'It’s Done Already!!' Monday Brings Fox's Last CHICAGO CODE Ever!! Watch It, You Swine!!

I am – Hercules!!

Hi. I think “The Chicago Code” is awesome.

Fox’s best hourlong outside of “Fringe” as far as I’m concerned.

Also?

Highly cancelled. Won’t be back next fall, or ever. Blows.

It comes from Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”) and Tim Minear (“Firefly”), who earlier collaborated on FX’s “Terriers” (awesome!) and The WB’s “Angel” (awesome!) It stars that guy from “Brotherhood” (awesome!) and the girl from “Flashdance” (super-awesome!).

I’ve been watching secretly but making little noise about it for three reasons:

1) Everybody in talkback said “Code” sucks. (Wrong!)
2) Nobody is watching it. (Idiots!)
3) Fox only sent me three of the 13 episodes to review. (Short-sighted!)

In any event. Tonight brings the series finale. Delroy Lindo, who plays the piece’s powerful and corrupt Chicago politician, is now fully aware that the Brotherhood guy and the Flashdannce girl want to punish him severely.

Only three days remain in the season. Everything’s winding down. I invite you to watch the last episode of a wonderful show I highly recommended 13 episodes ago.

9 p.m. Monday. Fox.

    It feels like yesterday...

    by AndoSoundsLikeAMong

I was saying this for Terriers. Great series, had potential, let's hope there's at least some closure in the final ep.

  • May 23, 2011 4:45 AM CST

    Chicago Code was awesome. FACT!

    by Vin

I remember reading your intial recommendation. watched it and loved it. Oh man its Terriers all over again!!!!!

canceling Chicago Code was a crime...

    by DellsDontBounce

We watched every episode - some twice - and we constantly blown away by how completely it sucked us in. Alderman Gibbons was one of the best, most complex bad guys on television. I only hope that the show ends with some sort of resolution.

    Such a shame

    by CCon99

Chicago Code was easily the best new show this year, I really can't believe they didn't give this show a little longer to gain a following (well yeah it's FOX, I guess I can believe it). It was so refreshing to have a show that actually felt like a real cop show for a change. It was also refreshing to have a setting that wasn't LA or NY.

Loved the Shield - Loved this Show

    by Rex Carsalot

    Jenny was really miscast. Sorry.

  • May 23, 2011 6:32 AM CST

The Chicago Code wasn't quite as great as Terriers

    by newc0253

but it was still great, and i will miss it.

    Childs - don't be a moron.

    by Executor

What I assume Herc meant by the review comment, is that if there were more episodes to review, then Herc would be able to post something besides "Chicago Code Airs Tonight!!!". He could actually give a mini-review and inviso-text spoilers and create an actual article like he does when there is a show to review. And give a more informed opinion of the show before it airs, since that is what this website mainly does (as opposed to other websites that specialize in next-day post-mortems.) On that subject, I don't know why more studios dont send screeners for out for their bubble and struggling shows. Not like they can take that much of hit in the ratings due to pirating when they're already struggling. And maybe it might help having journalists and reviewers champion the shows more from the beginning instead of when it gets to the April-May decision months when it's too late.

Granted, it's no SNL with Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga

    by Aquatarkusman

I mean, it only has award-winning actors, world-beating showrunners, and looks to credibly take up some of the territory left by the departure of The Wire, but hey... I just we can mention that only when dirt's being shoveled on the corpse.

    Loved The Chicago Code

    by Captain_Ridley

Enjoyed the hell out of it, but when it didn't catch immediately we all knew it was doomed. It's sickening when great shows like this have no chance of building a reputation. Still pining for my beloved Terriers. I still hope in my heart of hearts that they could continue the show by relaunching it with a different title once Britt is released following his two-year jail sentence.

    I call bullshit

    by Truxton Spangler

There have been those here who have been saying good things about CC, despite the scant attention this site has devoted to it. Like Terriers, it found and settled into a groove, only to be cancelled by the increasingly bean-conscious execs at their respective networks, who used to protect and nurture art over commerce. To read that a series like Damages wouldn't have been greenlit in today's climate is disheartening.

  • May 23, 2011 8:53 AM CST

Advertised as "from the creators of The Shield"

    by SisterSpooky

"And the The Wire" then it couldn't make it to a full season only to be cancelled. I mean why bother advertising the show like that only to not support it, is beyond me.

Chicago Code, Lie to Me, Human Target

    by percane

2011 is the year Fox betrays its fans imo.

    Chicago Code

Is awesome. Can't believe they canceled it. Seriously, I'm totally blown away. http://oscarandozcar.com/

    Human Target

    by Killaarmy

Also amazing. No reason to let that one go either.

  • May 23, 2011 10:00 AM CST

LAST show I'll ever invest in that is on Fox...FUCK YOU FOX!!!

    by david_boreanez_cunt_hairz

    Cihcago Code was really good.

  • May 23, 2011 10:35 AM CST

    Chicago Code IS good!

    by Outrider304

No argument from me Herc. The show is well written, well acted, and has excellent production value for television. It's been a great boost to the local Chicago economy and really puts the best of the city on display. It's even got a catchy intro from Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan. It's too bad this show hasn't found a more consistent audience. If it was an FX show, it's ratings would be considered solid, but it likely wouldn't have the same budget it does either. I'm still holding out hope TNT or some other network will recognize the value here and work on building it's audience. This should have been a new fall show and not a mid season replacement.

Delroy Lindo was brilliant but the rest of the show was terrible

    by The Funketeer

It might have been better if it didn't feel the need to constantly remind the viewer that it took place in Chicago. Also, it was clearly an L.A. executives idea of what Chicago is like. This doesn't even compare to brilliance that was Terriers.

