Hercules Says Do Not Miss Tonight’s Naked, Crazy GAME OF THRONES!! Discuss Also MAD MEN, GIRLS, VEEP, 60 MINUTES, KILLING, METALOCALYPSE, ONCE, A Return Of SHERLOCK!! AMAZING RACE & BITCHES Finales!! SWEEPS DAY 11!!

Last week. On "Game of Thrones."

Smokezilla stabbed Renly and Margaery expalined she wanted to be THE Queen, Stannis decided to proceed to King’s Landing without Melissandre, Tyrion got called a demon monkey and discovered an alchemist churning out wildfire for the Lannisters, Prince Theon got little respect from his crew, Arya bore the cup of Tywin Lannister and learned she can kill three people with her mouth, Brienne joined Team Stark, Bran dreamed the sea came to Winterfell, The Night’s Watch devised a plan to kill deserter and wildling leader Mance Rayder, and Dany met a warlock, got a marriage proposal and learned of King Robert Baratheon’s demise.

HBO says of tonight’s “The Old Gods And New”:

Theon (Alfie Allen) completes his master stroke. In King’s Landing, the Lannisters send Myrcella (Aimee Richardson) from harm’s way in the nick of time. Arya (Maisie Williams) comes face to face with a surprise visitor; Dany (Emilia Clarke) vows to take what is hers; Robb (Richard Madden) and Catelyn (Michelle Fairley) receive crucial news; Qhorin (Simon Armstrong) gives Jon (Kit Harington) a chance to prove himself. Written by Vanessa Taylor; directed by David Nutter.

* Stannis Baratheon and Jamie Lannister do not appear this week.

* Tyrion finds himself with more to worry about than wildfire this week.

* This is easily Theon’s biggest episode to date! BIG! His scenes are CRAZY and AWESOME.

* It’s a huge episode for Dany’s Dothraki too.

* We meet a spice king this week. I quite like him.

* Craster’s wives are long gone, but I suspect Jon Snow thinks a lot about his vow of celibacy this week.

* We learn a bit about Tywin Lannister’s dad this week.

* Something important is stolen.

* And, to bury the lead: Osha, the stunning wildling slavegirl who’s always hanging out with Bran and Hodor, gets very, VERY naked this week. Natalia Tena – who went clothing-free in 2005’s “Mrs. Henderson Presents” and a 2006 episode of the U.K. TV series “Afterlife,” failed to get naked in any way when she played Nymphadora in those Harry Potter movies.

Previously. On “Mad Men.”

Peggy Olsen decided to live in sin, Megan Draper almost singlehandedly recaptured the fleeing Heinz account, and Sally Draper glimpsed Marie Calvet fellating Roger Sterling. Sabrina Fair! Oh, and Ray Wise returned as Ed Baxter to explain why advertisers can no longer trust Don Draper. (It’s weird that Wise’s character is almost named Ted Baxter -- the man with Leland Palmer’s face now reminds me a lot of Ted Knight.)

No Betty. No Lane. I liked how the Howard Johnson’s episode casually foreshadowed the arrival of Megan’s parents. The scene with Pete Campbell and Ernie Calvet really drove home how Pete has grown into his job in the last six years. Martin Balsam’s fabulous daughter Talia (former wife of George Clooney; current wife of John Slattery) made her first appearance as Mona Sterling since 2009.

AMC says of tonight’s “Lady Lazarus”:

Peggy is irritated by a secret she has to keep. Pete covers for a friend and Don gets unexpected news.

“Big Brother 13” winner Rachel Reilly could also win “The Amazing Race” tonight. The CBS promo says “for the first time ever the finish line is not the end of the race.” Huh.

Next Sunday: the big “Survivor: One World” finale.

“Mad Men,” already renewed for next season, took a nasty dip last Sunday while “Game of Thrones” grabbed its first uptick of the season.

“The Good Wife,” already renewed for next season, closed out with a finale that drew a season low of 1.7. That was no help to “NYC 22,” which hit its own season low:

  • This season has been pretty great so far, and from what I understand we haven't even gotten to the really good stuff yet. I was a bit concerned whether they would be able to keep up the S1 quality, but they have for sure.

  • ...but Natalia Tena? Ah, go on then. If you insist !

  • May 6, 2012 6:33 AM CST

...and where the hell are Jojen and Meera Reed?

    by BiggusDickus

Surely they're going to be vital for what's about to go down Bran-wise?

So much great stuff to watch. Don't forget about The Killing as well.

GIVE US GAME OF THRONES TALKBACK SEPERATE!!!

    by vini77

For fucks sake, it's the most watched show on Sunday and one of the highest on television of all time. Separate that shit.

  • I am still slowly finishing the first book and loving it. The first 3/4 of it, I just flew through. But time constraints and short periods of free time at a time are making it difficult to get through the last bit. Best book and show I've seen/read in years. I'm just enjoying the heck out of the whole thing. I also think the more you pressure Herc to give GOT its own talkback, the lower the chances are of it happening. I would bet you TONS of money that if everyone would have calmed the hell down back a few years ago and shut up about it, we would have had years of Supernatural talkbacks. lol I'd be annoyed after a while. I remember years ago setting up this elaborate birthday surprise for my ex, and hiding all the planning very well. Getting closer to her birthday, I was being coy about her present and the plans. She assumed that meant I hadn't put any thought into it and started to give me shit about previous birthdays. So I scrapped that shit. It's annoying. So I can understand on a certain level. It can just get to be too much and you shut down. Meh, I guess it was kind of an asshole move on my part.

I think that sat there for like 5 minutes before it finally posted. Hope it didn't triple post. :( Sorry if it did.

    Herc, respectfully...

    by BiggusDickus

How about arranging a separate Game of Thrones Talkback next time in much the same way as Merrick does for Doctor Who? I know the GoT crowd would love you for it, and I'm fairly sure the Mad Men lot would too! Pax.

This show has two of my favorites... Carice and Natalia.

    only 4 eps left

    by animas

after tonight, and nothing has happened except the gay king got killed. I used to think 10 hours was too short for a season, but most of the story lines have been dragging .....

  • May 6, 2012 9:25 AM CST

    I want to complain more

    by animas

without Boromir , this show has really no central character with any weight. I was hoping for more Sarah Connor but she has had like 10 seconds of screen time the whole fuckin season. Who is the main character now? The mother of dragons? Nothing has happened in her story line (and she hasn't been naked) Jon Snow? nothing has happened... Tyrion has been the only good part of this season.

  • May 6, 2012 9:38 AM CST

    Re: GoT lagging

    by happybunni

Yeah I agree, and I blame it on budget issues. I think they had to save most of their budget for what's coming up... That's why we haven't really had anything epic this season so far. It's just all been set-ups for the last couple episodes I believe.

  • May 6, 2012 9:47 AM CST

Rank your top five "Game of Thrones" badasses

    by Toe Jam

I haven't read any of the books, so mine are based only on the season and a half of the TV show: 1. Littlefinger (pulling all the strings, it seems) 2. Khal Drago (RIP) 3. Tyrion (becoming quite the badass) 4. Tywin (asshole, but quite badass) 5. Sandor (will he even show up again this season?)

