Star Trek Discovery 2.5 FAQ

What’s it called?
“Saints of Imperfection.”

Who’s responsible?
Teleplay is credited to longtime Star Trek novelist Kirsten Beyer (2017’s Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum”).

What says CBSAA?
“Burnham and the crew navigate a dangerous alien landscape in a race against time to save Tilly’s life, but Stamets is not at all prepared for what they find in the process. Section 31 is assigned to help track down Spock, much to Pike’s dismay.”

How does 2.5 start?
“Make way!” shouts Burnham, running down a corridor on her way to find Tilly’s cocoon. Then Captain Pike enters the bridge, helpfully interrupting Burnham’s tedious opening narration. “Captain, I’ve picked up the trail of Spock’s shuttle,” announces a bridge officer.

Oh! Does Ethan Peck finally appear this week as Mr. Spock?
That would be telling.

“Stamets is not at all prepared for what they find”? Do they find his boyfriend Dr. Culber running a nightclub in there?
Not precisely. But Wilson Cruz’s name does appear in the title credits this week.

Is Section 31 not really a secret organization? Does Pike already know about it? Do all Starfleet captains?
Section 31 doesn’t seem to be much of a secret at all in Pike’s era. We see Pike is familiar with it when Georgio flashes her 31 badge. A fellow identified as a Section 31 liaison officer is posted to the Discovery’s bridge. (Pike is not aware, however, that he’s dealing with a Georgio from a Mirror Universe.)

How much of the episode is consumed with the Tilly storyline, and how much with the Search For Spock?
There’s a bit of Spock stuff at the start and end, but the bulk of the episode is Rescue Tilly.

Is Mirror Georgio as entertaining this week as she was two weeks ago?
I’m saying no.

Is Amanda Greyson, Jet Reno, L’Rell or Number One back?
No.

Does anybody get in trouble when Stamets uses the spore drive?
I guess? I suspect we’ll be seeing it used in the future, if more sparingly.

Has the removal of fear-ganglia strengthened ninny-ish Saru’s IQ at all?
Second-billed Doug Jones barely has a speaking part this week.

Do we learn this week why the Red Angel reached out to Tiny Spock, of all people?
No.

Do we learn this week what Burnham said to Spock to alienate him so completely? Did she call him “a pointy-eared hobgoblin”?
We don’t learn this week.

I hear the Bezos-like telepathic Talosians from the 1965 “Star Trek” pilot are back this season. Do they appear in the second episode? Is everyone subject to the Federation’s death penalty?
The Talosians do not appear this week.

The big news?
Someone we’ve not seen since 2018 returns tonight. Also, we learn Starfleet was using Picard-era communications badges long before Kirk commanded the Enterprise.

What else is CBSAA not telling us?
This episode may strike some viewers as a much less compelling “Tholian Web,” with the crew given one hour to rescue Tilly from Sporeland. Also, this is said to be the last episode scripted before CBS fired incompetent season-one showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg.

What’s good?
“The innocent don’t run.”

What’s not so good?
While far from the worst “Discovery,” I confess the next “previously on” package will render this episode highly skippable.

How ends 2.5, spoiler boy?
“I can only hope it guides us well.”

8:30 p.m. Thursday. CBSAA.
