Re: Cute Star Trek 9 CGI Critters!!!

Ugh... cute real... less screen time better... young alien boy's pet slug... ugh... hope prey it not like all other odd Treks... strange doomed feeling... Hope am wrong, mind reeling...

I've just read your 12 May report. Don't worry!! Data won't be playing with any CGI creatures in Star Trek 9! Incidentally, the film now has a working title, "Star Trek: Rebellion", Paramount registered this title with the MPAA on May 1st. I don't think much of the title and it will probably change again (hopefully). The scoop on the CGI creatures is: these are NOT Ewok style creatures - and they don't talk. The creature described by "Stryker" as "a cross between a worm and a sea-lion" is the "palm-pet" of a twelve year old alien kid named Artim - yeah, I suppose this will have a certain "cute" factor - but it will only appear in a couple of scenes - it's quite small (the sort of thing you could slip into your pocket). The "hummingbird" is a recurring motif in this movie - it doesn't talk either - for example, in one scene Picard has his perception of time altered and one of the things he sees is a hummingbird's wings slowing down (as this takes place on an alien planet I assume it will be similar to a hummingbird - not an actual hummingbird - hence the need for CGI). As far as the question of tone goes: obviously this film won't be as "dark" as 'First Contact', but expect more action than any previous Trek film (including "Wrath of Khan"). There is a synopsis of the film available on the web (courtesy of Mike Jonas) and although Paramount have refused to comment on this synopsis it is obviously correct. My source (who has seen the last revision of the shooting sript - dated 17 April 1998) says that the current script has only very minor differences compared to the Jonas synopsis).

Keep up the good work!

Paul
