CAPTAIN AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!!!

Hey folks, Harry here...  I've been mildly to aggressively obsessive about the latest CAPTAIN AMERICA trailer.   It is just amongst my favorite things right now.   Watching the Howling Commandos with Cap is driving my comic geek brain into a frenzy of drool.   Like the shot of them on that snowy cliff, overlooking what I think is a railroad and evil lair...    or when Steve Rogers looks up from the body of...  or just every single time I see Dum Dum Dugan!!!   Seriously - there's shit in that trailer that I literally never thought I'd ever see.   I HATE....  HATE...  that Jack Kirby isn't alive to see this movie.    I mean, even Chris Evans looks PERFECT!   Not only that, but it is directed by Joe Johnston, who is one of those directors I've always rooted for, because he fucking invented the awesome that only two words can describe:  BOBA FETT.   I mean.   Holy shit.   Anyway - the guy that designed BOBA FETT and directed the fucking ROCKETEER gets to direct the CAPTAIN AMERICA movie set in World War II, featuring the Howling Commandos, The RED SKULL and the goddamn Cosmic Cube?    Seriously.   How great is that feeling?    I mean, earlier today I pinged Paul DIni on chat and asked what he thought of the trailer, he hadn't seen it yet, so I sent the link.   After watching it the second time, his wife made fun of him for crying - and I KNOW THE FEELING!!!   There's shit in that trailer that literally is primal geek DNA stuff that I've yearned to see done right.   And it is right there!   WOW.

Anyways...   the next MASH UP of CAPTAIN AMERICA and TEAM AMERICA has been done - and again - it expresses my inner geek redneck response to watching the CAPTAIN AMERICA trailer.    And does it perfectly.   Here ya go:

have you talked to abuse victims about Sucker Punch?

    by antonphd

i went into the movie thinking it was going to be a beautiful looking but ultimately hollow film. i was surprised to find what i think, as a foster kid who endured a childhood of abuse, is one of the most honest and raw meditations on abuse i've ever seen in a film. this movie had me choking up at the end. i really have to wonder what kind of experiences Snyder has had in his life to have created this. and i certainly understand why Jenna Malone was in this movie. which i could not understand before watching it. after watching it and the heart that the girls put into this movie i have to say that they all got what Snyder was trying to do with this movie. and i know that it probably goes over the heads of most people. something i am actually happy about considering the fact that i honestly think that a lot of this movie won't make sense to anyone who hasn't suffered abuse or at least some kind of major trauma as a child.

    Speaking of Boba Fett...

    by Larry Knowles

Harry, I know that we havn't been on the best of terms lately (for the last 25 years). But... I would really appreciate it if you would return my rocket firing Boba Fett. I was also wondering if you would like to see Captain America with me when it comes out. Maybe just the two of us on opening weekend or something. Please call me. Your brother, Larry

  • March 25, 2011 9:05 PM CST

that was directed at you, Harry

    by antonphd

i get the feeling from you review that you know that there is something more to Sucker Punch than meets the eye. i wonder if that something is not going to resonate with everyone, because you have to have experienced surviving hell to really understand. anyway, just wondering.

    by Larry Knowles

a perfectly wonderful Captain America franchise. I realize that CA has been part of Avengers lore for 5 decades, but I think an Avengers movie will dilute the sincerity of the cinematic venture into the character.

    by Larry Knowles

Next time you bone your woman... Yell out "America, Fuck Yeah" when you launch your rocket inside her. I did that to my lady after the first parody came out several weeks ago. She thought it was pretty funny. Try it for yourself...

  • March 25, 2011 9:22 PM CST

Yes, the cosmic cube is in this

    by rev_skarekroe

And yes, it's an old gag, but it's got some life left.

