Sisters are grifting it for themselves in the OCEAN’S EIGHT trailer!

Hey folks, Precious Roy here with a fresh trailer for OCEAN’S EIGHT, which by one of the final moments, appears to be a spin-off and NOT a reimagining of the Clooney/Pitt/Damon series… an ‘all-female’ change-up, with Sandra Bullock as the Ocean in the equation (Debbie Ocean), and Cate Blanchett as her second-in-command, Lou, fulfilling the role her BABEL co-star Brad Pitt once played.

As with OCEAN’S ELEVEN, Bullock’s Ocean is pulling together talent that she's already determined is in need of one big score. Elements in the trailer suggest that OCEAN’S EIGHT seems to very closely mirror OCEAN’S ELEVEN on almost every level, including a frowned-upon vengeance ‘job within a job’ causing tensions between Debbie and Lou. It’s also interesting, considering the number of actors involved with this project that do not have their character named yet on IMDB, that the missing eighth member of the con could be any number of people… but common sense (and simple math) should tell you who it is in one viewing.

Mindy Kaling plays Amita, a costume jeweler; Rihanna plays Eight-Ball, a hacker; Helena Bonham Carter is Rose, a clothing designer; Awkwafina (Future Man) is Constance, an ace pickpocket; Sarah Paulson is Tammy, a cautious-grifter-gone-slightly-dodgy suburban mom; and Anne Hathaway is Daphne Kluger, the presumed red-carpet mark.

Having been interested in the GHOSTBUSTERS ‘ladies first’ remake, I was pretty disappointed by that film on its release-- and that film had some great talent behind it. I like OCEAN’S EIGHT’s line-up, particularly Blanchett and Bullock, newcomer Awkwafina, and Gary Ross as a co-writer (BIG, PLEASANTVILLE) and director (PLEASANTVILLE, THE HUNGER GAMES). But in light of the polarizing STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, it’s impossible to know yet if this film can stride the fence of updating the format to something worth turning out to the cineplex for, whilst satisfying OCEAN’S ELEVEN fans who want to see more of what they know and love.

Until next time, SUCKERS!

 Precious Roy
