Hey Everyone Freddy Beans here;
This could be the best news ever! A new “Robocop” continuing the story of the original 1987 cult hit? Yes please!
Ed Neumeier the co-writer/co-producer of the original “Robocop” spoke to “Zeigeist” about his involvement with MGM creating a sequel. A concept that ignores the horrid sequels and continues the originals story.
Well I for one can’t agree more on ignoring the sequels. “Robocop 2 and 3” are right up there with “Tremors 4, 5 and 6” for this guy. I remember being excited to see “Robocop 2” and walking out of the theater that just stole my 5 bucks like I’d just been dumped. This was no ‘Rambo: First Blood Part II,” a definite step down from the original while being wholly entertaining on its own. It was a complete destruction of a movie I adored. It sure seemed like the movies were simply made to create toys and further stomp on my chest.
For me “Robocop” was a one of a kind film. There was nothing like it. It spoke about current events, while showcasing a dark dystopian future. I had to convince my group of friends to skip out on “Prom Night II” for the original “Robocop,” at the theaters. Those friends all owe me big time! We all walked out of that film spitting what were already rote phrases in our minds.
“I’ll buy that for a dollar”
“Dead or alive you’re coming with me.”
“Can you fly Bobby?”
“Give the man a hand.”
I could literally quote this movie line for line even to this day. I’m not sure a sequel works this late in the game but if they get Peter Weller and Paul Verhoeven? Fugheddaboutit!! I’ll be the first to get a ticket. Last we saw Dick Jones (who works for OCP) got fired and then blasted with bullets, out the damn window! The end.
While I love the idea of forgetting all the sequels, I’m still, I must admit a tiny bit disappointed. I think I’d like to see a dinged up and still working Robocop, thirty-one years later. It’s not like he needs a retirement, just that paste and a rest right? I’d like to see him in current times. Dealing with our current issues like immigration/mass shootings/etc. in only the way Robocop can. My mind is honestly going wild with all the ways they could create a sequel that we’d all love.
I know this isn’t set in stone and they’re simply working on it, but I’m excited nonetheless. The original film still holds a special place in my heart. Get R’ Done Ed!!!
Til next time Kids