    That...that NEVER gets old...

    by Jobacca

And damned if I know why. Seriously, that about the 10,000th time someone has made that Captain America/Fuck Yeah joke and it STILL makes me laugh. Especially around the 4th of July(which is when this movie needs to be coming out)

  • March 25, 2011 9:25 PM CST

    Captain America vs. Iron Sheik

    by Larry Knowles

After the movie is released, it would be cool to see Evans don the persona in the WWF ring against such evil opponents as the Iron Sheik.

  • March 25, 2011 9:27 PM CST

4th of July sentiment. Yeah...you're right!

    by Larry Knowles

That makes complete sense! That would be marketing gold right there! Someone missed a HUGE opportunity there.

  • March 25, 2011 9:28 PM CST

If you think an Avengers movie would ruin Cap...

    by kungfuhustler84

You obviously can't imagine how cool it would be to see him uppercutting the Hulk with his shield. I can just see the poster now mimicking Kirby's issue 1 Avengers cover with Cap rushing right at you! They hinted at a super soldier versus Hulk fight in the new Hulk movie, but I'll bet it won't be anything near as cool as what we see in the Avengers movie. I remain optimistic.

  • March 25, 2011 9:30 PM CST

    by D o o d

  • March 25, 2011 9:31 PM CST

Another genius promotional idea...bomb pops at the movie theater!

    by Larry Knowles

How awesome would it be if, with each Captain America movie ticket purchase, you got a coupon for a free Bomb Pop (you know...the red, white and blue popcicles) from the concession stand.

  • March 25, 2011 9:36 PM CST

They need to play up the patriotic marketing for this film.

    by Larry Knowles

The more I think about it...they have a HUGE opportunity here to really play-up the patriotic marketing of this film. Tie it in to 4th of July. Pass out flags. Sell fireworks. What a wonderful, pre-established marketing ploy that would be for this film! DO IT!

    by codecrackx15

Captain America trailer - Still cringe inducing and looking lame. Sorry Harry but it just doesn't look good. http://codecrackx15.wordpress.com/2011/03/25/sucker-punch-5-out-of-5-stars/

  • March 25, 2011 9:45 PM CST

What makes this character great will be absent in an Avenger's movie.

    by Larry Knowles

That's all I'm saying. The WW2 patriotic angle of Captain America is what makes him work. To remove him from that context and stick him in a huge Superhero team-up movie will dilute the character.

  • Putting Captain America in an Avengers movie would be like making a movie about Santa Claus teaming up with the Easter Bunny, Cupid and a Leprechaun. Taking Captain America away from WW2 would be like taking Santa Claus away from Christmas.

  • March 25, 2011 9:52 PM CST

Johnston's Star Wars work was pure genius

    by kevred

Every time I look at those old sketches in the SW and ESB sketchbooks, I'm in awe, every single time. Such staggeringly brilliant craftsmanship, such incredible, ahead-of-its-time imagination and creativity, and still unique and unsurpassed all these years later. I have tremendous respect for the guys' creativity and talent. Here's hoping he knocks this one out of the park.

  • March 25, 2011 10:01 PM CST

Superhero Team-Up stories don't work becuase...

    by Larry Knowles

You're removing the characters from their original contexts that made them successful in the first place. An Avengers movie will be just a pretty looking gimmick. But I will enjoy it never-the-less!

  • March 25, 2011 10:08 PM CST

    Ruined it for me...

    by Horned One

Now I won't be able to enjoy Captain America unless the "Fuck Yeah!" song is in it. I guess I'll just have to wear headphones playing the song over and over during the movie.

  • March 25, 2011 10:23 PM CST

    @ xiaolinlijun

    by Tristan

I agree. Harry can get a little over-emotional over things that are - ultimately - just entertainment and not that important to life. But I disagree with your criticism of his weight. It's what's on the inside that matters, even if it's marshmallow. btw where did you learn pidgin Icelandic? Do you have a girlfriend/boyfriend?

And yeah, it really sucks King Kirby could not be here to see his creation come to life on the big screen. Like I said, it's a great time to be alive. But at the same time it's also a time to be shaking in our mother fucking boots at the thought that our beloved Superman will be treated like a two-bit whore by Zach "Sucker Punch" Snyder. Fuck.

