty sure that's Tippet's red beard and thinning hair next to the Wampa. And any Star Wars fan will look at this picture and immediately place this exact shot… right before poor Luke gets a claw to the face (a story point included after his bad car accident, fyi). Here’s the pic! Enjoy!

If you have a pic you think should be included email me. I’m looking for the iconic, the rare or the just plain cool behind the scenes shots to feature here. Tomorrow’s Behind the Scenes Pic will make your day, promise. -Quint quint@aintitcool.com Follow Me On Twitter

    Answer the car accident question...

    by guitar_dudester91

Car accident On January 11, 1977, one day before he was set to shoot one of the final scenes needed for Star Wars, Hamill was in a car accident in which he fractured his nose and left cheekbone.[4] According to Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz, Hamill was in surgery from 9 AM until 4 PM. As a result of the accident, a double was used for the landspeeder pickup shots.[5] ^ Rinzler, J.W., The Making of Star Wars, pp 249-250

That is a 4-perf camera for this pickup shot. Probably a Mitchell Mark II, hard to tell from above. Probably shooting with a scope lens, to intercut with the anamorphic main footage. FInal word on the wampa attack scene

    by catlettuce4

Mark Hamill's car accident was in December of 1976 (before the original Star Wars was even released.) The first draft of Empire Strikes Back by Leigh Brackett is dated February of 1978. The Wampa attack is in her draft, but then, the entire script was written a long time after Mark's accident. They didn't know if Mark would have scars or not from the accident, so it was written into the script that he would be attacked. Lucas can deny it if he wishes. These are the simple facts, and we fanboys all must deal with it in our own way...

  • Sept. 13, 2010, 8:37 p.m. CST

    catlettuce4

    by RPLocke

That is WRONG. Hamill had the crash AFTER he filmed the majority of SW. If you want to slander Lucas with some more false facts, go ahead. You won't be the first.

    by FeralAngel

God that show reeks. I especially hate that chick with the Walk-Like-An-Egyptian headdress. Why doesn't Lucas bring back characters with personality, like Leia and Han and Luke and Chewbacca? The old fart has been using the Star Wars franchise as his own personal Depends for far too long. Time for new blood. I vote Peter Jackson.

Noone has to slander George Lucas' name

    by bishopfan85

he's done enough damage to his own name over the years. I think anyone can agree that he'll always be credited for the great moments he's created but just like any artist who can't live up to their prior work it's only fair that there's a sting that follows the disappointment of being let down. In turn, the slander commences! But to his credit, he's done such great things in his career that there will always be hope that his next big project will make up for the failures (yes failures!).

    by Ray_Tango

How about that deleted scene where Leia senses Luke needs help and goes and saves him herself (while Han Solo smirks for the 104th time). She finds Luke and distracts the Wampa with an intense BJ which ends in a huge Wampa facial while Luke escapes ... That was pure cinema.

Did Hamill had the car accident before or during 'Empire' ? And if it's during, does that mean some scenes are shot with Luke with scar ? Because to my recollection, the only time I see Luke with scar is at the medical fascilities at the base after being put on the bacta tank.

  • Sept. 13, 2010, 10:37 p.m. CST

    That accident

    by BizarroJerry

There's a new book out, kind of a visual guide to the real-world history of Star Wars. It says that Hamill's accident was in January of '77 after most of Hamill's scenes were shot. Some additional shots of Luke in the landspeeder were then done using a stand in. Then a very early story story treatment written by Lucas in late '77 has Luke getting attacked and whacked in the face. The book suggests it was written to address Hamill's facial injuries.<p>But since we really can't know what Georgie was thinking, who knows? And I agree. I don't know what it is, but Lucas seems to like changing his story, even when there seems like no good reason to do so.

    by gantoo

Luke is a soldier, and in Empire he looked like a soldier. By this time Luke would of been fighting in the war for a few years. Soldier's are not pretty boys like Hollywood often depicts them, they have scars, and I think that Hamill's scars helped to sell his character a little better.

    wampa

    by aceldama

As others have said, no the Wampa scene wasn't introduced as an excuse for Lukes mangled face. From the very earliest scripts, the wampas were in the story. In fact, in the first draft, the base on Hoth (not called Hoth at the time, but just called Ice Planet. At the time, Bespin was named Hoth) is what is attacked by the Wampa, not the Empire. damn_dirty_ape, yes you are right in that they did have a scene of C3PO pulling a sign off of a door as a trap for the snowtroopers. And yes, they did film the scene with the snowtroopers going into the room. But they don't show anything, just the sound of the Wampa killing the troopers.

by Guy Who Got A Headache And Accidentally Saves The World

they had to invent Wampas just for that fact. Is it not fucking clear that they utilized what was already in the story to explain his scars. Are you all that fucking stupid that you can't put two and two together, you'd rather sit there and argue with nobody in particular?

    by ACKBARisMYhomie

It has been talked about by everyone from Lucas to Hamill himself. In Star Wars the Legacy Revealed they talk about it and how it affected the film. Just listen to the people that were there for once.

    Look closely

    by ACKBARisMYhomie

You don't get a clear and clean view of Luke's face before the attack, AND even if they decided to, it's called MAKEUP! People cover up scars all the time with MAKEUP!

    by Rupee88

I said it in 1980 at age 13 and nothing has changed that. I hope you were all 8 y/os when you saw it or you have no excuse.

    Hamill's face...

    by pumaman

It wasn't so much scarred, more like unrecognizable. I still remember seeing the trailer for Empire all those years ago, and thinking "noooo who the fuck have they got playing Luke , they got a different actor!!

    well in defense of Rupee88...

    by ufoclub1977

There are parts of Empire Strikes Back that seem a bit melodramatic, non plot oriented, like the entire scene of them closing the doors on Hoth when Luke is missing. And it does kind of jet back and forth between sets... seeming a bit more like a theatrical play. But this is just incomparison to Star Wars which in my opinion had a perfect plot structure/individual scenes/action pieces/exotic "real" complicated environments without featuring any silly stuff like a fake looking wampa with staccato slow motion or giant space slug, or karate flips. But Empire is still a great fantasy movie! I just think Star Wars is perfect. Why couldn't the special edition have just been cleaning up effects instead of adding to them???

ESB was my least favourite as a kid

    by THAT__SAID

I always thought of it as 'the boring one' because Luke spends most of the movie just hanging about on Dagobah. Of course when I got older and more mature I was able to appreciate the storytelling and the character development as opposed to when I was a kid and just cared about cool explosions and funny ewoks.

    They show Luke's face before

    by Nem_Wan

But his nose and cheeks are in the shadow of the visor of his hat, and people might think it's the subfreezing weather making him look a bit puffy.