  • May 6, 2012 9:58 AM CST

    Toe jam

    by Tim

Yes, Sandor will absolutely show up again

  • Lot of good plot points I think they'll hit tonight, including a HUGE one. I love this season, but can't say nothing has happened because of budget reasons...this is the nature of the second book. New characters, Dany pretty much stagnant, slow build... but tons of shit happens, and everything will be turned upside down again by the end of the season

  • May 6, 2012 10:05 AM CST

question for people who read the books

    by animas

Is Cersei a completely minor character? Lena Headey is the biggest actor they have left and I thought she was going to be featured doing all sorts of evil like her son.

  • May 6, 2012 10:26 AM CST

Cersi's not a minor character in the books.

    by heylookoverthere

They start doing chapters from her point of view eventually. Arya comes face to face with a visitor? Don't remember that from reading.

  • May 6, 2012 10:34 AM CST

    Top 3 babes on GOT...

    by WeLiveStill...OrNot

The dragon-blonde is #1 by far. #2 is the chick that was married to the gay-king guy (I'm horrible with names). And #3 is the wildling chick. Which is why I'm going to be sitting 2 feet from the t.v. with my beach towel spread out on the floor. Oh, the joys of Sunday night.

  • May 6, 2012 10:35 AM CST

    In this series

    by fuzzy_dunlop

Everyone and no one (of the 'leads') is the main character. The books are told from the point of view of a different character every chapter. So everyone is a protagonist at some point, and an antagonist at others. It's up to the reader to decide what side they're on, if any (I remain a spectator to the story). That's the genius of the series.

  • May 6, 2012 10:44 AM CST

Dany vows to take what is hers

    by mus42

Is this a running joke? She makes this vow every week - whilst looking supremely hot of course.

    Natalia Tena naked? I'm in.

    by Sardonic

She's got a great set of titties.

  • Because plainly she is the hottest.

    GoT - Nothing happening????

    by johnnyangelheart

I remember in the old days some Soprano talkbackers where always complaining "nothing is happening" unless a major character got killed. Well, you can't have a major character to kill unless you spend some time developing that character. And that's what GoT is doing right now. Developing characters. And then it will kill them. ALL of them. Characters you hate. Characters you love. And then your snarky snears will turn to tears. BWAHAHAHAH!!!

  • May 6, 2012 11:28 AM CST

    Arya's visitor...

    by BiggusDickus

    Nymeria?

  • May 6, 2012 11:57 AM CST

    I really, really hope...

    by RedeyeJedi

That they don't end up completely excising the whole Little Bird and the Hound storyline, as well as the Reeds and the Boltons. Those were easily some of the best parts of the book, along with the turn of events regarding Theon and Jon from this point, love it. I actually think this season is moving a bit TOO brisk if anything.

  • May 6, 2012 12:04 PM CST

Arya comes face 2 face with surprise visitor?

    by Cymbol

Who are they talking about? Maybe they'll be changing a death again?

  • 1) Varys - You won't understand why until you've read Dance with Dragons, Martin's latest. 2) Ramsay Bolton - An absolute sociopath who rapes, covers his subjects in human excrement, pulls out prisoners' nails and teeth to torture people, makes his servants engage in all sorts of S&M fetish games. The guy is danger on horseback, and increasing in power. Being bad ass does not mean being a good guy. 3) Oberyn Martell - Because he did what no other man could do. Without posting spoilers, see Storm of Swords. 4) Ser Barristan Selmy - Same as Varys above. 5) Victarion Greyjoy Honorable mention to all of House Greyjoy and the Ironborn. As a nontraditionalist myself, who is always questioning why we hold to certain traditions for the sake of tradition itself, i.e. the National Anthem, high school reunions, Thanksgiving, etc., I totally get the Ironborn philosophy.

    Hey, Biggus!

    by PantherMatt

I feel pretty sure Jojen and Meera are not being used, and instead will be combined with Osha. Seems to be the way they're going. Of course, where does that leave Rickon?

  • May 6, 2012 12:34 PM CST

    Sick fixx, badasses (book spoilers.)

    by heylookoverthere

Nice list but how could you leave off Wyman Manderly? Motherfucker killed three Frey's, baked them into pies, and served them to their family. Not only that but he ate like six slices himself. and then later when one of the Walders is murdered, he openly taunts the Freys about it to the point that they try to cut his throat. The north remembers, bitches.

  • May 6, 2012 12:38 PM CST

RE: the reeds (vauge book spoilers)

    by heylookoverthere

They will introduce at least Meera next season. Osha won't want to go north of the wall, she knows whats up there and when she's introduced she is trying to flee south. Plus her going to Skagos with Rickon is important. Since Osha has to go with Rickon, that leaves just Bran and Hodor for the next two seasons, and they won't do that. Plus they have to introduce Howland Reed somehow. I assume the reason they pushed them back is A) there were a lot of new characters to keep track of already and B) child actors grow, so better to delay introducing them for their small part this season and having to worry about them looking totally different next season.

    My Badass List

    by Crow3711

    1) Victarion Greyjoy - Badass Personified. I love the way he thinks. 2) Varys & Littlefinger - I don't know who is more of a boss. Probably Varys after dance with dragons, but Littlefinger has big plans. Dude is dangerous. 3) Oberyn Martell - the Red Viper of Dorne, not only does he have an incredible nick name, and beds sexy ladies to birth even sexier and badass daughters. Aside from that, his epic scene in SoS is the single most badass thing I've ever read, more exciting than most filmed movie scenes. I was on my feet. It was gutwrenching. 4) Robb Stark - Often overlooked because he's such an obvious hero, a Stark, and he's off screen/page so overwhelmingly. But, he's The Young Wolf. He never lost a battle. He's a strategic genius. He used Grey Wolf like a boss. He captured The Kingslayer and smashed Lord Tywin. He also commands the extreme loyalty of his bannermen. He falls in love with a beautiful girl and stands by his choice like a man. He's a different sort of badass, a thinking mans badass, but a complete basass nonetheless. Stannis Baratheon - The Lord of Light is made of Iron. The hardest man in the land. Doesn't ask things of his men he wouldn't ask of himself (usually). He's unrelenting, stubborn, and at times, too hard for his own good. He's also brutally honest, hilariously NOT full of any shit at all, and he does what he believes needs to be done out of DUTY, not glory or selfish bullshit or jealous. He really believes he HAS to. He saved the wall, thus saving the entire kingdom. I just love stannis. I find him endlessly fascinating.

You've gotta give it to Barrastian. The man's past 60 and still owning people half his age (I forget that pit fighters name.) Others who haven't been mentioned: Donal Noye - Dude had one arm and died protecting the wall by killing Mag the Mighty, a giant. Mance Rayder

  • May 6, 2012 1:09 PM CST

You should definitely go back and read the first two.

    by heylookoverthere

The show changes some things that might confuse you later on. Also the books just flesh (almost) everything out more. Things like Ned's dream about how his sister died in his arms are just omitted entirely from the show.

  • May 6, 2012 1:31 PM CST

Don't Start on SoS. Stupid move.

People Who Say Nothing is Happening Remind me Of...

    by Crow3711

People who ended up saying only s1 and s6 of lost mattered. It's called a journey. Yes, that's the beginning and The End, whee the most drama happens and all is revealed, but it's not what matters. The journey IS the story. These plot points in between are what make the characters matter. It's the meat and veggies of the story, because as complete and satisfying it may make something, two pieces of bread a sandwich does not create.

