ScoreKeeper Wax Off On The New KARATE KID 4-CD Set!!

Published at:  Mar 12, 2007 9:43:08 PM CDT

Greetings! ScoreKeeper here with a fresh harvest of Varése Sarabande CD Club titles announced earlier this morning.

One of the premier soundtrack labels in the land, Varése Sarabande has been releasing extremely limited CDs of cherished scores through their Soundtrack Club division. The majority of these titles were previously out of print or unreleased.

In the past they have been responsible for pressing such gems as the complete scores for GHOSTBUSTERS (1984), BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ (1962) and THE GREAT ESCAPE (1963) by Elmer Bernstein, RUNAWAY (1984), MAGIC (1978) and the rejected scores for ALIEN NATION (1988) and TIMELINE (2003) by Jerry Goldsmith, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY (1965) by Alex North, PIRANHA (1978) by Pino Donaggio, COMMANDO (1985) by James Horner, BIG (1988) by Howard Shore, DIE HARD (1988) by Michael Kamen, PREDATOR (1987) by Alan Silvestri, and many more!

I’ve long been a fan of their CD Club releases and usually try to pick up a few titles from each wave. The scores are typically complete as much as possible with the tracks presented in the order which they appear in the film. These limited edition CDs sold exclusively through the Varése Sarabande web site are coveted by so many film music fans that titles often sell out months, weeks or sometimes days after the soundtrack is announced.

This month there is an unequivocally cool release that soundtrack fans are sure to horde for their collections; a 4-CD set of music from THE KARATE KID (1984) accompanied by the scores for its three sequels all composed by the great Bill Conti. I myself will soon be among the proud owners of this sumptuous set featuring a seminal score from my youth.

The other three soundtrack CDs that were announced in this round are THE VANSHING (1993) by Jerry Goldsmith, AUTHOR! AUTHOR! (1982) by Dave Grusin, and 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD (1987) by George Fenton.

Information regarding THE KARATE KID set is posted below. For more information on this and other Soundtrack Club titles check out http://www.varesesarabande.com.

4 CD Set!

Music Composed and Conducted by Bill Conti

To kick off our CD Club releases for 2007 we offer one of the biggest releases to yet come from our Club. Bill Conti’s score for 1984’s The Karate Kid is another of the quintessential scores from the 80s that everyone remembers. It is also a score that left film music fans of the time absolutely bewildered that such a famous score for such a successful film could go unreleased. Conti’s score is, at turns, charming, beautiful, pensive and powerful. It hits all the right notes and features none other than Zamfir himself on pan flute, representing the mystic side of Pat Morita’s Mr. Miyagi. The Karate Kid was directed by Conti’s long-time friend and frequent collaborator John G. Avildsen. Along with Ralph Macchio, who played karate kid Daniel Larusso in the first three films, The Karate Kid starred the ever-adorable Elizabeth Shue.

Conti returned for The Karate Kid, Part II with an even bigger score, expanding on his original themes and creating new ones. Even though Macchio and director Avildsen left the series after the third film, Conti returned to conclude his work on the franchise in 1994 with The Next Karate Kid, which now starred Hilary Swank as the new marshal arts expert in training.

Conti’s music for the series is absolutely stunning. Unbelievably, not one of the four scores has ever been released before. In the spirit of “in for a penny, in for a pound” we decided to rescue not just Conti’s original classic but to prepare the definitive Karate Kid box set to redress the entire situation. For Conti’s fans, this one is nirvana!

For the first time ever … four premiere releases … Bill Conti’s The Karate Kid, The Karate Kid, Part II, The Karate Kid, Part III and The Next Karate Kid are now available!

because they probably won't even sell that much. Who in their right mind would buy this? Especially since the last two Karate Kid movies sucked and the best part of the first one is all the bad/great 80s music. What the hell? Is the Karate Kid saga really known for it's music? We're not talking about Star Wars, or Indiana Jones or even Lord of the Rings. It's like someone putting out a 4 disc set of all the fine music from the Revenge of the Nerds movies. Jesus.

