ScoreKeeper Gives You A Heads Up About The Forthcoming LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING Complete Recordings CD Release!!

Published at:  Nov 01, 2007 10:05:21 AM CDT

Greetings! ScoreKeeper here with a quick courtesy call to let you know that on November 20, 2007, the complete recordings of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (2003) will be unleashed upon the masses. This is the final installment of The Complete Recordings with THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (2001) and THE TWO TOWERS (2002) released in 2005 and 2006 respectively.

It’s hard to imagine that after next week it will be possible for us to own every note of music Howard Shore wrote for this landmark trilogy. Ten years ago a recording project like this would have been unthinkable which makes the significance of this release so remarkable.

There is so much music in THE RETURN OF THE KING, 3 hours and 50 minutes in fact, that it will be a five-disc set compared to the four-disc sets of the previous two installments. Included with the complete score on four CDs will be an audio DVD with the entire work presented in Advanced Resolution Surround Sound, Advanced Resolution Stereo Sound, Dolby Digital Surround Sound, and Dolby Digital Stereo Sound.

The score features performances by The London Philharmonic Orchestra, The London Voices, The London Oratory School Schola, Annie Lennox, Renée Fleming, Sissel, Ben Del Maestro, Sir James Galway, and cast members Billy Boyd, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, and Dominic Monaghan.

This deluxe set also includes exclusive new artwork, packaging, and liner notes written by Doug Adams, author of the forthcoming book The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films.

    Great score

    by kwisatzhaderach

Especially the Gondor theme. In fact the music was probably the best thing about the films, on reflection.

Great review of this tremendous achievement from Shore. You can hear my interview with Howard SHore, as he discusses his working relationship with David Cronenberg and his epic 'Lord of the Rings' scores by visiting:

One thing I love about Scorekeeper's articles...

    by osmosis jones

...is that he always links to EVERY ONE of his previous articles. Great idea for a site without a fucking SERACH FUNCTION.

Osmosis Jones: There's a Search function

    by chrth

Not a good one, mind you. Nor an accurate one.
But considering the site it's on, I find it appropriate.

    CASH COW

    by bythehairofsanjaya

Well I wondered when the ole cash cow would start mooing again. Although I will have to admit I enjoy my Minas Tirith scale model. Only 30 years from now when I'm really senile I'll have to ask myself: "Why do you have a miniture bust of Cate Blanchet on your book shelf?"

This release marks the best day of the year

    by evil hobbit

Can't wait to get this precious in my hands. After this the Lotr movie journey realy ends. Perhaps someday Howard will come close to Holland again for a symphony concert but other then that it's realy over. To me the RotK score marks the best conclusion for a musical masterpiece imaginable. November 6 can't come soon enough!

Don't forget to add the name Elizabeth Fraser

    by seppukudkurosawa

to the list of contributors to the LOTR scores. Every time someone plays a Cocteau Twins album or watches the Lord of the Rings within a square mile of me and I hear her ethereal voice fluttering to my eardrums, I stop dead in my tracks and thank fuck she was born.

    Great. Where's Star Wars?

    by anakin whoopass

When do we get the Star Wars prequel scores, not album edits, not concert arrangements, and not the literal "sound track" of the film as edited to fit un-scored visual changes?

This is NOT the end! Even more of Shore's LOTR music to come!!

    by admonisher

How can there be any MORE, you ask? Are these not the COMPLETE recordings? Well, yes and no. Scorekeeper mentioned Doug Adams' upcoming book "The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films", which will probably be released in time for the 2008 holiday season. What he DIDN'T mention is that special multimedia content is being produced for the book, including tons of previously unheard music. We're talking early drafts, alternate conceptions, compositions that only appeared in the theatrical-edits, and all sorts of nifty "rarities". This is all being discussed, with frequent updates from Doug, at the MovieMusic.com forums: http://www.moviemusic.com/mb/Forum1/HTML/015975.html In short, we have MUCH more to look forward to!

Listen to a suite from RoTK

    by popcornscores

Over at www.ScoreNotes.com...an online suite and review with sound clips is available.

It's a mammoth score and one that needs a time dedication to listen to it (3 hours plus).

There is indeed one for Fellowship...

    by admonisher

...and Two Towers as well. Gandalf in the Shire and Aragorn singing the Lay of Luthien are indeed on the FOTR Complete Recordings, along with other vocal performances. Same for TTT -- no Gollum singing at the Forbidden Pool, though. :-)

Yeah, pushed back due to the California wildfires...

Apparently the manufacturing plant in CA had to temporarily shut down. A shame, but understandable.
