Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Nic Cage is one of the most fascinating big name actors of my lifetime. I can't think of any other actor who has balanced being brilliant and insane throughout his career. His semi-recent turn to crazy low budget stuff isn't unheard of as A-list actors transition later in their careers, but what's confounding about Cage is that he's been doing these batshit insane performances from the beginning. He followed up Moonstruck with Vampire's Kiss. His movie before Guarding Tess was the absolutely bonkers Deadfall.
The only time Cage is bad is when he's boring, which is rare.
So, when I hear there's a movie being sold at Berlin called Mom & Dad about parents all over the world suddenly feeling the urge to kill their children with Cage attached to play one of those murder-minded parents I can't help but feel a little spark of excitement.
THR has the scoop on the project, which has Brian Taylor attached to direct. Taylor, of course, is half of the directing duo team Neveldine & Taylor who brought us Crank and the awful Spirit of Vengeance.
If Taylor actually makes this like a real movie and not a 90 minute long conniption fit I think he's got something special on his hands. The premise is great (the story focuses on Cage's kids, his teenage daughter and her younger brother, trying to survive) and Cage can play sympathetic and creepy in equal measure, which could be magic in a role like this.
Keep in mind you'll see news of a million different things trying to be sold out of the EFM in Berlin right now and a lot of them will evaporate before they ever reach production. That's just the way things go. If this one happens I'll be very excited to see it. You?
