It was announced Monday, Oct. 23rd that MGM will be producing a special biographic series on Hunter S. Thompson, for now dubbed FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS: A SAVAGE JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF THE AMERICAN DREAM. Davey Holmes, known for GET SHORTY, SHAMELESS and PUSHING DAISIES speaks highly of MGM support and creative daring with this project. Also along for this wild ride is Bob Nelson, screenwriter of NEBRASKA which was nominated for 6 Academy Awards, one being for his original screenplay. They hope to create long-term creative partnerships with people involved with this project.
If you've read my other article on the upcoming film FREAK POWER, you know I'm a big fan of Mr. Thompson, so I see a lot of potential with this series. There's buzz about his campaign for sheriff, his time spent with the Hell's Angels, and his relentless criticism of Richard Nixon, but frankly there's no shortage of lesser-known stories of fear and loathing that deserve their time in the limelight, I'd personally be interested in seeing an episodes dedicated to The Song of the Sausage Creature, The Strange Rumblings in Aztlan, and Prisoner of Denver (there's a documentary on this one called FREE LISL: FEAR AND LOATHING IN DENVER.
There isn't so much as an IMDb to go off of yet, but this is definitely a promising series to keep an eye out for! Glad Hunter's work is being recognized and brought to new levels of life. If I hear anything else, you'll be the first to know!