  • May 6, 2012 2:40 PM CST

its not a stupid move... its a lazy move

    by yourSTEPDADDY

I might do book 1 n 2 after I'm done with 345 but for now I'm cool with my decision. sure I missed out on some stuff but I wont miss it. Ill jjust think of it as the star wars prequels

    regardin nothing happening

    by yourSTEPDADDY

I think people only say that if they're not invested in the show or characters. me, any littlefinger, stannis, renly, tyrion, and/or arya scene has somethin happening imo because I like those characters. hell even chars I hate has shit happening. so something is always happenin, you just don't care (enough)

  • May 6, 2012 2:57 PM CST

It's Both Lazy and Stupid IMO. You're Gonna Be Lost

    by Crow3711

So many details changed, characters altered or outright removed, storylines changed. It's te little details. I firmly believe you get very little true enjoyment out of this. Unless you just straight up don't care about getting the story the way it was meant to be told. But obviously it's not my problem. Do your own thing my man. Just know that, out of the first book alone, you are missing some seriously important details for many characters that aren't in the show but are incredibly necessary for understanding of events in feast and dance. You'll be so focused on reconciling in your mind what you know with what you don't you'll be missing half of what you're reading anyway. Enjoy!

The cracks started to show last episode

    by gooseud

Its not the fault of the writers, but there is simply too much to cram into the show. How can you do Brans storyline without the Reeds? Who is he going to talk to? Hodor? How can they do half the storyline without the Boltons? Plus, having Tywin rule Harrenhal instead of Roose Bolton makes Arya look like a total retard for not having him killed, thus making one of the highlights of the season look weak instead.

  • May 6, 2012 3:14 PM CST

Ha, That's True About Tywin Instead of Bolton

    by Crow3711

Very perceptive. It really does make her look a little stupid. I know that even in the books she admits she uses 2 of her 3 choices fairly poorly, but having Tywin around is too obvious to not I after. I agree there is way too much in the books for the show to handle and the cracks are showing, but overall I think they're doing a good job so far. I'm ok with no reeds if necessary, but the Boltons need to show some prominence soon for that story to pay off with Reek later. My biggest gripe is no Beric Dondarrion. I know he's minor even in the books but he casts a big shadow over many events, and he's a real weathervane for showing the reader the real power of R'Hollor. It's important you know the red god doesn't fuck around. The tickler torturing people for information on "them" was very confusing for nonbook viewers I know. They had no idea who he was looking for. I just think Beric is cool, and he needs to meet up with Catelyn also, so I hope he comes up early next season

people who skip the first book..

    by rapscallion86

You are doing yourself a huge disservice. Yes Season 1 nailed almost all of the important plot points and characters but that doesn't mean you should skip to a later book and here's why. GRRM's (the author) dialogue is FANTASTIC and the point of view story telling for each chapter really makes it enthralling. Also, you get so much more history about past events out of the books and all of it is important and relevant.

look I get it, the show doesn't cover everythin that had happen. but I only care about what will happen (one because I can't wait for the new season to start when this one ends AND because the GoT book readers who can't help spoilin book shit that pf course will spoil future seasons) basically, half the reason I'm readin the books is to avoid spoilers. so, there's nothin left for me to be spoiled regardin S/B 1 n 2. so no. not readin book 1 or 2 is not a disservice. its technically a waste of time for me.

    by Fico

Yes I have read the books and love them dearly. Even if the books could be properly adapted (they can't), what fun would that be? I'm excited to see the changes they'll have to make. Will the Reeds come into play later? Will Osha take their place? Isn't it kinda cool not to know every detail that's going to happen? And if we don't like it, we can complain about it here like we do for every other goddamn show anyways. :)

    Boltons & Reeds

    by fain88

Roose already showed up this season--they know the Boltons are too important to leave on the editing room floor. I feel the Reeds are the same way (*spoilers* hello, Jeyne + Robb = Red Wedding, right?). But the introduction of the Volatene woman in the previous episode, and her interaction with Robb, are getting me worried. I hope it's that they're holding off on more child casting until they get to S3...but now that I think about it, I actually might be fine with Show-Osha filling Jojen's role.

Books Out of Order? Why Not!

    by fain88

The great thing about aSoIaF is the way GRRM uses the differing character's viewpoint, and really does go out of his way to explain and re-explain things through different character's eyes. So even starting with book 3, you'd still be on a pretty even playing field, with all the exposition he throws around. Think about it...it's not like book 1 was in any ways the "start" of the story; Martin himself said in the commentary track for "The Pointy End", the ep he wrote last season, that things which happened 15 years, 300 years, even 3000 years ago still have relevance on the "today" of the books. It might be really interesting to read book 3, hear about the awesomeness of Ned Stark, and then go back prequel-style and get to see him in action. It'd be like if Martin ever decides to write a book minus-1 set during the rebellion, and had Rhaegar as a POV character. How awesome would THAT be?

    Ned Love

    by Bill Forbes

I don't get all the Ned love, was he a good character sure. Legendary ? Hell no. Selmy? Now thats legendary. The guy snuck into a guarded castle and rescued the KING just in time before Tywin was going to burn the place to the ground. Ned was GRRM's way of telling his readers that people who put honor above all else end up with their head cutoff.

#1 Reason for Reading the Books In Order...

    by tye dye mann

besides, you know, reading the story from beginning to end the way it was intended, is because only Ned's chapters from the first book illuminate one of the biggest and (IMO) most important mysteries in the story: who is Jon's mother? GRRM tells you exactly who it was and why it is so important in that first book, but if you were to just begin with SoS, I doubt you'd know that that was an important plot point.

  • Namely, that the person who dies in the godswood is not going to die in the show, and that they will accompany Bran and/or Rickon to where they end up going. This theory is based on the fact that GRR Martin and the show runners are apparently quite impressed with the actor playing the character who dies in the godswood and want to give them more to do. Personally, I think that would work. The way I see it playing out, Osha will go with Bran and Hodor, while the person who dies in the godswood will go with Rickon. Either that, or they will all travel together. Either would work, I think.

    Tonight's episode (SPOILERS, obviously)

    by TheGreatHomsar

The Good: -Ramsay Bolton. Hell yes. I was worried they were going to combine his and Roose Bolton's characters, but it sounds like The Bastard is in it after all. -Ygritte. Good chemistry with Jon Snow, plausible reason for him getting time alone with her. -Arya and Tywin, always good. The Not-so-Good: -Riot scene in King's Landing was a little weak, I though. One of my favorite scenes in the books ("Brother-fuckerrrrrr!!!") The Bad: -Taking of Winterfell. Waaaaaay too rushed. Not properly shown (would it have killed them to show the Greyjoys climbing the walls at night?) -Dany's constant idle threats are starting to undermine her character and make her come across as a petulant little girl. A very rushed episode, I'm afraid. My least favorite of this season.

Maester Lewin. I love the actor they have on the show (he has wonderful chemistry with Bran), but his death is a pretty dramatic moment in the books. Honestly I'd prefer it if he died, but I guess it makes sense to keep him on if they choose to do so. I, for one, don't miss the Reeds at all. Annoying characters, the both of them.

Is anyone else still not buying her Volantis origin story that she is feeding Rob? We find out that she is at least a lady this week, or knows quite a bit about customs a lady (I personally think a Westerosi lady, but could still be a lady from Essos) should know. Catelyn caught Robb staring a little too long... Can't blame him.

