Big Eyes here,
What a concept! In “Bright”, Will Smith plays a cop in a modern fantasy world where mystical creatures live side by side with humans, and Smith’s character is forced to partner up with first orc police officer
First of all, if you’ve seen “Zootopia”, this is a fairly familiar premise. A thing became the first ever thing thing police officer and she had to overcome stereotyping to prove that she is just as valuable of a creature as any other in the world. “Bright” seems to be taking on a thinly veiled metaphor for racism toward the black community in the real world, and who else to play the white guy who overcomes his stereotyping than Will Smith, a black man.
Secondly, the world they’ve built for this movie seems bizarre as heck. Seeing an elf in a police uniform… I can’t even, you guys. Some of the visuals are quite intriguing, I do want to see what they do with this set up in the movie.
Two trailers were released today. You can check them both out, but they’re pretty much the same.
Trailer #2
Trailer #3
In these trailers, Smith calls an orc a “Shrek looking ass”. I wonder if within a world like that, calling an orc “Shrek”(an ogre) is extremely racist. Like calling a Japanese person Chinese. The “Shrek” movie itself would probably be considered extremely racist. There’s probably tons of Tumblr factions against it! I’m surprised that Will Smith was okay with coming off as racist, or if he even knows that’s what it looks like. What exactly is this movie trying to do? I guess we’ll see when it comes out on Netflix, December 22.
What do you guys think about this madness?
