‘No Peace Without Sacrifice!!’ Some Critics Appraise DirecTV’s ‘Fuck’-Enhanced DAMAGES!!

I am – Hercules!!

FX’s “Damages” migrates tonight to DirecTV’s more permissive channel 101.

I understand John Goodman (“Treme”) and Dylan Baker (the “Spider-Man” movies) join the cast this fourth season as employees of a Blackwater-like private security firm.

I wasn’t able to track down in time whomever handles DirecTV’s screeners, so no review from me.

AOL says:

… 'Damages' isn't on the level of 'The Sopranos,' but, like Ellen Parsons, it knows what it's about these days. And if you want to see some prime, grade-A Acting, well, you could do a lot worse. …

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says:

… Returning fans will get a kick out of some of the stories, particularly a plot involving Patty, court-mandated therapy and her condo's doorman. As has always been the case, "Damages" remains a mystery-thriller whose characters and their psychological quirks are more intriguing than the plot. It's fun to watch how Ellen has learned from Patty and to see the wheels turning in Patty's head.

Variety says:

… To its credit, "Damages" remains the kind of show that demands genuine attention; there's no reading the newspaper or scribbling crosswords while watching it. Moreover, Goodman, Close and Baker are the kind of fine actors that a certain class of viewer would happily watch read the phone book.

10 p.m. Wednesday. DirecTV 101.

    New Damages tonight?

    by Rhuragh

Fuck yes. I'd forgotten about this. At least I have something really good to watch now. Right now it's down to Damage, True Blood (trashy good fun), and Torchwood (which I still haven't watched yet).

Seasons 2 & 3 were good, but season 1 was PERFECT television

    by Rebel Scumb

It even works as just a single season miniseries, wraps up in a wholly satisfying way. I'll continue to watch, but season 1 was the only one I felt the need to buy on blu-ray. Rose Byrne is gorgeous, but she would look a lot better if she gained 10 lbs.

101 is The Audience Network now.

    by Shermdawg

Also, those promos, which air during EVERY SINGLE COMMERCIAL BREAK on Directv are some of the most annoying ads I've ever seen. Horrible song.

    Great show

    by NoHubris

The acting from Glenn Close and Rose Byrne is among their best.

My favorite season is when they take on the Bernie Madoff-esque character.

So it's not on FX anymore?

    by Nick

    Confused.

  • July 14, 2011 12:57 AM CST

FX canceled it, Directv saved it.

    Will it keep up?

    by JonJonB9

Season 1 was awesome and Season 2 was awesomely poor. But then it did something very few shows ever manage, which was to pull itself back up onto it's feet. Third season was almost on par with the first, I've almost never seen a TV show so good go so bad then return to form. Usually they just keep getting worse and die a quick death. But will they keep it up for S4? I'll be watching to find out. Also Rose Byrne is so hot it hurts. Obviously this casting was necessary to balance out that startling jump of "oh SHIT ew" whenever Glenn Close comes on the screen.

    Damages Season 2

by In Action Man Reborn Requiem

Rumor is that William Hurt fucked that one up. His character was supposed to do certain things and Hurt refused to play him that way so the producers had to do a mad scramble and rewrite.

    Damages 2

Was the best season. It's apparently too complicated to understand for chimpanzees.

Season 2 was utter convoluted shit. Hurl all the insults you want it won't change the facts.

    S2

    by Truxton Spangler

Whether it was intentional, or damage control, S2 got itself into a quagmire it couldn't entirely extract itself from. The characters played by Van Peebles and the producer didn't do it any favors either. S3 somewhat redeemed itself with Martin Short, Campbell Scott, and Cariou's Madoff character. It also never hurts to see Madchen Amick onscreen. Too bad about Shayes, though.

    Damages

    by NudeandAroused

Ok, I don't have satellite, but I saw all three seasons on FX. I do have a question, knowing full well that Patty had her fiancee killed and tried to kill her, why would Ellen continue to go to her (patty) for advice and guidance?

