Halloween Movies Geek-out with Big Eyes!

Let’s talk about our favorite Halloween movies! I’m going to share a list of my favorites that I like watching this time of year with you guys.

1408

Starring John Cusack and Samuel Jackson, based on a short story by Stephen King. A man goes to investigate a supposedly haunted hotel room and gets far more than he bargained for. John Cusack is great and I love this movie! It’s just the right kind of spooky flick for Halloween watching!

GRAVY

If you haven’t seen this movie yet and love Halloween, why haven’t you yet?!?! It’s a quirky horror comedy that deserves to be a part of your Hallowatching, starring Michael Weston (who somehow feels like a Charlie Day knock-off), Sarah Silverman, and more! A threesome of cannibals take over a restaurant before the workers leave on Halloween night, sealing all of the exits so there is no escape! All this to do what else, but eat them?!

MONSTER SQUAD

I’m sure you guys are much more familiar with this one! A 1987 scary kids movie! Dracula tries to take over the hometown of a group of monster fanatics. This movie has virgins, non-virgins, Frankenstein’s monster, a mummy, a creature from the swamp/lagoon, and so much more. This was one of those few movies I had on either VHS or LASERDISC that I would watch over and over and over again under the age of ten. That “Mummy came in my house” joke went right the heck over my head back then, but I was too distracted by the awesome things in it like the exploding flying werewolf and just about everything else! This movie has a ton of things in it that just shouldn’t work, but it all does in that corny 80s adventure movie kind of way!

CABIN IN THE WOODS

What isn’t great about this movie?! It’s such a wonderful satire of generic horror movies. All of these kids go stay in a cabin in the woods and what I assume are hell’s professional workers are overseeing the Hell that is about to come upon those kids. They are taking bets on whether the kids will read an evil book, solve a puzzle box, and whatever other trope you can think of that gets things going in a scary movie. The end kinda falls off but the satirization of the character tropes: the virgin, the jock, the stoner, make for a good time.

HOCUS POCUS

Of course HOCUS POCUS! This movie is such much fun! And I don’t give a flying fuck how threatened you are by Bette Midler! When a virgin teen lights the black flame candle in the abandoned house of the Sanderson sister witches, the witches are brought back to life for a single night. They have to steal the life out of children in order to live on past Halloween night. Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy did a wonderful job portraying the Sanderson sisters, you can tell that they were just “on” and having so much fun playing their parts and the fun passed on from them to the whole feel of the movie! Though Spirit Halloween seems to have latched onto HOCUS POCUS this year and hardcore sold costumes and merch on the movie. Might be some fun stuff to pick up after it all goes on sale tomorrow. There is an awful lot of virgin shaming in this movie, which is strange since it’s from Disney.

There are other more obvious favorites of mine that I’m sure you guys are familiar with! The new IT, all of the CARRIE movies. I want to say TUCKER AND DALE VS. EVIL, but it doesn’t quite seem Halloweeny enough for this list? Also, ERNEST SCARED STUPID because 90s nostalgia.

What your your guys’ favorites to watch for Halloween? Let’s hear it!
