DUNE director Denis Villeneuve says “two films, maybe more”

 

 

Hi folks… ThePlaylist.net is reporting that Denis Villeneuve (BLADE RUNNER 2049) is planning more than one DUNE movie. At a recent appearance at the Rendez-Vous du Cinema Quebecois, Villeneuve indicated that “Dune will probably take two years to make. The goal is to make two films, maybe more.”

There is no indication whether Villeneuve meant making multiple books into films, such as following DUNE up with DUNE MESSIAH, or splitting the book into two films, but ThePlaylist.net is sagely leaning towards the latter option, citing Villeneuve’s 4 hour cut of BLADE RUNNER 2049. 

There is a time jump in the novel after Paul begins to lead the Fremen. Splitting the films in this place would free the first film to deal exclusively with the Harkonnen betrayal and the second film to deal exclusively with the campaign to reclaim Arrakis and Paul’s ascension as the Kwisatz Haderach. And if IT is any indication, audiences seem willing to wait for the second half of the story if the first half is a complete tale on its own...
