Netflix Sweet Talks Luc Besson and EuropaCorp

The french filmmaker Luc Besson and his film company EuropaCorp is in talks with Netflix on a multi-picture deal! EuropaCorp has been struggling since the lack of success with “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”. According to Variety: the company’s value has dropped more than 60% since the release of the film last summer. It’s so sad to hear that the failure of “Valerian” has hit the company so hard, especially when Besson fans wanted it to be good and successful. I really was hoping that it would be a spin-off to “The Fifth Element” and take place in the same universe. Seems like I got that much, but the story went kind of in the “meh” direction.

Netflix is offering EuropaCorp to have Luc Besson in the director’s chair helming new Netflix originals with a budgets around $30 million each. As a part of the deal, Netflix is looking at buying EuropaCorp’s library, which is worth about $186 million. The only other company that Netflix has bought into so far was Millarworld last August, the comic publishing company that produced such comics as “Old Man Logan” and “Kingsman”.

EuropaCorp has been pretty vulnerable since last year with a crippling debt weighing it down at about $285 million. Other film companies like Lionsgate have been circling it like sharks with intent to buy.