  • May 23, 2011 2:28 PM CST

    Also loved Chicago Code

    by YO MOM'S GOAT

Brother told me this weekend that it was cancelled and I called BS. No way THIS show was canceled. It was the best show on the entire network! Alas. He was right. Call me... YO MOM'S DISAPPOINTED GOAT.

    No

    by Ricanstructor

The Code was the SHIT!!! A lot of my shows are after 1 season!

  • May 23, 2011 6:52 PM CST

I'm done watching new shows... What is the point?

    by Andrew Coleman

I love this show, was loving where it was going then Fox cancels it. Why? So they can have two hours of American Idol followed by the X Factor? It blows me away that garbage like Two and a Half Men get like 9 seasons then after losing their star they keep going. Yet great shows like this get canceled. They need to fix Nielson ratings system. It's frankly bull shit that some old fuck in Missiouri counts for like 10,000 people. If the system wasn't fucked up a lot of good shows would still be on the air. So I'm done with new programming. Not going to get sucked into something then have it be dropped. Thanks Fox you got rid of all your good shows so now I barely have to watch your horrible programming.

    Loved The Shield, Loved Terriers

    by Bass Ackwards

But only ended up liking Chicago Code, I'm sure I would have grown to love it, but it wasn't the instant hit for me that The Shield or Terriers was. Still a bummer to see it canned, but I hope we see another project from these guys collaborating (Minear and Ryan), they seem to make angood team.

  • May 23, 2011 7:56 PM CST

    Family Guy take...

    by cripeman

Wysocki: Everybody I've got bad news. We've been cancelled. Colvin: Oh no Jarek! How could they do that? Wysocki: Well unfortuantely Theresa, there's just no more room on the schedule. We just gotta accept the fact that FOX has to make room for terrific shows like Dark Angel, Titus, Undeclared, Action, That 80's Show, Wonder Falls, Fast Lane, Andy Richter Controls The Universe, Skin, Girl's Club, Cracking Up, The Pitts, Firefly, Get Real, Freaky Links, Wanda At Large, Costello, The Lone Gunman, A Minute with Stan Hooper, Normal Ohio, Pasadena, Harsh Realm, Keen Eddy, The Street, American Embassy, Cedric The Entertainer, The Tick, Louie, And Greg The Bunny.... Colvin: Is there no hope? Wysocki: Well I suppose if ALL those shows go down the tubes we might have a shot.

  • May 23, 2011 8:19 PM CST

It's too bad. The show was coming together nicely.

    by bravogolfhotel

"Coming together" being the operative term, as the shape of the show was hard to come to grips with (the first few episodes were aired wildly out of production order, partly because Ryan came to the decision late in the day that he needed more world-building episodes to insert earlier in the run). The environmental tolerances for how long a show has to establish itself seem to be narrowing all the time, and it may just be that CODE needed to spend more time in development so it could have been fully-formed from the beginning. Still, at least Delroy Lindo will be free to go to Broadway with his one-man extravaganza STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE!

  • I've been hearing ads for tonight's ep on the radio and they keep mentioning, "season finale". WTF? Can anyone please explain to me why Fox is telling viewers this?

  • May 23, 2011 9:01 PM CST

Reminded me of Milch's Big Apple

    by mjgtexas

Well made and acted...but recycling scripts from his past superior cop show.

  • May 23, 2011 11:58 PM CST

    Thanks, Herc...

    by James Donnelly

for championing a show that must just have been either too smart or too provincial for most Fox viewers. Or both. Being a Chicagoan but living in another part of the country, part of the joy of watching this show every week was seeing the neighborhoods I used to hang in.

  • May 24, 2011 12:03 AM CST

    Poor Shawn and Poor Tim

    by James Donnelly

Shawn Ryan has been fucked twice by Fox: TERRIERS and now TCC. But Tim Minear should never put his name on anything again, because it just ends up getting fucked. Which is certainly not to say that Minear is bad. He's fucking brilliant. But maybe he should consider changing his name... After FIREFLY, WONDERFALLS, DOLLHOUSE, the woefully underrated DRIVE, the woefully underrated THE INSIDE, and both the aforementioned shows with Shawn... poor guy just can't catch a fucking break.

  • May 24, 2011 12:24 AM CST

According to Shawn, it might be saved...

    by James Donnelly

http://www.netflix.com/ContactPR Write them to save it!

  • May 24, 2011 3:58 AM CST

    It was pretty horrible

    by Nabster

It deserved to be canceled. And don't you dare compare it to terriers, that's ridiculous.

  • May 24, 2011 8:29 AM CST

    The finale was OK

    by Truxton Spangler

But the most common question had to be -- why wasn't Killian wearing a vest during his perp walk? Some of the other plot points were a bit hollow and convenient, but they did serve to tie all the threads together. The issue with consistency also returned in this episode. Some of the cast, like Lindo, are great, but they only serve to illustrate how bad some of the minor characters are. In one of the early episodes, there was a woman in the crowd at a crime scene whose bad acting completely took you out of the moment. In the finale, Wysocki's dad seemed like he was dropped in from a completely different show, like an SNL caricature. I don't know whether to blame the actor, or the writing, or both. The actor who played him is capable of some subtlety (he also played Conrad Hilton on Mad Men), so the issue probably didn't completely rest on his shoulders. The final result was a (pretty) good show with potential, but some growing pains still to work out. But it's moot now.

  • May 25, 2011 10:00 AM CST

It was no Homicide, Shield or Wire...

    by dj_bollocks

but it was still enjoyable... On a decent cable channel it would have been much better.