  • May 6, 2012 9:50 PM CST

    Re: lao_hu

    by TheGreatHomsar

She did mention that she always thought she was "an excellent liar."

  • I mean honestly how hard is that? It's one line, and its her characters iconic phrase. They handled the character beautifully, the actress was wonderful, but they couldn't put 5 words in her mouth to make readers happy? That shit pisses me off so much. Whoever wrote this episode is a douche because they clearly did that on purpose, there is no other explanation. Aside from that, I understand what they are doing with this dragon thievery, but it's not necessary. It will make things more dramatic though. I wondered how they would handle the house of the undying because in the books its very confusing, in my opinion, and they don't really have a great identity when she is there, so its not entirely understood how dramatic it is when….Dany does what she does there. But this way she goes there with a more express purpose than "just visiting" and she has beef, so it'll be clearer why what happens, happens. I think the prophecy and everything will still be the same, they will say the only took the dragons so she would come to see them, Drogon will get pissed off, and…yea. So I get it. It's a decent change.

  • I don't really understand how that helps at all. Could have just called her Jeyne Westerling and she's there serving, whatever whatever. WOuldn't have been very difficult. Oh well, I guess it makes it even more of an insult to Frey when he marries some common girl from a far away land.

It shall be interesting.

  • May 6, 2012 10:14 PM CST

    @crow3711

    by Patrick

Question for you: Are you saying that she could have just named her true self at her and Robb's first meeting? If she told Robb that her name was Jeyne Westerling, then he or someone else (Catelyn, at the very least) would have known immediately that her family served the Lannisters. They would not allow her, a sworn enemy, to stay in the camp as she was in this episode. She could still really just be "some girl from Volantis", but it seemed to me that we are beginning to see that she is not really who she says she is.

  • May 6, 2012 11:10 PM CST

Why are you debating an idiot who starts in the middle?

    by gooseud

PEople have two choices: dont read the books at all, or read the books from the beginning. Reading the books starting in the middle is idiotic. Its like saying "Gee, I've never seen Star Wars. You know whats a good idea? Starting midway through Empire. BRILLIANT!". As far as being a snob....guilty as charged, I dont like retards, sorry. Although, I gotta be honest, the opinion of someone who claims they arent going to read 1 and 2 because they dont feel like buying them when they are available on Amazon for like $2.50 apiece.......not really carrying alot of weight there.

  • They got that right, and all I'm saying is its easy to make a character say the words they're supposed to say. If she's saving it for later fine but if they just don't use it that's annoying. The Hound was awesome by the way. The dany scenes are getting a little old at this point but I enjoyed that the spice merchant even played to this sort of laughing at her when she made her little fire and blood speech. Good stuff.

if you think someone MUST read from the beginning makes you a snob/fanboy. i have not had any issue or confusion while reading book 3. i dont call people fanboys/snobs without them forcing their opinion on others, like a fanboy/snob will do for whatever reason that you think im retarded because i didnt start from the same position you did, makes you a fanboy/snob. this only makes me lazy. like ive said over and over today, i may go and read book 1 and 2. i am just too lazy to read more than i have to now and time is of the essence. im sorry i dont have as much free time as you fanboys/snobs. its that simple and do you realize that i am a fan of the show/book, yet youre trying to argue with me because im not doing it the way you are doing it. if you dont realize that is pure fanboyism/snobism, then you are as delusional as you are faithful to these books seriously guys, you all are mad that I am not readin from book 1. wtf is wrong with yall? go find a wench or a gay guy or something because you obviously care too much about my choice in readin a book ie. youre fanboys/snobs

    The Hound Scene...

    by Patrick

As the three men approached Sansa in the hallway, my gf tells me straight up that she was not watching anymore of this bullshit. I then proceed to tell her that someone is going to come save her, so she would not be forced to watch one of her favorite characters get raped... Instead, she sees a couple throats being cut and a guys intestines ripped out with the Hound's bare (OK, gloved) hands. Well, she did not see anything TOO bad happen at least. This show was a little too intense for her, and I have to say that I cannot blame her.

  • May 6, 2012 11:23 PM CST

    I haven't seen this week's episode yet...

    by Elaine

... but I read somewhere that Talisa is who she says she is -- a girl from Volantis. She is not Jeyne Westerling in disguise; she is the girl who is taking Jeyne's part. I'm not sure why they chose to replace Jeyne with a girl from Volantis, but there it is. Also, you guys... I did my best not to spoil the event in the godswood, and you just went in and spoiled the hell out of it. So much for subtlety, eh? For what it's worth, GRR Martin and the show runners have also expressed an admiration for Natalia Tena, who plays Osha, and they're seeking ways to give her more screen time, as well. Which makes it likely that she'll be the one to accompany Bran, rather than Rickon, whose story is dealt with off the page. Either that, or Bran and Rickon are travelling together.

    She didn't get THAT naked...

    by Jaka

....but I guess it was naked enough. I sure as hell thought she should have killed Theon, though. Nobody but that one guard would have had any clue who did it (in the tv version, anyway).

Damn Arya is such a great character on the tv version of GoT. I'm actually fearing reading the books now because I don't want her character to be weak sauce in that version of the story.

Another great episode, though. They're doing a much better job at moving along each characters arc than they were at the beginning of the season. Even the small, short scenes are adding something to the overall story.

I don't find Dany boring. She comes off as very broken, immature and pretty close to delusional. I think she's playing that role well. I figure, in the future, she'll end up being totally bad ass, or continue down the path we're seeing right now and get the shit kicked (or killed) out of her. Either way, I'm interested.

She looked so great tonight. Even with her clothes on. Smouldering eyes on her. A little scary. I like that.

    No love for NURSE JACKIE?

    by supertoyslast

One of the best shows on TV right now.

  • ...of course, referring to them as "porn shows". How long before we get yet another "Mommies of America"group wanting to save us all from quality television?

  • Where are the Freys? -- They are as much of a player as anyone else. They populate, and breed their way into power and they're going to become important soon.

Also the theft of Danny's Dragons is some really stupid, life-time channel stuff. "Not without my baby!" I'm finding her story line much more frustrating, and her character isn't nearly as strong as her book version.

Last, $20.00 says they pussy-out on the ending of Book two.

    Sick of this Reeds/Osha crap...

    by kells

Okay, I get it - you love the Reeds, for some completely unclear reason to me, and you don't see HOW this series can POSSIBLY unfold without their presence, or the whole Howland Reed factor, and you're spitting mad at the OUTRAGE and the complete lack of RESPECT for GRRM's audience by not including them yet. And now, the unpleasant truth that you won't like but which should absolve me of ever having to read this mewling drivel again: 1. Howland Reed has never been mentioned in the television series - and therefore ANY character can be introduced at some point who has the secret to Jon Snow's parentage. They have changed things already - they can change that. Again: NEVER mentioned. Therefore - completely unnecessary. 2. Osha won't want to go north of the Wall: says who? You are implying character traits and feelings to a character who has already been changed from the book and can be further changed. Maybe her loyalty to the little lords will now make her willing to do things she wouldn't otherwise. Maybe a big fucking raven will appear and tell her she has to go north of the Wall. Who knows? 3. Goddamn Reeds: Bran develops a crush on Osha. Whoops, there goes Meera's only relevant purpose for the narrative that Osha couldn't already provide. JoJen's green dreams are pretty much unnecessary if you take away HIS character, because most of them hint at his own death anyways. Explaining or exploring Bran's dreams can easily be done by Osha if you give her some sort of mystical Wilding knowledge of crazy mystical shit, which they have already hinted at her having. Whoops, there goes JoJen's only relevant purpose in terms of the narrative. Oh wait, I forgot about Howland Reed...oh wait, no I didn't...UNNECESSARY. 4. The writers of the show can do whatever they goddamn well want to without giving a flying fuck what you people think. And lest ye forget: Martin is consulting and in on all storytelling decisions. If the Reeds were really vital to the storyline, do you think he wouldn't have said, "Uh, guys, you can't cut the Reeds because etc."? Therefore - if the Reeds are necessary, shut the fuck up and wait for it because they'll be there. If the Reeds aren't necessary, shut the fuck up because Martin has told them they can axe them without issue, and it is already a done deal. Christ. Fucking Reeds.

