The BRAVE Teaser!

Nordling here.

If you caught CARS 2 this weekend, you may have seen this, but for those who sat this Pixar release out, here it is in full glory.  I love it.  I love everything about it.  I think if this imagery is what we're getting next year, this will be a unique film from the studio.  I especially love the look of the forest - almost primeval in how it's portrayed - and I can't wait to see this one next June.  There's a lot of firsts in this one - co-directed by a woman (although she didn't see through the entire production), first girl main character, and from what I've heard of the scale of the film, this is only a mere hint at the epic story that is to come.  Here's the teaser:

BRAVE opens June, 2012.  Nordling, out.

Simple story: Girl sets out to kill bear. Then girl kills bear.

    by Gerry Manderin

Sounds like great material for a short film, but, hey, a gimmick sells tickets. And $5 billion in merchandise. A girl in the lead of a Pixar film is nothing but a gimmick. Don't let the crybaby manchildren tell you otherwise. Pad out the run time, give the girl some more gender stereotype-defying goals to accomplish, have her bristle at the traditions of her elders, etc. etc. etc. MULAN + HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON = Instant Pixar classic. Yawn.

    by v3d

Anyone remember PIXAR Typestry from the early 1990's? It was a 3D text animator and renderer. They released a second version as well as Glimpse a program to edit the "looks", the pre-set render options. I still fire it up occasionally.

  • June 27, 2011 12:13 PM CST

I would like to know more.

    by blackwood

Interested. Trailer was pretty, brief and shallow. Moon-pie face girl was momentarily distracting, but after 20 seconds I stopped caring. I think that stories about women and girls need to be more about their stories and less about gender-defying acts of womanity. It's like, the worth of a woman should not be defined by how much she can 'act like a man'. If subs is right, then it will be kind of bullshit. It does seem like they are chasing a certain DRAGON. I wonder if this will be Pixar's first reactionary film -- girl focused as a response to their male-centric stories; fantasy and Scottish-ish as a response to HTTYD being amazing. Maybe I'm just being too cynical about Pixar. I hope it's great.

    by StarWarsRedux

But seriously, though. I'm not sold on the movie, because of how the original director was ousted. Makes me take Pixar less seriously as a house of creativity and artists, more as just another studio-commodity.

back in the movie was called the Bear and Bow. Doesn't look expressly unique or intriguing, but I like Pixar, so of course I'll be there (even though I'm wholly skipping Cars 2). And I don't know if we can talk about this being "co-directed" by a woman, she's basically getting a director's credit out of courtesy or perhaps guild rules, but from interviews with her it sounds like she was essentially fired.

Probably not a Train Your Dragon rip-off

    by lochkray

Pixar movies typically take several years of production, not to mention the pre-production stage, How to Train Your Dragon came out last year, so it is highly unlikely that this movie has anything to do with ripping off that particular Dreamworks title. Look, I saw Cars 2 and wasn't overly impressed, but this is Pixar we're talking about. They're still the cutting edge, and not likely to resort to apeing anybody just yet.

  • June 27, 2011 12:41 PM CST

Lead girl design needs to change FAST!!

    by performingmonkey

Yeah, you've gotta dig the red hair, but her face...definitely needs some alterations. Come on, Pixar, get this right! They've done perfectly good human female character designs in the past so....what gives?

  • I'm sure it will be nice to look at but I'm not very excited that three of the four characters they've teased so far are all women, and the one guy is supposed to be voiced by Craig Ferguson meaning he's probably going to be an irredeemable doofus. The day Pixar gives me a Simpsonsesque family of intelligent hardworking women and useless dimwitted men is the day I buy my last ticket to one of their movies. MIND YOU, I'm not automatically against female protagonists at all, just the super-duper-girl-power-men-suck angle that gets taken so frequently by lazy writers (everything from Simpsons to Home Improvement to Powerpuff Girls blah blah blah, the same shit has been coming down the pipeline since Wonder Woman if not earlier)

It might be a good movie, but the "look" is nothing special.

    by Royston Lodge

It doesn't "look" any more advanced than any other CGI movie of late. That being said, this is Pixar, so I assume the writing is top-notch.

