New This Week

It saddens me to say the seventh season of “Weeds,” which jumped ahead three years from the very strong sixth season, was the weakest with depressing plotlines about Nancy’s parole, her losing her baby, her estrangement from her older sons and Andy’s dalliance with a dying weirdo. Was series mastermind Jenji Kohan bored, or running out of ideas, or battling an attention deficit? “Weeds” will be back for a eighth season this summer; let’s hope Kohan can tap more promising premises than the ones she explored last year.

“Borgia” should not be confused with Showtime’s “The Borgias,” even though they’re both newish TV series about the same people. This one stars John Doman (who was William Rawls on “The Wire”) in the Jeremy Irons role. It was created by an American, it stars an American, it was shot in English, but it played on French and German TV and never played on American TV! It was created by Tom Fontana, who created both the terrific “Oz” and the horrible “Bedford Diaries” and “The Philanthropist.” Barry Levinson is credited as an executive producer, as he was on “Oz,” “Bedford Diaries” and “The Philanthropist.”

  • Even paying $3 for Godfather III as a box set "extra" is too much. It just is.

    Everwood- $10

    by obriensg1

Every season of Everwood was $10 for about 3 weeks at Best Buy in January. I only owned season 1 so I dropped $30 and scooped up the rest of the show.

The Godfather was not a TV show

    Great deal

    by Stephen Ott

Even if you never watch Godfather 3, this set is loaded with more extras than you get buying Parts 1 & 2 on their individual releases. Similar to how I wish I'd just bought the Alien set even if I skipped the last two. Tons of extras with the set that you don't get buying 1 & 2 by themselves.

    Young Justice

    by DavidBanner

I'm not a fan of spin-off characters = the junior heroes. Lass,Lad, boy, girl, etc. This show is well done, but it always whenever Batman, Supes, Tornado, Black Canary, etc show up; I want the show to be about them. And nothing ticked me off more about this show more than when a teenage Zatanna came one. She's an adult. That's the one I want to see.

    Godfather 2 - overated

    by DavidBanner

Yeah I said it. Look I'll never direct a movie. Coppola is super talented. But that movie spends so much time telling a story and dealing with themes that were already covered in the first movie. The Godfather (1st one) is a masterpiece. No Brando. No movie.

  • February 21, 2012 4:45 PM CST

    by skycrapper

DVD for $30. The alt covers are included.

  • I suppose this version by Tom Fontana didn't get so much play because it was overshadowed by the Jeremy Irons version. That is utter foolishness. The Showtime version is trivial, basically a soap opera with nice costumes. Fontana's version is gritty, nuanced, better acted, written, and directed, and just flat out a better story with more interesting characters and larger themes on its mind. There is a real depth to the political analysis in Fontana's version, a showing of man the political animal at his most cunning, hypocritical, paradoxical, and brutal. It's truly epic stuff. I would compare it justly to HBO's Rome. It brings alive an intensely fascinating period of history in all its glory and terror. It was put on netflix streaming so I got a chance to check it out, but it seems like nobody in the states has heard of it. Real bummer. I think taken as a whole artistic work Borgia was the most compelling thing I saw last year and believe me I saw everything. Bad sign for the overall state of film appreciation in America if you ask me.

I really enjoyed season 7 of Weeds.

    by Jaka

I'm not sure what people wanted from it exactly, because it totally worked for me. In fact, from my point of view, something needed to change after six seasons of largely the same story. Plus, it had a great arc and a GREAT ending. I don't believe there would have been a season eight if they hadn't gone with that ending for season seven.

    Weeds

    by Killdozers Evil Twin Brother

I think they had to skip forward three years because Shane doesn't look like a 14 year old anymore. I highly doubt it's because Kohan was "bored" or whatever...sometimes you just gotta roll with things you can't control.
