THE SANDLOT was perhaps one of the most iconic 90s kid coming of age films, which became a cult classic. Even the thought of a prequel to it just seems rather unnecessary to me.
In a times like these, though, nothing is stopping 20th Century Fox from picking up this 25 year old classic and trying to wring out a bit more money out of it. A prequel is in the works, with the original writer and director David Mickey Evans attached, this may not be so bad. Evans is co-writing with Austin Reynolds.
The original movie spawned two sequels most of us probably never saw, including the 2005 SANDLOT 2, and 2007’s THE SANDLOT: HEADING HOME which starred Luke Perry.
It’s been a good while since I thought about THE SANDLOT, but I certainly haven’t forgotten it, as it definitely left an impression on me since my youth. The kid who lost the ball that was signed by Babe Ruth, having no idea who that was or just how valuable it made that ball. The beast-like dog that the kids feared like a behemoth behind the fence where the ball landed and the shenanigans they came up with to try to get the ball back made for a delightfully nostalgic and relatable time. I’m feeling very much like giving the original THE SANDLOT a watch right now!
I’m curious to see what comes of this. No details on the plot just yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