  • Like Andrew Stanton and Mark Andrews (JOHN CARTER) and Brad Bird (MI-4:GP), I see PIXAR heading towards a full-on drama, or perhaps stepping in to create specific characters for live action integration. Not like WETA with AVATAR or LOTR's Gollum, but actually scripting and directing 'serious' projects and bringing digital direction to a new level. Starwarsredux's comment on the Ghibli influence on the BRAVE teaser is appropriate. I downloaded the CARS 2 clips from Yahoo and they weren't very interesting, but I may check it out in LIEMAX 3D since I missed the original CARS in theaters.

    by blackwood

Right on, brother gamers. I can see it -- except Ueda said something about girls climbing being unrealistic, or some such, when asked why the lead in Last Guardian was a little boy. Ooooo - found this interview about the Shadow of the Colossus film: http://playtilldoomsday.com/2010/09/21/kevin-chang-sotc-movie/ Last year, but the most recent I could find. Also Ghibli. Pixar is crazy in love with/respectfully jealous of Ghibli, so the idea of them doing a Ghibli film makes me feel pretty happy. Also, most Ghibli movies feature a girl as the protagonist, and very rarely ever get bogged down in a tired representation of 'woman power' -- the characters are women, and powerful, and they don't need to belabour a point when the story tells the, you know, story. I got NAUSSICA on Blu not too long ago. So great. I hope they do MONONOKE next. Blarg. I think I dropped the plot. But now I want to play Shadow and watch Miyazaki films, so I'm in, like, a good place.

I too have always wondered what a Pixar movie aimed squarely at adults would be like, but it ain't gonna happen. They know that all four quadrants butter their bread and will never give that up, especially with Disney at the helm. As long as their perspective continues to mature and the characters pander less and less, I don't care. It seems to be working that way (except for blatant cash-grabs like Cars 2).

The quote IS slightly different though. But I repeated it here simply because there's a more robust comments section on AICN, which is pretty much all this inferior site is still go for. I used that moniker right here in river city for many a years until I was banned for no good reason, so now I have to use a different name, big deal. D.Vader knows all about it, he got banned shortly at the same time for getting my back. But I apparently didn'thave the juice to be reinstated like D.Vader did. Nor did I really care enough to give the old collage try. Anyway you act like you uncovered a sinister plot or something. Relax, what are trying to do, alert my old nemeses? Seriously no one cares, plus there's nothing lower than a rat (I'm kidding). Anyway I was hoping someone might read that and agree and say; "dude yeah, you nailed it, that's exactly what surged through my brain too, "Thermasilk"! But instead I get a guy who first of all fibs when he's declares I posted two identiacal post when in fact they're mearly similar and second of all doesn't comment on the truth of my sentiment. This 60 seconds is beautiful

    by dukeroberts

I will be there opening weekend. I saw Cars 2 today and it wasn't nearly as bad as people are saying. If you compare it to other Pixar stuff you might be disappointed in it, but as an individual film, I think it was fine. A lttle too much Mater and a little too much potty humor for my taste, but not a bad movie. I did not see this teaser though. And I was expecting to. I thought the Toy Story short before the movie was cute, but it was not as good, clever or funny as most of their other shorts.

    Scottish bears don't exist

    by Jon

That's why she killed the damn thing on sight; she knew it was an invasive species threatening the habitat of indigenous blue glowy things.

"Cats don't type on computers." Seems like a strange bone to pick on a thread where Winona Ryder's pussy juice, Judge Dredd's undies, and Natalie Portman's yummy afterbirth have all stopped to offer their thoughts (nothing at all against those respective posters). This is like Nordling wondering where Cars ice cream comes from. You're on the interwebs, dude. Just roll with it.

Brown bears were once native to the UK.

    by Happyfat73

They became extinct around the 10th century... probably because of little red-haired girls with bows.

  • Lassater wants to be him and it looks like this is the movie to try and do just that. At least from the teaser.

this is Scottish Celt/paganism. Makes you wish we hadn't wiped out all our large predators here in the UK. *sigh*.

    Totally agree about Mononoke

    by Astrosquall

being similar, as that's the first film that came to mind when I saw the trailer. But that sounds like a great concept to me.

    WALL·E is hardly original

    by Dennis_Moore

WALL·E -- Most people said Short Circuit, but I'll go slightly obscure for ya: "For a Breath I Tarry' by the great fantasy author Roger Zelazny. Also, the humans in the story remind me of Mojo from X-Men, and the Mad Magazine short bit called "Blobs" (though that was probably homage).

    **What some might consider Spoilerish**

    by TheDrow

A plot synopsis I found. Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In Brave, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late. Sounds like normal fairytale fair, which done by Pixar should at least be beautiful. I don't consider the female lead to be anything worth getting excited about either way. I do wish they'd gone with a different face though, as the rest of the world looks so very real it seems like the characters themselves may be the most jarring thing about it. Sooooo from what we know now? Pretty, likely worth seeing, but nothing to get excited about yet.

  • that also didnt have a stupid big headed ginger main character little girl

Just what I needed to wash the taste of Cars 2 out of my mouth (Pixar's first and hopefully only sell-out movie).

    by zach hill

Anyone seen this? This looks very much like it, down to the red headed girl and the mystic circle of stones (granted, both are pretty irish/scottish in nature any way). Looks good, either way.
