SCRUBS Creator To Write/Direct FLETCH Movie For The Weinsteins!!

Merrick here...

The Weinstein Company has signed SCRUBS creator Bill Lawrence to write and direct a big-screen adaptation of Gregory Mcdonald's novel FLETCH WON.

Lawrence wants to cast SCRUBS' Zach Braff as lead Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher, an investigative reporter who assumes multiple identies in order to get the job done.

Two previous FLETCH films were released back in the 1980s -- FLETCH and FLETCH LIVES. Both starred Chevy Chase and were directed by Michael Ritchie. Personally, I thought they were a bit flat (then again, I think all Michael Ritchie movies are flat). But, they seem to have a following, so maybe it was just me.

At one point, Kevin Smith was to write and direct this project. That didn't work out so well -- producers felt his comedy wasn't "right" for this material.