I hope Ridley has that shit locked down tighter than a 16 year old cheerleader.

    by HollywoodHellraiser

Guess the fact that your boy(Jon) was shitcanned by Marvel is the real cause. Still I wonder why you haven't said as much when Marvel seemed to blame Jon for the terrible direction that IM 2 took. If someone was fucking my friend up the ass I would at least intervene and find out what the fuck was going on. Harry you were lapping up IM and on your knees taking all that jizz, but after IM2 and no review? You've been quiet.

    by Jobacca

Are idiots. Do you tools watch Inception every single day? While stroking your cocks and muttering to yourself about how Nolan is "soooo good"? No...of course you dont. Because Inception is fucking boring and a poorly made film. The only reason ANY of his films even seem good is because he uses talented actors or,in the case of Batman, characters you already have an emotional response to. You tools think anything with a Hans Zimmer soundtrack and a cluttered plot full of non-characters is "deep". Pleae-get over yourselves.

One thing missing from the Cap and Thor trailers..

    by Righteous Brother

that I would like to see. Those weird crackling energy dot things that Jack Kirby always used to draw - some of them would look great, especially for the scene when Steve Rogers gets his powers.

  • March 26, 2011 7:16 AM CST

Not looking forward to the inevitable appeasement

    by CreasyBear

scenes, where Cap rolls his eyes at the stars and stripes design they put on the shield, where characters we are to trust point out needlessly that America has done awful things, probably a scene where the Brits tell the Americans how superfluous they are to fighting WW2, blah, blah, blah. You know it's gonna be in there to soften up the "jingoism" tension expected by foreign market ticket-buyers. Fuck that. Captain America is patriotic. Superman is noble. Batman broods. Spider-Man's a geek with a sense of humor. There are some basic elements you just can't be shy about if you're going to even attempt the character.

  • BRING IT ON!!!!!

I was surprised to find what I think, as a child prodigy who endured a childhood of accolades, is one of the most honest and raw meditations on compliments I've ever seen in a film. I went into the movie thinking it was going to be a beautiful looking but ultimately hollow film. I know that it probably goes over the heads of most people. I certainly understand why Scott Glenn was in this movie. which i could not understand before watching it. I really have to wonder what kind of experiences Snyder has had in his life to have created this. After watching it and the heart that the girls put into this movie I have to say that they all got what Snyder was trying to do with this movie. This movie had me choking up at the end. Something I am actually happy about considering the fact that I honestly think that a lot of this movie won't make sense to anyone who hasn't suffered adulation or at least some kind of major lauding as a child.

Paramount is releasing both, but they only distribute the Marvel films where as they actually put up money to make those Transformers movies. Hence, even if Transformers 3 wasn't going to be bigger at the box office (and it surely will be, regardless of quality), Paramount gets the most money from that one. So they opted to give TF3 the lucrative July 4th weekend.

    by Bouncy X

gotta say i've never understood how he's become this iconic and loved character who's considered some badass. he has maybe 3mins of screentime in the entire OT where he does nothing but talk and get his ass kicked. how the hell did this all happen? is it just the design that kids loved by then who then grew up or what? of course this is the movie series that has fans who knows the name of characters who have 2 seconds of screentime and are never named so....maybe asking why is pointless but its fun. lol

    by quantize

...it's a film, a depiction of a reality, not hand drawn pictures in a comic..for that to work, characters have to have a little more semblance to human beings with intelligence. To pretend any country is pure as the driven snow in a haze of mindless patriotism is fucking dumb. I hope the character is a fraction more rounded out, that's actually what made Iron Man 1 work.. That doesn't mean being politically correct, but then that's also jumping to as idiotic extreme as expecting the character to be a one dimensional imperialist douchebag.

