Hey folks, Harry here... BROTHERS BLOOM is amongst my favorite films in recent history. Flat out, I love it. It was in my Top 10 list for last year, as I saw it at FANTASTIC FEST - Yoko and I rewatched it again just 3 days ago - and went at night so we could pay full admission, because this is a film we wish to support whole-heartedly.
BROTHERS BLOOM is doing well in its limited and ever slightly expanding release, but it is still not available in many places across the country. Click Here To See If It Is Playing Near You! It expanded into 25 new theaters nationwide!
If you love "Caper" films. Movies like THE STING, OCEAN'S 11, TOPKAPI, GAMBIT, O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU... etc... You'll most likely love the film like I do. It is stylized, told as a bit of a tall tale about a pair of great Con Artists that happened to be known as THE BROTHERS BLOOM. It was created by Rian Johnson (BRICK) and is a notable departure and further evidence of his talent.
It has often been compared to Wes Anderson films. I agree that one could see it that way, but I'd also argue that this has the heart that I loved in ROYAL TENENBAUMS & RUSHMORE but that I felt wasn't there for LIFE AQUATIC and DARJEELING LIMITED. And if it's a crime to make a smart, quirky, funny, tear inducing bit of original entertainment - please find me more criminals like Rian & Wes. That's good company.
So often here on AICN I see people screaming about the tsunami of remakes and that cry about the like of originality in cinemas. Right now, THE BROTHERS BLOOM is playing. Right now DRAG ME TO HELL is playing. UP is playing. Support these original films, they're pretty damn great!
