The Oldest Movie Theater In The UK Is Once More Open For Business!!

I love this kind of movie news…and we’re losing far, far too many lovely and vintage movie viewing establishments these days…so I thought I’d pass this along…

The Regent Street Cinema, the oldest theater in the UK, has been restored and has re-opened 120 years after it showed its very first movie.

Regent Street Cinema was the first place to show a film in the UK, the Lumiere brothers' Cinematographe, which toured the world in 1896.

[EDIT]

It was also where the first X-rated film, La Vie Commence Demain, or Life Begins Tomorrow, featuring Picasso, atomic bombs and a rabbit dissection, was shown in Britain in 1951.

…says THIS piece over at BBC.

First of all - ‘Picasso, atomic bombs and a rabbit dissection’ sounds like a can’t miss piece of madness in my book.  Secondly, as someone who staunchly feels movie theaters should remain movie theaters, as opposed to being converted into music stores, libraries, cheesy haunted houses, Laser Tag environments, etc?  This news is truly, truly lovely.

You can find the RSC’s current programming HERE.  They’re playing ALIEN and BLADE RUNNER on the same day, so more power to ‘em…