It's limited because of the costs involved. Why are you bitching? There's market for everything! So, you don't like it, well, others do. A lot of music in films is buried in the sound mix.

So, it's not Indy or Star Wars, sounds (pun not intended) like you don't watch anything but blockbuster movies.

    by roguewriter

I love Varese Sarabande... I must own 25-30 of their soundtracks... but I'm past the point where I'm willing to pay top dollar for a 35-minute "score." Lamentably, the days of full, rich, two-disk scores by John Williams and the like seem to be falling further and further behind us. Nowadays, every other movie is just punctuated by some lame-ass Mudvayne track or the latest from DJ Skribblewifcrayons. You damn kids today. =)

"The Karate Kid is another of the quintessential scores from the 80s that everyone remembers.."
Uh, it is? Yeah, maybe if somebody hummed it for me, I'd remember it. It's not exactly the same as the theme from "Rocky," which Conti also did. I just don't see this news as a big whoop. Even if it were about the soundtrack for "Rocky," it wouldn't be a big deal. Who's thinking about the Karate Kid these days? Much less the music from the films.

Ime sure i read somewhere that Steven Segal was lined up to play the part of John Kreese, or it might have been Terry Silver. Either way, it would have made a much more enjoyable film, watching Segal getting his ass kicked by Mr Myogi. Also Part 3 was the best.

ScoreKeeper: I need your help! Honestly!

    by thebearovingian

For the longest time I have wanted to get my hands on the score/ soundtrack for the movie Mr. Wonderful (early 90's with Matt Dillon and Annabella Sciorra). Commence laughter. I'll give you a second to regain your composure. There is this one recurring theme in the movie that I have always wished to have on a cd but have never been able to find a soundtrack. I guess as a last resort I could rip the audio from the DVD but I don't want to hear the dialogue with the music. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Best KK? Part 2

    by doc_strange

I really like part one as well but for me part 2 upped the stakes with life and death. The guy who played Chozen was kickass, like he would kick your ass in real life. Plus the Okinowan backdrop was awesome and the final battle taking place in the temple was great and well choreographed. Part 3 was cool but could have been a lot better. I think that Thomas Ian Griffith was well cast as Terry Silver. The problem with the movie, in my opinion was that Daniel didn't have to fight to get to the finals, that he only had to fight Barnes. To me that was dumb, I would have liked to have seen a montage with different participants like in the first film and also the evolution of Daniel's karate. Had that been introduced into the film, I think it would have been much sweeter.

"i've read some nerdy shit on this site but this absolutely takes the cake. Holy crap you need to reexamine your life if you are excited about the soundtrack for Karate Kid"

You are a cock. Watch the first Karate Kid again - yes the famous beach training bit - and tell me you dont think that music warrants a release. You cock.

    "Kare wa Dame-da"

    by veritasses

It's the 2nd thing in Japanese that Miyagi says to the ref before the big tournament in KK1 that Liz Shue translates as "He says you're very kind". It actually translates to "He's (referring to the ref) no good". Just some KK trivia.

    council estate blues

    by council estate scumbag

on my estate we'd beat up that karate kid for sure. no one gets to that age and remains a wimp. needs to toughen up a bit. we'd tie him to a block of flats and throw rotten vegetables and faeces at him. then he'll learn. it never did me any harm

    Some People Actually Care

    by croweyes1121

I just love the haters around here. What do you people do, just cruise the site until you find a story that looks crappy to you just so you can go post something negative? Just because something's not memorale to you personally doesn't mean that people don't remember it. Also, who cares if the series went way downhill after Part II? Does the music have to suck in a film just because the movie blows? Some people are interested in seeing these scores get released if, for no other reason, they deserve to be preserved in some form. If any of you were actually fans of music, movies or either, you might have some understanding of that.
