CITY OF ANGELS

I'll be seeing this film in about a week and a half, so I'll see how this pans out. What I would like to see on CITY OF ANGELS is someone to do a comparison piece between it and WINGS OF DESIRE, the absolutely wonderful Wim Wenders film. I know when I see the film, I have to divorce Wim's film from my mind and accept this version at face value, but... ya know... sometimes that's hard. And some people can never do that. The trailer does seem good, and the past screenings did do well. I remember one review from a 15 year old that thought it was 'lovey dovey' but he liked it. And yesterday I was talking to one of my top spies in L.A., who said the script is amazing. Sigh. I hope so. Well here's Gabriel's review...

Just saw a film that is more romantic that "Titanic" could ever hope to be. "City Of Angels" stars Nicolas Cage as a "Messenger"(or angel) named Seth who roams Los Angeles watching people as they interact with each other. He meets a depressed doctor, played by Meg Ryan, and falls in love with her. Seth now has to decide if he wants to give his angel status up to be with the women he loves.

The film is a remarkable movie in the fact that it leads with its heart. Cage and Ryan are brillant in their roles. The chemistry between them is so smooth and so easy that I got distressed when the film tries to interject some plot. Brad Siberling is not a director I remeber with fondness. This is the guy that gave us the putrid "Casper". But he redeems himself with a sure hand here. The ending is something studios would freak out about, but they go with it 100%. I admire that. Dennis Franz and Andre Braugher provide support to the film, but they are not really needed. I could watch Cage and Ryan all day. This is also a film which will make you cry about a 100 times. The opening, which Seth asks a little girl about what she liked the most during her short life,is so rich with emotion that I lost it right away.

This is a great film that I want people to see.
