Early Test Screening of Mike Meyers' "54"

Father Geek here standing in for the Head Geek who is at this time somewhere between Chicago and merry old London at about 40,000 feet. He asked me to file some reports over the next few days while he is getting the lowdown on all things at the L. & S. studios in the British Isles. 1st on my list is a very early screening report of the film "54" starring Mike Meyers. Well fellow geeks I must admit that I too have caught early action from this film and feel that I must agree with Sideshow on most of his points. I was very surprised with Meyers performance, very very tasty. I differ with Sideshow on Selma's role though, I thought she was dead on for her character. The Club should have been the star here, they really missed the boat. The print I saw had alot of Gay activity throughout so I guess I saw a different film from Sideshow. Still, when Harry asked me what I felt about the movie I responded with this 3 word review, "Boogie Nights Wannabe". Enough of me, herrrrrres...Sideshow!

Recently I saw a rough cut of the upcoming 54.

First off let me say that I had no expectations for this flic and had heard no news or gossip about it. . The temp music was still there, as were many insert cards and missing shots. The worst part of all was the voice-over. it was obviously not the voice-over that we'll hear in the finished movie, but even still, it was unbearable to listen to- not only because the guy reading it was horrible, but the dialogue itself was painfully cheesy.

The one thing I was looking forward to was a depiction of the dance club as it was in it's heyday, which is reasonable considering the title. Unfortunately, the club is a minor character, shadowed by the (uninteresting) behavoir of the stars. Not only that, but since the most of the club scenes were shot in Canada, the extras are horrible. No offense to the actors (and non-actors) who were hired to play extras, but none of these people would have been let into Studio 54. They all looked like hicks milling around, looking lost.

As for the performances, I have to give it to Mike Meyers, he's pretty much the only good thing about this whole movie. He plays his role evenly, not giving in to comic impulses, and the result is an interesting engaging character. I can hardly say the same for any of the other actors. Salma Hayek stinks up the screen, as does Neve Campbell, horribly miscast as a high-falutin, glamorous soap star. In the cut I saw, Neve has about ten minutes of screen time, despite the fact that she gets top billing on the publicity posters. As for Ryan Phillipe, all I can say is that the director must have been quite smitten with him, and this movie may have been more appropriately titled "Ryan's Abs". Seriously, the guy is not much of an actor, and once that body of his loses its post-puberty sheen, he's going to be out of work. (I also hated him in "Homegrown", an overlooked film if there ever was one.

Supposedly, the cut I saw was Miramax's watered down version. The director's cut was evidently much more sexually explicit and had some gay sexuality that was axed for a PG_13 rating.

Stay away from "54"!

    'Since?'

    by Brent Mack

I haven't seen the film yet, therefore I can't argue about the acting talent of the extras in '54'. I do take offence, however, to this reviewer's assumption that 'since the club scenes were shot in Canada, the extras are horrible'. I think Canadian actors and Canadians in general deserve an apology for this obviously misinformed and unintelligent comment.

    Canadians

    by Max Castle

As a Canadian, I don't think I need to go through the list of Canadian actors and actresses who don't look like "hicks"... I'll reserve final judgement until I see the film, but I find it hard to believe that the filmmakers chose to have people hanging out at Studio 54 in flannel shirts, touques, and mukluks. I don't know what this guy was looking at, but it sounds like he was projecting the typical Yank misunderstanding of Canada onto what he saw on the screen (whoops, there *I* go generalizing about Americans!) - we live in igloos, eat moose meat for breakfast washed down with a cold beer, etc. I remember an episode of Cheers once where Fraser talked about visiting Nova Scotia for some reason, and being out on the "frozen tundra". I live in New Brunswick, just below NS and I can safely say we have no frozen tundra here. I look out my window and see green grass, not a patch of snow, and the thermometer tells me it's 27 degrees (er, it's Celsius, guys, like MOST of the world uses!) - let's just say it's damn warm here! Anyway, I take umbrage at this guy's assumption that Canadian = hick, but no amount of my ranting here is going to change that. Stereotypes are damn hard to break with wooden-headed people. Still looking forward to the film; always good to see Mike Myers and Neve Campbell (both "hicks" themselves) get work... Cheers, Max C.

    No

    by FutureMan

Hey, Americans. Remember when Canada invaded the U.S. and burned down the whitehouse in 1812?? (probably not, knowing your school system and your country's fondness for distorting history). Well, quit with the Canada bashing or we'll do it again.

    Canadians Sense of Humor

    by Pat Hobby

Please, my friends to the North - if you are trying win us over here in the States to the bevy of fine actors from the Great White North, then you should probably not remind us that Keanu is a Kanuck. Also, Canadians claiming that they burned the White House would be like Kuwaitis telling Saddam that they kicked his ass. It was the British who burned the White House, just like it was the USA that bitch-slapped Iraq. Now, as a Texan, I can understand your frustrationj with people's stereotypes. I would love to discuss it longer but I have to go get drunk, fuck a cow, and then drive around in my pickup truck. Later, eh.

    Nope, Public

    by Pat Hobby

Sorry, to disappoint you, but I went to public school until college. However, I thought I should mention that while the War of 1812 began in 1812, the White House didn't burn until 1814. I could be wrong about this, of course. However, as a Texan, I can assure you that I would never admit it.

I hate to break it to you..

    by Robin Ward

.. but one interesting fact is that Toronto, that huge popular city in Ontario, Canada, is resposnible for creating more movies than just about every single city in the USA! Often I see the precious city of Toronto being represented in US flicks as "New York" or "LA" or something like that. Canada is a hot bead for movie filming. The odds are that some scenes in your favorite movies were filmed in Canada. Something to chew on.. seeing as that beaver has his own grub!

    Studio 54

    by A Boy Named Sue

Alright, I won't wasted time with a Canadian bashing comment (read: K. Reeves acts like a stool in the floating in the toilet), but I will comment on Studio 54. First of all, when did it become "Mike Myer's 54" as the article so states. Myers acted in it, yes, but did he spend over a year of his life, 16 hours a day, or more, making it his baby. No. Call it 54 or Mark Christopher's 54. Second of all, it's registered as an R, if anyone cared to notice, and seeing as it comes out here pretty soon, it will probably stay that way. Making 54 PG-13 would be like making "Larry Flynt" about the other magazines he owned, it just wouldn't be a good story. Second of all, Myers may have, or may not have, put down his comical urges; rather, those comical urges may have been either suppressed by Christopher's directing (yes there are directors who talk to actors these days - although it's not Lucas: close your eyes and ears when Jake Lloyd as Anakin comes on screen) or those were edited out to make a drama. If the Truman Show can be considered a serious drama and satire (?) with Jim Carrey acting like Ace Ventura on Nick at Nite, then Mike Myers can certainly do drama. Just my three cents, seeing as I'm worth more. Rollo Tomossi
