THE MASTER is showing us some scenes!

Hey folks, Harry here...  Can't wait to watch this film in 70mm, the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz is doing a 70MM festival beginning with WEST SIDE STORY on Aug 24th - August 28th...   Then INDIANA JONES & THE LAST CRUSADE Aug 31st - September 5th...   Then the great BARAKA Sept 7-12.   Then we get GHOSTBUSTERS September 14th-20th...    and then, yes...   THE MASTER will play in 70mm 3 times a day September 21st-23rd!   And I CAN NOT WAIT to see them all!   But the Alamo won't be the only place.   Sounds like the Music Box Theater in Chicago is going to do THE MASTER in 70mm...  and soon we'll be hearing about all the places where this, the finest projected image can be seen.

But here are the clips I teased in the headline, all of which came from THE MASTER official site:

    PTA...joaquin...jonny greenwood...

    by ponyboy

PTA has been my favorite modern day director since I first saw the opening shot of hard eight (sydney). sooo glad he is using jonny greenwood again as his composer...bodysong, there will be blood-GREAT scores! & always wondered who would be the one to bring joaquin back from the depths...none other than my man PTA! hope he (PTA) gets the oscar(s)he so richly deserves!...in multiple categories! wish there was an equivalent of the Alamo drafthouse in my neck of the woods!

This movie looks like something special

    by Greggers

Maybe I'm being duped by the artsy inscrutability, but these little vignettes have me sold on the idea that this is going to be some major Kubrickian shit here. I'm in!

  • ...but, yet another plug for the Alamo Drafthouse .

  • August 16, 2012 12:05 AM CST

That's it, this guy is the new Stanley Kubrick.

    by Henri Pouper

Pound-for-pound, there's no better director working today. None. Not even Spielberg, Scorcese, or Aronofsky. I'd like to see him challenge himself by moving outside the strictly dramatic genre -- maybe some sci-fi, a Western, espionage, horror, whatever. Kubrick did it with unqualified success. But if PTA does nothing but these slow-burn dramas for the rest of his career, sign me up anyway. The guy is a phenomenon.

What clips you teased in the headline??

    by shalashaska

I see one clip and 2 old trailers. Thanks for getting me really psyched. I watched the first one and almost started crying at the prospect that I could get to watch two more. Dick.

  • August 16, 2012 12:41 AM CST

Tarantino talked about how him and PTA have a friendly competition.

    by Anti-fanboy

Only in Tarantino's mind. PTA is transcending all of his contemporaries, and taking his place among the greatest of all time.

  • And it rivets you. It's ART, in the best sense, expression with no regard for commercial appeal, marked by this sophisticated visual aesthetic, and concerned with emotional honesty.

  • August 16, 2012 1:00 AM CST

    Meh...

    by notcher

Some may compare him to Kubrick, I say he's a genius all his own, and will be remembered in a far more cerebral way when he's gone. Fucking fantastic!

  • August 16, 2012 1:57 AM CST

PTA is way, way overrated. He has yet to direct a great film.

    by Rupee88

He did a couple of good ones and that's about it.

    Hoping that PTA's talents...

    by WeylandYutani

Hit the mark here. This film looks like it has a chance at being exceptional. I mean playing at the level of Altman, Kubrick or Malick in their prime. It is amazing watching someone like PTA, who is relatively young be so good at what he does. Fingers crossed.

    PTA is a hack.

    by Fries Against

His movies have no point. You just want to like something out of the mainstream like bad indie rock. You think being a PTA fan makes you cooler and more sophisticated than the average movie fan. But really it just shows you're into crap.

PTA is a fucking genius, but let's not compare to Kubrick

    by MISTER RUMBLES

They both have very different and excellent styles.

  • Not that they're actually similar, but I think the point is that they're both willing to take real risks and explore new territory-- which is frickin unsual these days. I'd never say he's trying to emulate Kubrick, but I think one can draw some general comparisons-- heavy tone, intellectual distance-- and just a willingness to play around with pacing and other cinema conventions that most directors seem to think are enforced by law. One would never say Lynch and Herzog are actually similar, but you could say they both aren't afraid to be bizarre and come up with things on the spot, and throw something up on the screen without really having it nailed down. These folks are peers, in other words. And we need more of 'em!

  • August 16, 2012 10:55 AM CST

    not gonna watch these...

    by JAMF

looking forward to this one too much dammit.

  • August 16, 2012 11:21 AM CST

No doubt, PTA and Kubrick share similarities

    by Mel

Their films are like a horror lullaby. They'll sing you to sleep but there's always something dark hiding in there. And I don't mean they're boring, I just mean they tend to make you feel comfortable. They may seem fun and light-hearted at first, but there's something really fucked up always lurking. They also both have phenomenal pacing.

    Stay back, bitches

    by Ralph Scifaretto

PTA is very talented, but all his movies are flawed: "Sidney" is probably the most solid film he has, but still a small movie which vanishes as soon as it's over. "Boogie Nights" is nothing but a Tarantino /Scorsese rip-off with little originality (despite talent in crafting and writing). It hasn't aged well at all. "Magnolia" is magnificent in many ways (despite being, again, a Scorsese / De Palma / Altman rip-off). But it all falls apart in its uncomprehensible, stupid third act (A frog rain with surrealistic / allegoric connotations? No, basically a guy too lazy to finish his script substituting it with a big "Fuck u" to the audience. Well, fuck you, Mr Anderson. You're not fooling anyone). "Punch drunk love" is, simply put, a mess. "Let there be blood" is awesome in some bits, but still overlong, unengaging and boring. And I fear that with "The master" PTA is going down in self-condescent shit. I hope I'm wrong (there's nothing like a good film), but watching the trailers... I sincerely doubt it. On the other hand, best director of his generation? WTF? He only has 5 films in 17 years, none of them a masterpiece! Considering that he belongs to the same generation as Nolan, Fincher, Tarantino, Anderson and Singer... that's saying a bit too much. I myself consider that the best of them all is Nolan, despite all the haters.

    Joaquin Phoenix

    by Nic_Cages_Hair

Just give him the damn Oscar

  • August 16, 2012 2:15 PM CST

I think it's safe to say now that PTA is interested in MAGNATES.

    by justmyluck

porn magnate = BOOGIE NIGHTS media magnate = MAGNOLIA oil magnate = THERE WILL BE BLOOD *religion* magnate = THE MASTER

  • August 16, 2012 2:28 PM CST

No, I'm sure Ralph will fit right in.

    by chifforobe

Nolan and Fincher are for a bourgeois audience that wants to feel it's watching something deep and edgy, but doesn't have the stomach for anything truly challenging-- in my humble opinion. Their movies have a cool artsy veneer, and the characters often blurt out complex-sounding concepts that I guess, if you're high and in high-school, seem deep. But it's just more popcorn fair with a little annoying pretension thrown in-- in my humble opinion. But we each have our taste, as Ralph's totally empty breakdown clearly shows. You could say 'Punch Drunk Love' is, simply put, a mess-- if you're late for a bus, I guess-- or you could argue that it's a perfect damn movie. I love that thing. But there's no accounting for taste. I guess it could've used more Batman, to be fair.

  • http://blogs. indiewire. com/theplaylist/paul-thomas-anderson-secretly-premieres-the-master-in-santa-monica-first-reactions-are-wildly-positive-20120804 (As always, mind the spaces.) Funny how Phoenix may win Best Actor when a few years ago he said he was leaving acting for good. Yeah, that was real, and also he probably didn't have to do much "acting" in this, as he's really that messed up. PTA = great opportunist.