  • May 7, 2012 9:30 AM CST

They already included "the lightning lord" in season one

    by heylookoverthere

I dunno that he said anything, but they showed Ned sending him out. They'll probably just recast him. Kells, I was just listing reasons why I figured they'd include the reeds, I'm not 'outraged' at their absence cause as you say they're pretty minor. I just think Bran needs someone to talk to who can say more than Hodor. Someone brought up the idea that they might spare Luwin, that would probably work. I don't think they'll replace Howland Reed with another character, he's bound to be important later in the books. It's worth noting that the people running the show don't always listen to Martin. I read in an interview that he told them not to kill Maggo last season because he becomes important in the next book, and they did it anyway.

    by 2for2true

Caught this purely by accident last night, and really got hooked on it. I've already got it in my que, and will definitely go back and watch all previous episodes. Miles better than the recent Robert Downey Jr. films.

  • re: "The CBS promo says “for the first time ever the finish line is not the end of the race.” Huh" The promo I saw showed what happened (but not who it happened to). Although I had a feeling the team that had to go back would turn out to win it (whoever they might be). Amazing that all 3 teams screwed up at some point. It really was anyone's race. Art & JJ were always complaining, mostly about Brendon & Rachel, about other teams just following them instead of figuring out the clue on their own. Is it irony that the thing that really lost the race for them was them doing the exact same thing they criticized others for (and it biting them in the ass when the lead car lost them)? Rachel may have read the clue, but Brendon obviously didn't listen, as she clearly said "make your way on foot". I understand he was tired from the challenge but, buddy, take 2 seconds to catch your breath by reading the clue with your partner (and maybe help her figure out what it means since, you know, it's Rachel). Major Dave & Rachel - he's a bit of a dick, but I liked her, so, out of the 3 remaining teams, glad they won. Although, like following a team instead of knowing where you are going, or misreading a clue, being told to go somewhere and "find your next clue" and instead coming across a task not a clue and thinking "that's what we're looking for", was a stupid mistake that I can't believe anyone in the final leg should be making. They were lucky to win; that is, lucky the other two teams also screwed up in a big way.

    by SID 8.0

It was good to see The Hound actually have a righteous kill for a change. Anytime Joffrey gets slapped is great, "Hit 'em again Endo." Poor hot Dany all that pontificating ain't going to get your babies back or get you a ship. Glad Osha got the Starks out. Theon trying to take the title of biggest asshole away from King "Kill 'em all." Joffrey. That was heart- breaking. Can't wait to see what happens next. By the Jon I've got a serious weakness for redheads too, I feel ya brother. And people who have read the books thanks for ruining Robb's fate for me. He's my favorite character after Tyrion.

Goddamn! This season has been awesome.

    by Patrick Pettay

Loved watching that little shit Joffrey getting pelted with cow shit and to paraphrase Herc, Tyrion showed that his "Imp" hand was strong. The Hound running in to save Sansa and the butchery that followed was quite nasty. I have not read the books and I know I shouldn't like him , but Tywin is becoming a character I actually like. He has this great relationship with Arya and has shown he has no patience for fools. I know he will probably show his badder side later on, but for now he's my second favorite Lannister. On top of all that we get to see Tonks naked. Suck on that Harry Potter.

did anyone else think the peasant mob scene was...

    by thekylegassproject

...clumsy? i mean, literally. as in, shot very poorly.

also, i think one of the key elements of that scene in the book is the fact that stannis' open letter about joffrey's true parentage seems to have done the trick because the crowd was yelling out things like, "BROTHER FUCKER" and the like.

but none of that was going on in the filmed version of the scene. that was a powerful scene to me in the book and i very much felt like they botched it. although tyrion dropping his pimp hand on joff and cuttin' that head back to the fat meat was just as satisfying in either medium.

    Tywin

    by TheGreatHomsar

If he weren't such a cold-hearted bastard, Tywin Lannister might even be considered the most competent person in Westeros. He's brutal in his judgments, but fair (if not entirely "just"). And he has a brilliant tactical and political mind. He absolutey does not suffer fools. Unfortunately, the death of his wife destroyed what little humanity he had left. And he clearly is a lousy father, which has terrible repercussions for the realm. And yes, thekylegassproject, I thought the riot scene was underwhelming and clumsily shot. I mean, why was the king of the entire country walking through the street? Wouldn't he at least be on horseback? I'm not a book purist, but I wish they'd included the "brotherfucker!!!" line. It was hilarious the first time I read it.

  • After the initial attack, where Brother Fucker was indeed sorely missed, I thought the scene with Tyrion and Joffrey was pretty great, and everything with Sansa and the hound was also really awesome. Even though they didn't have brother fucker, the cow pie leading into "Kill Them All!" was pretty solid I thought. And the High Septon being ripped to pieces was also right out of the book, I only wish they had shown the fancy Crystal Crown being stolen. I don't know, all in all I thought it was pretty good I guess.

    Most Entertaining episode this season

    by eguang

This episode was as entertaining as an episode of Starz's Spartacus. Wow!, it was a very well balanced episode. it still had the good dialogue, scenes, scenes with tension, action, nakedness, scenes that raise my adrenaline leves and made me say Yes! like when the Hound rescued Sansa, scenes that made me laugh, etc. I know I am going to get harrased by the fanboys but I wish they woud plan and edit the episodes of GOT like they do with the Spartacus series where every episode contains all of the above type of scenes.

  • May 7, 2012 2:47 PM CST

    I thought the scene...(SPOILERS)

    by TheGreatHomsar

at the beginning with Theon and Ser Rodrik was phenomenally good. Overall, the fall of Winterfell felt EXTREMELY rushed (I mean, c'mon, would it have killed the budget to show some guys climbing the walls at night?) But Theon trying to act like a hardass in front of the Ironborn-and botching the shit outta the execution- was top notch. Very realistic (muscle and bone is extremely difficult to slice through in a single stroke) and great characterization. Gotta love Rodrik's words to Bran, too. "I'm going to see your father." *sniff

  • May 7, 2012 3:02 PM CST

In regards to the riot in Kings Landing...

    by Tim

Yeah, they were all supposed to be on horseback...obviously would have made it better, and I assume they were on foot because of budget. They cut the "brotherfucker!" but it's just one of dozens of great Martin lines they've bafflingly cut from the show so far. (I was more upset they called it a cow-pie...wasn't Joffrey hit by a piece of human shit in the book? Much funnier!) All in all though, adjusting my expectations to their budget, I thought it was well done. Love that they showed the septon get torn apart by the mob and Tyrion's verbal.physical beatdown, followed by the Hound's rescue of Sansa were both fucking gold. I'll say it again--though it was jarring at first to start the episode in the midst of Theon's invasion, the first 10 minutes of the show were some of the best it has ever done. The look on Theon's face after he very ungracefully chops off Ser Rodrick's head...pure lunatic

And WTF is with the Kings guard???

    by Tim

In the books they make them seem like these fucking special forces, not-to-be-fucked with, best 7 warriors available type of group. In the show we get Meryn Trent, who looks like a fucking chump, and that's it. I love the show, look forward to it every week, but the main thing that they can't translate to the screen in just how badass some of these people are supposed to be. For example: I feel like those who only watch the show think Jaime is just some prissy punk, and have no idea he's supposed to be one of the best swordsman in existence.