  • July 16, 2011 10:08 AM CST

    Why?

    by Extr3m1st

Because if she didn't there would be no show...

    1st episode

    by Extr3m1st

was pretty decent, if not a bit slow. I would assume it will pick up but the show still has great writing and this season should be no different. Feels a bit wierd with out Tom being on Pattys staff though.

nudeandaroused Patty didn't have Ellen's fiancee killed

    by Xen11

Frobisher had David killed, because Ellen was supposed to be murdered but it was only David at home. Ellen was saying how she regretted what they did (her and Patty) by covering up a murder and other things, and Patty took that as she was going to cave and blow the whistle on everything which would lose them the case and Patty would no longer be able to help people. So she had Ellen stay at her cabin and sent someone to kill her. That's what Patty's all about: helping those who cannot defend themselves. Patty believes in the greater good, even at the cost of her own daughter's life and Ellen's (who she sees as her daughter that never lived). Ellen feels the same way as Patty does. They both believe in doing this, something greater than themselves. That's why Season 2 was the pinnacle of the emotional arc between Ellen and Patty: it was all about this intimacy between them and how they are the same, yet different. Ellen spent the entire season struggling with this issue of revenge vs. moving on (forgiveness). That moment at the end where Ellen finally gets Patty right where she wants her to get her revenge, in the midst of Patty and Ellen about to take down something extremely evil (what they truly live for) is the best moment of the series. Ellen gets Patty to the point where she is like a fragile bird in her hands, that can be killed with the slightest pressure. Ellen wants Patty to confess to what she did. And Patty (Close in a perfect moment) comes clean to Ellen, while hiding the fact that she is literally already dying at that moment (the stab wound from the guy in the elevator). I can relate to the relationship of a teacher and mentor that kinda hate each other but totally respect each other in what they believe, their profession/job they share in life. I get it. Ellen wants to know everything she can from Patty. She wants Patty to live, despite what she did, because Ellen knows that its for the greater good and Patty has a lot more good to do, even if the methods are unsavory. Ellen and Patty are now like two sly cats that are working together to help others and stop the greatest bullies of all. They haven't forgotten about what happened. It's still very much there deep beneath the snow, but time will pass and that snow will melt, bringing back to the surface what was once buried. When the work is done that they have to do together (when Patty teaches Ellen everything she knows), the question will be: Will Ellen become Patty and have her killed if Patty ever becomes a liability? Will Patty welcome it as a redemption from the guilt she carries with her after killing her own daughter(s)? Ellen needs Patty to ensure justice is brought to Frobisher for her fiancee's death. Then we shall see if Ellen has truly forgiven Patty for her attempted murder.

    No kidding

    by Truxton Spangler

Finally got time to watch this, and no kidding about the "fuck" enhanced part. I only expected one or two, but they didn't hold back. Maybe now Rose Byrne could get naked as well?

  • July 18, 2011 2:03 AM CST

    Love this show!

    by JacksParasites

Season 1 was one of the best seasons of any television show ever. Season 2 was definitely much weaker though had some redeeming moments. Mostly it was the A-story that was weak because the conspiracy became overly convoluted and implausible. Also, unlike Danson's very human villain in season 1, the main villain in season 2 was too evil. Then season 3 got good again, not quite as good as season 1, but not far off. And already Season 4 is shaping up to be a strong season.

    xen11 agree about s2

    by BandysTract

the overarching case wasn't as good in s1, but I always feel like I'm missing something when i hear everyone that just hates that season, because I still really appreciate s2's Ellen/Patty arc. As well as the student/mentor relationship I think this show pulls off a messed-up yet honest mother-daughter relationship that definitely has its peak in s2. From that near-final scene in the hotel room to all of Ellen's other schemes against Patty (revealing her husband's infidelity etc), they strike on a really intense and interesting mix of simultaneous cruelty and codependency. s3 on the other hand had an objectively better case but I felt like I was waiting for more payoff following the end of s2 between ellen and patty. And sadly I still have to catch up with the s4 premiere