    Unbreakable and The Matrix

    by lv_426

To me, both of those films truly captured the comic book visual aesthetic and especially nailed the translation to cinema of the pacing and framing of how one actually reads a comic book. Besides Sin City and 300, which kind of cheat in that they copied and pasted the imagery from the books to the screen, The Matrix and Unbreakable feel more authentically comic book-ish compared to any of the Batman, Superman, Iron Man, Spiderman, and X-men films.

jesusquintanacanroll: My top 5 M. Night films

    by lv_426

    1) Unbreakable 2) The Sixth Sense 3) Signs 4) The Village 5) Lady in the Water I actually liked Lady in the Water. Sure it is flawed, but I like it in the same way that some people around these parts like Alien 3 as a flawed but interesting and fascinating film. Just as I don't love Alien 3 like I love Alien and Aliens, I can respect the fact that some do find merit in Fincher's sequel. I would hope that the Shyamalan critics can live with the fact that some people actually like something like Lady in the Water, and that it is okay for those in the minority opinion to feel that way. Signs is almost my 2nd favorite of his, and I was gonna put it at number 2, but compared to The Sixth Sense, it is not as successful in taking the characters to their fullest dramatic potential like The Sixth Sense did so well. The Village gets a bum rap. Definitely an underrated film. Looking at the deleted scenes on the DVD, I think Night cut out too much. I put it up there with another favorite horror film of mine, The Mist. Both are dark yet thoughtful suspense/horror films that are not for everyone, but pretty damn effective for those that find a way to appreciate them. Actually, The Village and The Mist would make a pretty damn good double feature. The Happening has its moments, but could have been much better. It was a cool idea though. I can't say that it sucks, but I do find it silly in parts while other scenes are really effective. What a strange little film it is. It feels like M. Night was sort of making a pastiche of Signs and disaster films. It felt like he was playing it safe, which, spout whatever negative or derisive remarks you want about The Village of Lady, but at least those two were daring and not trying too hard to pander to the lowest-common-denominator summer movie crowd. I haven't seen The Last Airbender. I suppose I'll have to rent that one soon, along with Devil.

  • March 26, 2011 9:27 PM CST

    braindrain

    by lv_426

You are free to have your own opinion. I was merely getting at the fact that Unbreakable did get a lot of the aesthetics of a comic book right, while a lot of comic book movie adaptations, especially the superhero ones, ignore those visual elements for a more big summer movie spectacle feel.

  • I think they were initially offered Batman after Aronofsky dropped out, but before Nolan came on board. There was that rumor a while back that Warner also offered the Wachowskis the Superman reboot, but I can't remember if that was a hoax of if they declined the project. I have to say, I kinda wish they had decided to tackle a big budget Superman reboot instead of Zack Snyder directing it. I mean, just look at the final one on one burly brawl between Neo and Agent Smith at the end of The Matrix Revolutions. If that doesn't qualify them capable of directing a Superman flick, then no one else on Earth deserves it instead of the Wachowski Brothers. While Speed Racer wasn't up to the quality of the Matrix trilogy or Bound, it was still pretty damn fun and proved they can do crazy colorful visuals just as well as the noir look that they did so well previously. I say they are perfect for Superman.

Do you people know who Joe Simon is?

    by Odkin

You know, it's sad that Jack Kirby is dead but his writing partner, Joe Simon, the actual co-CREATOR of Captain America is still with us at age 90 something and apparently cogent. Why does no one care or have any pride that he is around to see this? Stan Lee of course made huge contributions to the modern iteration of the character, but he is so tied to Marvel legally and monetarily that any statements he makes are going to be pure PR. This is another business deal to him. But for Joe Simon, Cap is his legacy, his one immortal creation. Maybe AICN has taken sides in his suit vs Marvel and wants to keep him out of the spotlight? Anyway, I hope he receives his just "Co-created by" in the credits and gets invited to the premiere.