  • May 7, 2012 3:23 PM CST

    The Kingsguard

It's hard to hear but it's there. Also Lollys made her cameo in that scene. Sure the riot scene wasn't as grand as the book's was but isn't that kind of to be expected now? They've got more important things to blow the budget on coming up. I'm just glad they spared us the throwing of dead babies in front of Joffery path.

Almost anyone who was going to see it was either in the UK when it aired, or downloaded it from a site here in the US. The powers that be really fucked up royal by making the US market wait till May.

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid. Great show though.

  • Yeah, the wildling girl got naked ...but, no sex. There hasn't been a typical GOT sex scene for a couple of episodes now. I'm not upset by the lack of sex as much as the idea that a show like this would actually bow down to a bunch of people who are obviously just looking for something to complain about or who are so weak and fragile that they can't even handle a sex scene on a premium cable TV show. No one bitched about how graphic the violence is. And violence is much worse than seeing naked people engaged in sex. So, we're replacing sex with violence in our media. ...that won't have any negative effects on our society. (And don't even think about using the "it didn't have anything to do with the plot" bullshit. Every sex scene HAS had something to do with the plot but also, more importantly, the characters as well.)

    by Jaka

No you didn't. You saw a woman standing there naked. You can see twenty or thirty of those on any given episode of Spartacus. Now I understand that could just be because I pictured here differently in my mind (and I did). But not one other casting choice bothered me like she did. Even if I didn't see them that way to begin with, I got used to the actors chosen for the parts. For me, Natalia Tena just never worked as Tonks. Not, I don't know, "cute" enough.

The Kings Guard (non spoilery for non book readers)

    by gooseud

They USED to be the biggest bad asses on the planet. Anyone who has read the books (from the start and who didnt start with book 3) knows that (in one of the great ironies of the story, one of those ironic things that Martin loves so much) the Kingsguard of the Mad King's day was ultra elite. They were also super principled and really good guys. They just were trapped by their vows into serving a fucking psycho. Its basically said that Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, was the equal or better then Barristan Selmy. There is a flashback where 3 of the Kingsguard are cornered and refuse to renounce their vows, and proceed to regulate on like 20 guys before they are finally brought down. During the battle, Arthur Dayne goes head to head with an in-his-prime Ned Stark and completely takes his lunch money and would have killed him, before Ned is saved by Howland Reed (hence why you are hearing so much about the Reeds in this TB, they havent shown up in the show yet). The problem is, now Kingsguard positions are given away by the Lannisters as political rewards instead of on merit. Hence why Selmy says "Even now, I could cut through you like a knife through cheese" when the Kingsguard tries to step in to protect Joffery.

    TAR + Killing

    by Truxton Spangler

I'm still waiting for when they'll make the final tasks hard again, with a mental challenge. There really wasn't anyone to root for this season. Of the final teams, the right team won; they goofed up and still won the leg, like they've been doing all season. They deserved it. Certainly not going to root for the whiny crybaby, or the cocky meathead border patrol agents who ran their mouths constantly. I'm not going to speculate about the stuff at the Indian casino, because if they stay true to form, it won't matter in the end anyway. And Linden's kid is starting to become a drag; and the scene where they flee -- WTF? When the series ends, it will be with Linden/Holder fired for being shitty cops, and just as shitty human beings.

I've read the books (I was the one who said something about the kingsguard originally) but I didn't get the impression that they were somehow "weak" now or anything, and you're completely wrong...it wasn't given out as a reward to lesser knights until Feast for Crows I believe, when the Kettlebacks were introduced. The stories absolutely paint Oakheart and Meryn Trent and Boros Blount as badass motherfuckers that could kill pretty much anyone. Ned's flashback/fever dream is maybe my favorite 2 pages of the series. Was heartbroken they didn't include it in the first season.

  • They haven't introduced Tyrion's squire at all...Pod I think his name is. He plays a pretty integral part in Blackwater when he stops Mandon Moore from killing Tyrion. You think they'll have Bron do that?

in the dinner scene where Tyrion sends Janos Slynt off to the Watch. He makes a point of mentioning his new squire by name, if I remember correctly.

It's not that the knights of the Kingsguard are weak

    by heylookoverthere

It's that they Kingsguard was for a couple hundred years made up of the best and most noble knights in westeros. The sword of the morning, the white bull, barristan the bold. Now they fired barristan and put someone whose nickname is "the kingslayer" in charge.

The fact that the actor playing Theon elicits that strong of a reaction from you should indicate that he is, in fact, a rather fine actor. I will not put him on par with Peter Dinklage, but he sure has held his own this season. I would not be surprised to see an Emmy nod for his S2 work.

    Talia...

    by IAmYourFather

Can sit on my "Iron Throne" anytime, if you know what I mean... But seriously, Rickon's story is not very important to the entire plot of the books, so I don't understand why people are having hissy fits about characters not showing up who are supposed to help him escape. It is Bran's story that becomes much more important later in the books, and it is being handled that way by the producers. I for one am glad that my two favorite characters, Arya and Tyrion, have had great scenes this season. Tyrion's way of handling all the whisperers in episode 4 was a classic.

  • The thing is there are still at least two, probably three books that haven't been written yet. The last one ended with Manderly sending Davos to get Rickon back from Skagos so they could install him as lord of Winterfell. He'll never be a point of view character cause he's just too young, but I think he will still be important. He should also have some good stories to tell since he spent the last few years on "the island of cannibals and unicorns."

  • ****POSSIBLE SPOILERS**** It's funny but I still feel bad for poor Theon. His chapters in the books are some of the best (especially in Book 5). But HBO fleshed him out more and I still feel bad for him although he is a total dick. He's just a lost soul looking for a family and acceptance. As for Tywin, he is so awesome in the show. I almost want to see what he would do in the show if Arya just let him know who she was. I know he would take her to Casterly Rock or King's Landing but you almost want to see how fatherly he would be. He obviously likes her and takes care of her in a way. Good stuff. As long as you simply divorce yourself from the books you will love most of the show. The one stupid thing was wouldn't it have made sense if Osha killed Theon before escaping? Duhhhh. That made no point for her bedding Theon other than to see her amazing figure...no complaints there. I do with they said "brotherfucker" during the riot. I also wish the iron men put the beatdown on Hodor like they did in the books. It would have just broke your heart and added more tension and sorrow for the big guy. Also with the Hound wore his helmet when saving Sansa. That would have been the cherry on top of a great scene.

