Make no mistake "Rebel Without a Crew: The Series" is a reality show. A reality show in every sense of the word. The competitive plotline, the time constraints, the competition for resources. On paper, it is very much "Survivor" for filmmakers. In real life, it is so much more.
"Rebel Without a Crew", the book upon which this TV show is inspired, is THE go-to book for independent filmmakers. It is filled with any and every trick in the book on how to make a film and make it look good and feel entertaining. It documents Robert Rodriguez's own adventure to make his classic, "El Mariachi", for $7,000. If you are an aspiring filmmaker and you have not read this, do this right away.
The TV show follows five filmmakers as they attempt to make their own films for $7000, with each film making its premiere at SXSW 2019. The episodes are framed around a new challenge to obtain a new resource and learn a little more about the filmmakers. Each filmmaker, with their own unique personalities, goes on to make their own type of films. Filmmakers Alejandro Montoya Marín, Scarlet Moreno, Bola Ogun, Bonnie Kathleen Ryan and Josh Stifter embark into each of their genres, Everything from horror to sci-fi. Again, all with a $7,000 budget.
Although the show may be directed toward filmmakers, it is certainly a show for everyone that loves films. If you love cinema, this show is your jam. It is my new Sunday night addiction and I can not wait for SXSW to see these films!!
Sundays, 7pm EST on El Rey Network - Premiere Episode November 18th, 2018.
***UPDATE: These premiered at SXSW in 2018***
