“Tabook” would make George Takei say “Oh, myyy!” - Big Eyes Reviews

Animation geekette reporting! Big Eyes, here!

An interesting little animated short has been dropped into my lap, and I’m sharing with you, fellow geeks! “Tabook” is a very provocative animation that will certainly leave an impression on you. It’s a short that follows a woman named Gwen in a bookstore who picks up and flips through increasingly sexual books, and receives much judgement via looks and sighs from others around her. She was feeling pretty embarrassed at first, but she eventually realizes that it’s okay to be who she is, then finds the confidence to rise above the hate.

This short has been screened at 32 film festivals worldwide, including the Manchester Animation Festival 2016, Athens Amfest 2017, KLIK Amsterdam Animation Festival 2016, and Anima Brussels Animation Film Festival 2017. “Tabook” took home the award for Best Short Film at Cinekink 2017.

I found this short funny, and relatable when it comes to dealing with judgement in general. It was a little off-putting to see a woman nearly lose control in public. While comical, and honestly I feel that seeing Gwen become a drooling animal while the book clerk giftwraps her book takes away from the point of this short. Furthermore, ruining her panties was all it took for her to stop feeling embarrassed? Though the message of embracing your sexuality did still get across, there is probably a better way to portray the climax. I realize that “climax” is probably the joke.

Overall, “Tabook” was cute and entertaining, and (somewhat clumsily) pushes forward a message for a more sex positive society.

Thanks for reading, geeks!