I agree, really awesome on show and I too like the pleasant interaction with Arya. However, I don't doubt for one second that he wouldn't tear her to pieces if it meant getting Jamie back. He is all about his own, period. I think he genuinely likes Arya. But I don't think that is enough to counter his cold, calculating, evil soul. Charles Dance is so perfect for this role!!

  • May 8, 2012 12:29 PM CST

So was that a look of recognition on Littlefinger's face?

    by heylookoverthere

or just a look of "what is up with this serving girl." I think it's possible, but unlikely he recognized her and didn't say anything.

  • It's a tv a show and if he didn't recognize then that episode, while an excellent piece of direction and a highlight of suspense and tension, is utterly pointless. It moves nothing forward if he doesn't recognize her. And because this is a tv show, and a bloated one at that already, I would think they wouldn't really include that just because its fun. Especially considering the scene ends with him bringing up the Stark girls to Tywin…he's too smart for these games, Mr. Littlefinger is. I think he definitely knew it was her by the end.

    Crow3711 (book spoilers)

    by heylookoverthere

I think it's safe to say that by this point on the show he's at least hatched his Dontos/Sansa plan. Maybe he didn't say anything because he doesn't want the Lannisters to have both girls and be able to trade them back for Jamie. As for the scene itself, I think there could still be suspense and tension from the "will he recognize her" bit instead of "will he say something"

  • Remember the part on the bus, when she was bitching at him and kept cutting him off everytime he spoke, all the while fixing her makeup? I laughed, thinking, "right there, that's the rest of your life, pal".

  • I've done something similar with shows like The Tudors or The Borgias - now and again my curiosity will be piqued by a character I'm not already familiar with so I'll look them up on Wikipedia or my pocket encyclopedia. And there have been times I've learned something that the show deals with that turns out to be a spoiler. I mean, yeah, I know everyone on those shows eventually dies, just not always when or how.

  • This is a guy who believes "knowledge is power". He'd keep it to himself until he could figure out how he could best use that knowledge to his own benefit. I got the feeling he didn't outright recognize her, but there was something about her that was a bit distracting to him. Like his gut was trying to tell him something but he had no idea what it was and he was more bothered by it than enlightened.

    by yourSTEPDADDY

yea the main non "I can't wait to watch season 3" reason i sstarted reading the books was. because everyone seemed like they were "team stannis". I couldn't understand why so now I'm reading the books. funny thimg is he is not even a pov char

  • I don't think they'd cast a proficient actor for characters which play minor parts in the earlier books but are required to make background appearances now and then I.e in the throne room. For instance the knight who escorts Mercilla to Dorne (Oakheart is it?) barely features at all until book 4 when his role becomes more relevant to the story. Why pay an actor to make background appearances and not have any dialogue until 2 or 3 seasons later? We did catch a glimpse of a kings guard knight sat at the front of the boat shipping off Mercilla but we only saw the back of his helmet so no worry about recasting here. The same can be said for the lightening lord Beric Dondarion - he had a short scene in season 1 with Ned Stark when dispatched to hunt down the Mountain but will feature greatly in future seasons so someone other than an extra will be needed then. It's pretty obvious to me and by the way the whining on here is getting ridiculous. "waaaaah where are the Reeds"....... Thank fuck they haven't shown up because theyre boring and not essential. It makes sense to utilise some good actors and expand their roles (Osha). This weeks episode was fabulous. Some powerful scenes in Winterfell and did anyone else notice how good the acting by the lad who played Bran was when he pleaded for someone to hell Rodrick Cassell during his exection? Funniest moment was Joffrey being rag dolled away from the rioting crowd whilst flailing his arms shouting "kill them all!". Dany becoming annoying now and I'm start to cringe at some of her cliche speeches. Question for everyone - did anyone else think it was a bit off and unrealistic during the riot scene when the septon was dragged to the ground and had her limb torn off? It was in the space of 5 seconds and even a machete wouldn't even doing that quick!

  • She's not Jeyne in disguise, in the show there is no Jeyne, and instead what happens with Robb & Jeyne, and the fallout resulting in the red wedding will now just happen because of Rob and Talisa. Seems pretty obvious. Afterall the main reason for Jeyne is just to set up the red wedding, who she was specifically doesn't really matter. Having said that, I think Talisa feels really out of place in this show, and seems like a very modern type character that doesn't quite fit.

  • Everything about it just screams 'not enough money', and comes across more like something you'd see on SG1 than GoT. I also think it was a mistake to shoot the Qarth stuff in crotia where they shoot King's landing, its just a bunch of white people standing around, there's not sense of it being an exotic 'middle easterntype' city, It should feel like Istambul, where you can almost smell the spices, and everyone is tan skinned, and the streets are crowded with vendors and slaves and silk and weird animals. This just feels like it all takes place in the same building with the same 15 white extras in the background. it's the one part of the series thus far that feels very much like they couldn't afford to do it properly.

  • I will admit, though, to having to check IMDb after that "Mad Men" episode to triple-check I could finally tell the two actresses apart.

  • May 8, 2012 8:44 PM CST

Yeah I'm curious to see what they are doing with the handmaidens, in the book the hot hooker one died in the red waste, but the other one, the dothraki girl is still alive now. Then they had that weird scene a few weeks ago where the dothraki one got all upset for some reason, which seemed like a set up for something, yet now she's dead. The fact that they didnt show the hot one dead in ep6, gives me hope she is still alive.

How about just reading the books because they're enjoyable to read. Knowing most of the plot points doesn't invalidate an pleasurable experience. You never rewatch a movie or reread a book? You seem to place a lot of importance on knowing what happens (continuity etc) so why not read the earlier books and collect some more plot points? Or just enjoy all the great dialogue and scene setting. All the background knowledge and character building only enriches the whole experience, which is why the book fans are getting testy about changes, their affection runs deep and long. Although I guess you don't want to turn into one of "them"? aha.

They definitely yelled it during the shot when the soldiers were bringing Cersei into the keep. You have to listen for it tho, I don't think anyone would notice if they hadn't read the book. Also, there was a rather large lady getting her dress ripped off that had to be Lollys. Wonder if they'll mention her this week. Can't decide who had the best facial expressions this week: Jaqen's exasperated look at Arya, or Cat's mom face when Robb's talkin to "Lady Talisa." htt p://i.imgur.com/U8vGx.gif Only fucked up thing about this episode: Irri gettin killed. Not all book fans get mad about the changes

    by Rebel Scumb

I for one think they've actually improved on a number of things in the books. There are a few changes that seem odd to me, but for the most part I consider the show a worthy companion to the books

  • I think a lot of people are forgetting about just the reality of casting a TV show and the budget involved. The reason they aren't developing the kingsguard is because later on if they want to focus on them they can then plug in any actor they wish for that role, instead of paying them for several seasons to stand there and not speak. This way they can just use an extra or a stuntman as a place holder and not show their face or give them lines. As for the Reeds, they could just as easily introduce them in season 3 easily, and just change the reason/place that Bran meets them instead of having them fostered at Winterfell.

  • I just assumed to keep him on the show before his story starts up again they would invent a whole bunch of scenes of him attempting to escape.

    by heylookoverthere

I'm shocked too. He's been out five episodes now. In the books he does make an escape attempt, Tyrion sends those mummers with Cleos Frey. It's actually pretty funny when one of them imitates the commander's voice and gets the Riverrun guards to open the gate for him. They could include that in the next episode, even though they left out Tyrion's planning of it. David Cloverfield, Feast is the worst of the books, I don't think anyone disagrees. That having been said there's some good stuff in there. Like Sansa's and Sam's chapters. I remember not liking the iron island chapters until Euron showed up.