  • March 26, 2011 9:57 PM CST

What the hell happend with The Happening?

    by lv_426

The best part was the secluded crazy old lady stuff at the end. That old bag seriously creeped me out. Wahlberg talking to the plastic plant was pretty embarrassing. Zoey Deschanel's character was just... off. I don't know how else to put it. John Leguzamo's character had the most charisma, but of course he didn't really get to do anything worthwhile in the film and got killed off early on. The goofy army guy felt too out of place. Like Gomer Pyle in three-quarter retard mode just for pointless comic relief. I remember hearing about this film back when it was called The Green Effect and M. Night was shopping the script around to various studios. First of all, The Green Effect is not the best title in the world, but at least it doesn't sound as dumb and vague as The Happening. I still can't believe they settled on The Happening for the final title. Anyways... when I first heard a summary of the basic premise for The Green Effect a few years ago, I thought it sounded more like The Birds in that the toxin that the plants were emitting made the animals go nuts and attack people. That would have been much better and would have allowed for more interesting things to happen to the characters, whether for death scenes or just putting them in danger to amp up the suspense.

  • March 26, 2011 10:55 PM CST

odkin, you're right about Joe Simon

  • I'm nervous about this movie. FOR THE RECORD THE ROCKETEER WAS A BOX OFFICE FAILURE. It also fucking sucked, the characters are one dimensional and cliche. If Joe Johnston makes this movie with the edginess of how the trailer appears when adding "fuck yeah" than it just might be a hit. Of course he is not going to put that song into the movie. However, if he makes Captain America as edgy and violent as possible on a pg-13 rating than it just might be a hit. Also, he is not exactly a genius when it comes to three dimensional characters revealing LAYERS of emotions. From the Rocketeer to The Wolfman when the female and male star seemed to have a one note of emotions throughout the entire movie.

    JACK KIRBY

    by Henry Fool

I saw Jack Kirby once, when I was fourteen, at a small comic book convention held at a small Hotel Convention Center in Agoura Hills, California back in 1990. He was sitting at a table, not being ignored but not exactly surrounded by people, either. I stared at him with reverence, too shy to go tack to him. I knew who he was but had never read any collections of his works. I didn't talk to him because I couldn't really cite any of his works. Whereas, when I met Carl Macek I had a bunch to say. That was the year he first released Akira into North American Theaters.

I always wanted to read the Marvel Masterworks Editions of those great early comics. But I just didn't have the money. My manga addiction was eating up all my cash at the time (Akira, Outlanders, Appleseed) And when I did buy stuff from the superhero tradition, I was fixated on getting stuff by that was written by Frank Miller, Alan Moore, Mike Baron or Grant Morrison.

  • March 28, 2011 5:22 AM CST

    Jack Kirby, FUCK YEAH!

    by Stalkeye

What's this? you passed on an opportunity to speak to the King of Comics?!? Ouch! You Otakus, I swear.. But seriously, One of my biggest regrets was not running into kirby, as for had it not been for his amazing talents, i would have never been into comics, sci fi and other mediums of 'Geekery". i'm still pissed off at how he was exploited and mistreated at Marvel, but thanks to rob liefield and of course the kirby estate, royalities long overdue,(includes movies, videogames, etc.) no doubt are a coming!! Not only did the man revolutionized the industry, but it (also) was Kirby who introduced the first Black Superhero to the comics during the turbulent era of the 60's. (Yes, his idea not Stan's.) Long live the King, Bitches!!

  • Ouch! for the first time, i actually agree with doctorwho. The man who invented the Devil horns finger salute gets no love on AICN. "Aint it cool" indeed.

    The question still remains: WHY?!?!?

    by ATrue

Captain America is only interesting as a blast-from-the-past, "Well, will you look at that!" style oddity, an icon from a time when there were still Nazis to fight... and women were all supposed to look and act like Donna Reed, and black people were supposed to sit in the back of the bus. Shit, when they tried to revive this character in the FIFTIES it didn't fly so well. Why are we doing this again in the 21st century? It still amazes me that shit like this can get greenlit. This is a truly ridiculous idea in every sense of the word.
