Hola Dannie aqui,
Blumhouse and Jason Blum have announced they are producing a reboot of the '90s wickedly exploitive Wiccan supernatural modern cult classic "THE CRAFT." The original 1996 "THE CRAFT" stars Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, Rachel True, Skeet Ulrich, Christine Taylor, Breckin Meyer, Assumpta Serna, and Robin Tunney.
Robin Tunney outed the then-unannounced reboot for "The Craft" earlier this year by saying to etalk-
“They are still remaking it. Zoe Lister-Jones is writing it. And I may or may not do it. I’m so proud of that movie. It was the first lead I ever had, and it’s a movie young girls today still watch at sleepovers. It’s girl power, and I’m so proud of it. I’m SO proud of it.”
The ladies and gentlemen at fullcirclecinema.com say the synopsis for "THE CRAFT" reboot and or sequel is-
"The Craft reboot will center around Hannah, a young girl who has to move towns after her mother remarries. Her new family comes with three step-brothers, all of which are in their angsty teen phase. When Hannah starts attending her new high school, she meets three girls who believe Hannah will help fulfill a prophecy by joining their coven of witches. Meanwhile, at home, Hannah begins to uncover a sinister plot that involves her step-brothers, which leads her to believe that her new friends may be right about her witching abilities."
According to the folks at fullcirclecinema.com Zoe Lister-Jones is set to co-write and direct "The Craft" reboot for Sony Pictures, many know of Zoe from her work as an actress on "New Girl," "Delocated," "Whitney," "Breaking Upwards," "Arranged," (directed and stars in) "Band Aid," and (writer and actress in) "Consumed." Zoe Lister-Jones is supposedly set to sit at the writer's table to hash out the script with writer Daniel Casey. Casey is known for his work as a writer on films such as (writer and director of) "The Passage," (writer and director of) "The Death of Michael Smith," (writer) "Kin," and also has garnered the role of writer on the upcoming "Fast & Furious 9" that is currently in pre-production. Casey also was involved with the film "Drag Me To Hell."
After looking into Daniel Casey on IMDB, I found a contradicting listing for "The Craft" under his name claiming to be directed and co-written by Leigh Janiak ("Honeymoon," and TV's "Outcast," and "Scream: The TV Series"). This IMDB listing also claims that Phil Graziadei who co-wrote "Honeymoon" is joining Janiak and Casey tackling the screenplay. According to the word on the web this Casey-Janiak-Graziadei "The Craft" has been in the works since 2015, and was initially conceived as a sequel and not a cursed reboot. Supposedly it was going to take place twenty years later. I would prefer a sequel, and perhaps Robin Tunney will return in the role of a mother? Could Fairuza Balk be released from psychiatric care and wreak havoc?
In '96 "THE CRAFT" was a low budgeted box office success (made for $15 million, and raked in $55 million). After Blumhouse's success with films such as "Upgrade," "Happy Death Day," and "Split" as well as others this is a remake or reboot that I am sure will shovel in the teenage cash market, and possibly play to that of generation Xer's nostalgic knee jerk tendencies.
I was a mere fifteen years old when the original came out, and to be honest, I found it quite fun. My friends and I would quote the film and laugh maniacally, so I guess I am one of those fish in a bucket that the studios are banking on. I am ok with this if its a reboot I hope its better than the original B-grade exploitive fun house. If it is a sequel I will be there with candles lit and bells on.
I do have to mention that Big Eyes just the other day in a write up for "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" said-
"Has the late 90s/early 2000s fad come around again? When everything was witches, fads cycle every 20 years or so right? So it could happen. And in a time where reboots are on fire, I’m surprised we haven’t seen a remake of THE CRAFT in the works just yet."
I think perhaps Big Eyes was hitting Hollywood right on the nail!
What do all of you witches and warlocks think of the news? Are you praising or cursing such an endeavor?