  • May 9, 2012 10:44 AM CST

    Re: Skipping through Feast

    by skycrapper

Brienne's last chapter in Feast is probably the best of the book. Also some pretty important clues are dropped in her chapters about the fates and whereabouts of certain characters. Plus Pod is pretty funny. I'll admit it's not the most compelling of the books but there's some good if not great stuff in there.

  • Dance of Dragons had great chapters...all from the people I would not have guessed. The best chapters were Theon/Reek; Davos; and Selmy. EVERYONE was dying to read about Dany, Jon Snow, Arya, and Tyrion but their chapters were totally weak...well Arya's were pretty good. Dany had one chapter that kicked a great amount of ass but for the most part her stuff was very dull. You can tell in Book 5 that GRRM was getting all his ducks lined up and getting the timelines back in order. That is why some characters did nothing but nibble on figs or eat warm bread from the ovens the entire book. Overall I felt Feast was a more complete book. But they were both aftermath books dealing with what Book 3 delivered. I expect Winds of Winter to kick unholy ass. If it ever gets released.

    Dragons

    by frank

Am I correct that the dragons were not stolen in the books? I don’t remember that happening. I do remember wondering WHY they weren’t stolen, though. Wouldn’t it have been easy to do with Dany’s ragtag company? What happened in the show makes a lot of sense, I think.

  • Wondering what the scenario will be for her takeover of Herronhall. I am guessing Tywin will leave for some reason or another before it happens. Or maybe he will still be there but will escape during the fighting. Very unlikely that they will have him get captured, I think. Probably there is not time for Bolton to take over this season. Seems more likely that Arya will just run away on the same night that she frees the prisoners.

    by frank

Seems like they combined the hooker handmaiden (Doria?) with one of the Dothraki ones in the show. Wasn’t she the one that taught Dany to pleasure Drogo in season 1? Hopefully she is still alive and will continue to be Dany’s faithful, sexy companion for many seasons to come.

Interesting...I had the same thought. I don't remember the dragons stolen in books either. If that's the case...kudos to the TV writers. The fact that someone didn't just take the dragons in Qarth was what I considered a plot hole in the books. In the book Tywin and Arya are there at the same time, she just wasn't his cupbearer. Tywin, Gregor and almost all of the army leave to go fight Robb and Amory Lorch is left in charge of Harrenhal. Vargo Hoat and the Bloody Mummers also stay. Then Hoat betrays the Lannisters and (along with Weasel soup) helps Bolton overtake Harrenhal. Then Arya becomes Bolton's cupbearer, and eventually takes off with Gendry and Hot Pie. Obviously Lorch is dead now on the show, and afaik Vargo Hoat was not cast this season, so who knows how they'll do it on TV.

RE: Winds of Winter kicking unholy ass *MASSIVE SPOILERS*

    by skycrapper

The only thing I've heard the bearded GRRM slip about Winds of Winter (and maybe he was being glibb) was when he was asked in an interview about addressing how many different POV's he's got going on at the moment was him saying - Well I think I'm going to be killing off some of those POV characters. Now I think he started killing off one of the main POV's with Jon Snow. Now I don't think Jon is dead but his resurrection into AA will be told from another POV. Maybe Melisandre or maybe Tormund Giantsbane or both. Perhaps Sam comes back into the wall picture somehow. I think that would be awesome and make Jon more of a legend from this point on. I don't think one of the POV's of Jaime or Brienne will not last the encounter with Stoneheart. So yeah Winds of Winter will probably be intense.

    by cat_herder

There do seem to be more changes to the storyline lately. By and large, they've done a nice job adapting things to the limitations of TV. The Ygritte stuff doesn't seem particularly well-written so far though (unfortunately, a friend of mine saw the show with me for the first time, and commented on how cheesy it was). And I'm kind of curious how they'll make Bran and Arya's stories work well without the Reeds and the Many-Faced God. As for the guy wanting to start the storyline in the middle, I don't think he's being lazy. He's making it a lot more work than it otherwise would be to follow the story, since the TV show and books are beginning to deviate significantly from each other now.

SPOILERS - Dany's arc, Unsullied and budget restraints...

    by BiggusDickus

I agree that theDany stuff is really looking cheap. Not 'bad' cheap, but 'my God, we need more people in the scenes - even if they're CGI' cheap. Like 'Sharpe' depicting the Napoleonic War as Sean Bean fighting the same handful of French Cavalrymen over and over again, the lack of extras is now so distracting it's pulling me out of the story. Qarth is a heaving, thriving city - the jewel of cities - yet I'm not getting that impression, are you? God knows how it'll look when Dany gets to see 'row upon row' of Unsullied. If it's half a dozen bodybuilders in spiked helmets, I'm going to feel awfully short-changed... As a devotee of the books (and I am loving this adaptation, by the way!), I'm intrigud to see where they're gping with the dragon theft/Dothraki massacre. With Irri/Jgiqui dead and Missendei yet to appear, Dany's 'close' circle is now basically Jorah and Jogho/Rakharo (or was that his head last week?) Frankly, bring on Strong Belwas and Arstan Whitebeard!

Whether you're following the babble of someone above or babbling on yourself, there's zero reason to talk about Books 3+ on a Talkback about the television show's first season. Having reread the nonsense spoilers you wrote, there's even less reason to write anything at all. Why do people like you think anyone on this planet gives a rat's ass about the overly obvious plotting you think would be awesome seven seasons from now? Don't worry, as a reader you spoiled nothing for me. I just take offense at this place's ability to attract humankind's worst dregs, as well as making people who were faithful to the series look bad, and feel sorry for all those who stumble across these pages, enjoy the format of Herc's previews, and then immediately dive face first into the foulest pool of nonsense the internet has to offer outside of YouTube Commenting.

    okay?

    by skycrapper

If this place disgusts you so much then why are you posting here? Again dude, I will write a warning if I'm about to post a spoiler as a lot of other people do. I don't get why your venom was aimed specifically at me, but take a xanax man.

yeah skycrapper did post a spoiler tag, what more can be asked?

    by Rebel Scumb

There are plenty of assholes who put the spoilers right in the subject line. I agree that's a douche move, but skycrapper is not to be blamed.

    Can't believe people misesed Sherlock.

    by HollywoodHellraiser

I honestly didn't see the S2 premiere until tonite and it was fantastic! I love GOT and MadMen but its now either Sherlock or GOT on first viewings. Shit, I hate when the network/cable do this shit to viewers.

Game Of Thrones & Mad Men

    by LapdogOfSatan

Anyone notice how Jon Snow's "hostage", Lady Talisa, and Theon's wild whore look like they're ready for a GQ shoot? Why not put a subtitle onscreen that says, "We're major characters now"? I love the show, never read the books, but some of the situations and even dialogue are so predictable. Still great. As far as Mad Men, It really does keep getting better. I mean, literally every ep. someone is saying to themselves, "Is this the life I should be leading?" Do what I do, force yourself to wait a week, then watch the previous weeks' episodes on demand right before the new ones. Delaying pleasure enhances it, don't you know?
