This Week's SATURDAY SHORTS: Animation Galore with a Pinch of Puppets!

Hello ladies and gentlemen, your pal Muldoon here with this week's picks of fun short films created and submitted by fellow AICN readers like you and me. This week is kind of funny in that this is an animation block style week, but I caught a film yesterday that I was so blown away by - I decided to add it to the mix. So yes, you're definitely in for some kick ass animated shorts with unique styles of their own, but also a live action short that straight up floored me. I'm still sifting through quite a few submissions, so if you're out there and possibly thinking to yourself "Muldoon! My film is solid gold - why haven't I seen it on Saturday Shorts yet? Why do you suck so much at life, sir?" Well, I don't - I probably just haven't seen it yet, because indeed I do try my best to check out whatever short hits my inbox. At any rate, I hope all of you folks out there get a kick out of this week's selection, and please feel free to shoot off your thoughts in the Talkbacks below (unless of course you're first sentence is along the lines of "Great Comment, Suzie. My grandmother also used this magical system to work from home and she just bought a Miata! Click this for more info" In which case... please, just... die.) So let's rock this!

FOAM DRIVE RENEGADES

TRT: 8:10

Bam! Right out of the gates, let's get some live action fun out of the way. This is the short that had me in stitches, in a very sick and awesome kind of way. Directed by Adam DeViller (@AdamDeViller) and written by Matt Chisholm (@RealMattChiz), this film's won audiences over at practically every festival it's played at, and you'll see why. They take something that would otherwise be kind of boring ("We've see this already a million times!") and gave it that perfect twist. It'll leave you with a solid smirk that just won't go away. "A gang of petty criminals enlists the last-minute help of a sketchy sidekick to pull off a robbery. Also, he’s a puppet." I've seen a handful of puppet films (submitted for SS) and this has got to be at the top of my list. Keep them coming, Adam!

HOW TO SURVIVE WORKING 9 TO 5

TRT: 6:22

To start off our animation block, we've got a film from Saturday Shorts alumni Teppei Ando and the gang at Murder Doll House. Now I'm lucky in the fact that my living isn't all that normal... No, AICN doesn't blow up my bank account with moneys, but I've been lucky enough to chase a dream of working in film and hurray - that means it's totally project based. I know, no matter what, "five, six, or seven weeks from now no one will be working in this building." So while sure, a co-worker might get on my nerves, it's all gravy because I'll be out of that situation super soon! That's not normal. The old "Nine to Five" that my buddies seem to have, that I think a lot of folks out there can relate to, well that's the norm and that's filled with all sorts of OFFICE SPACE style frustrations. Here Teppei hits a few nails on the head and perfectly displays a fun alternative to just putting up with your co-workers' bullshit. This is the pilot episode of Murder Doll House's web series, so if you like what you see, then fly over to their website and check out what else they've got!

FANTASTIC FOE

TRT: 4:38

Imaginary friends! The first step in a child developing severe mental issues! I kid... Next up is Matt Lee's fun short that examines the fight of the chid psychologist and his many imaginary foes... One of which is "Fantastic." (bazinga!) This short is fun and sweet - something I want to see more of in the world. Keep kicking ass, Matt!

ABINORMAL!

TRT: 6:00

Here we've got a spooky fun flick from animation miastro Joey Capps that is too perfect. "The Short Film ABINORMAL! is about our hero character Abigail, who seem’s to have some sort of condition.  Rather than trying to "exorcise" her of her ailments, Her friends choose to use the situation to their own personal gains." Bastards! I believe Joey's got an entire story line that spans out over a ton of episodes with this fun character. I want to see those. So if you're out there folks with tons of money that like original stuff - hit the guy up!

BANANA SEAT

TRT: 3:44

And to wrap us out of this silly monkey, let's check out a film from Anthony Snitzer about a kid, a bike, and an asshole of an adult.

That's it for this week, folks. I'll see you all in a week. I have a strange feeling it'll involve gallons of fake blood. I hope you all had fun this week with some of the films. Keep making awesome stuff!

If you have a short and think it belongs here or are on the fence about whether to send it in, please do send it in - I'd love to see what you've put together. I've already seen hundreds of fresh new filmmakers' shorts and like any good addict, I need more!

Shoot me an email at "Mike@aintitcool.com"

In the subject line include:

“SHORTS” + “Your film’s name” + “The film’s genre”

Then, in the body of the email, please include a synopsis of the film and any contact information you might think I need or would want published. The more info you send my way, the more info there is to put with your short.

Please don’t feel the need to submit multiple times.

Remember, the filmmakers might still be in the audience, so feel free to share your thoughts in Talkbacks below. (JUST DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE). I picked them, so you know I think highly of all of these, but how about you fine folks? How'd you like 'em?

BY THE WAY: If you've had a short featured here, that means that I personally am a fan of your work, so feel free to shoot me any kind of news on new projects/films/whatever. I can't say I'll be able to help or in what capacity, but I'm interested in your work and am always down to see more! (Keep making cool stuff, everyone!)
