Anime Spotlight: Android Kikaider: The Animation Volume 1

Released by Bandai Entertainment

It may be coincidence, but there seems to be a mini trend in retro-anime in the US recently. It's a little odd considering that the to many anime fans, the referenced material is more known by reputation or vague recollection to what appeared on TV in the 70's and 80's than experience.

Android Kikaider: The Animation is a reincarnation of a live action 70's about guitar carrying man who changes into a bug eyed robot-defender. The new animation examines the life of Jiro, the robot released by the last action of a scientist in hopes that the creation would protect his family. What was a one man Power Ranger show have been revised as something dark and compelling rather than simply grim and gritty.

Kikaider directly references Pinocchio, but given the reaction Jiro receives from the world, it is almost as much Frankenstein. The artificial man learning about humanity is very well trodden ground, but even if Kikaider isn't addressing new metaphysical issues, it is taking some interesting and novel paths to view them.

Jiro is told that he has a conscience, but that it is broken. He's an artifial intelligence that is told that he can't trust his programming. Observationally, he has evidence that these statements are true. On one side are humans that he is told protect, on the others side are robots telling him to destroy. Each side has representatives telling him that he is family who should join them, and representatives telling him that he is a defective outcast. From a logic standpoint alone, it's quite an equation. Because everyone is telling the truth, the "trust no one" mantra doesn't work.

The visual elements of the show combine the 70's uninhibited strangeness with modern fluidity and pop. Like Giant Robo, or other successful revival of the style, it isn't afraid to look a little silly to the modern palette. Lead characters have the caricature look seen in golden age American comics, and to some extent still in Mad Magazine.

Manga Spotlight: Slayers Special: Notorious Written by Hajime Kanzaka Illustrated by Tommy Ohtsuka

Released by CPM Manga

Fiery tempered sorceress Lina Inverse, and her busty, and her less competent sidekick/rival Naga the White Serpent return to fight a host of creatively hideous and or odd people for profit, vanity and ego. Kanzaka Hajime, whose the novels started the Slayers mini-empire turns in some rapid fire comic oddity. Some of it is direct anime re-treads, some is original.

The Slayers anime defined, or at least set the bench mark for swords and sorcery comedy. It is an instance where an anime series spawned a manga adaptation rather than vice-versa. Slayers Special: Notorious is Slayers for fans looking for a little more, original published in 2001, after all of the anime, except the fifth movie Slayers: Premium (which basically amounted to a final "happy now?!" to the fans). It's mild entertainment rather than the giddy affair that the anime could often be.

The problem here is that the manga is aiming at the same humor targets as the anime. Bugs and Daffy don't work flat on a page, neither do Lina and Naga.

Aside from occasionally carrying on jokes that can't work comics, ie Naga's irritating laugh, comics aren't a forgiving medium for slapstick. Maybe an illustrator with a great of skill could make it work, but Tommy Ohtsuka can't. He captures the vibrancy of the anime with attractive character design and comedic use of facial expressions, which makes him a good successor to co-creator Rui Azairumi, but his visual story telling can't keep up with the demands. He's capable, but not enough for the quick movements, and mock dramatic entrances.

The majority of the panels illustrate the characters posing or mugging. While posing is an integral part of the Slayer's humor, when it is used appears to the exclusion of all other postures it weakens the visual flow.

For comics to work, the reader must mentally picture what happens between too panels. Here, the illustration is a skeletal framework that requires mental manipulation on the part of the reader before it because explosive slack stick.

Slayers Special: Notorious is an attractive comic that fans of the series will enjoy, but it fails shooting for a goal it wasn't going to achieve.

Anime Soundtrack Spotlight: Serial Experiments Lain Music by Nakaido "Chabo" Reichi

Released by Pioneer

It is worth noting immediately that the Serial Experiments Lain soundtrack does not have Duvet, the series' popular opening theme by Boa. The song should be in the September release of the Lain Cyberia Mix.

Pioneer's domestic release of the soundtrack very close to the Japanese release apart from a minor tweak to the interior booklet and the absence of "Distant Cry", the closing theme.

Given the cyber-thriller nature of Serial Experiments Lain, it is strange to notice the music's reliance on guitar sounds, which gives the music a human touch. The guitar is sometimes accompanied by more synthesized sound. Sometimes the two complement each other, sometimes they compete. For example, the "Lain Theme" features a duel/interplay between heavy guitar, and a very artificial melody a-la later rendition of the Doctor Who theme.

There's a good range from up beat pulse, to eerie, to low melancholy, with a few songs with real sticking power. The Lain soundtrack isn't one that for those unfamiliar with the series, but most of the music has the strength to stand on its own beyond mood arbitrators in the anime. It holds it own without Duvet.

Anime Spotlight: Rahxephon Orchestration 2: Tonal Pattern

Released by ADV Films

Rahxephon still seems like the cream of the latest group of giant robot anime, but it didn't have the brilliance of the first volume. The interesting characters were presents. As were the cleverness and mind games that made situations more complex than first glance.

Studio Bones (of Cowboy Bebop fame) continued to put out crisp animation, brilliant visual design of the first volume wasn't as in evidence, with far fewer exercising in stunning surreal or military-tech visuals.

Given that the series is more continuous than episodic these episodes seem to a slow build after the radical upheaval after the Matrix-esque twist in the first volume. The setting has stabilized. The large cast only grows a little. It even seems like the gimmick episodes (Christmas, beach trip) have been gotten out the way.

The recently prevalence of 13 episode TV series may have shifted expectations, but the snapshot view of these episodes is an attractive, and mildly engage series rather than the blockbuster promised by the first volume. The episode weren't substantial standalones, and they only marginally added to the greater picture of the series. The parties involved warrant some faith, especially considering Yutaka Izubuchi's work on Gasaraki.

what i don't like about some anime

    by Acne Scarface

what ruins plenty of anime for me is the gratuitous sex and nudity, the "fan service" garbage. there are alot of titles that feature really compelling premises that lose me whenever they have to show some girl taking a shower or a guy "accidently" feels one up. just because some anime are targeted for older audiences doen't necessarily mean u have to include that kind of content. look at hayao miyazaki's work, for example.

  • July 3, 2003 3:25 AM CST

I'd have to tend to agree.

    by McCormic

It was partly due to anime's constant sextual protrails of wemon that I kind of burnt out on the thing. It seems like some kind of rule that wemon. . . and girls, must always be shown in revealing costrums, or forbiding that, spandex. And if they arn't sextual they must always be consurned about love. Love love love. I'm sorry. I just need nueaunce. Problem's with the culture though. Japan hasn't hit Wemon's Lib yet. Not completely.

  • July 3, 2003 9:00 AM CST

    hey McCormic

    by Neojanus

What the hell is a wemon? What's wemon's lib? Jokes aside, I don't agree with what you said. Not all anime girls are in reavealing costumes or short shirts, just most of the popular ones. Check ai yori aoshi, main female character in in a very converative dress.

The Kikaider anime on CN is GREAT, and th efinal ep of the 01 version is tonight. It should be interesting how it plays out. If nothing else, it got me interested enough to get tapes of the live-action Kikaider. Of course, I only got the first few episodes, and the final nine, where they take a much different approach. I'd like to get the 01 series (only the key episodes) later. As for Inuyasha, we're supposed to get new episodes in August. Check toonzone.net to find out when. It's either the fourth of three weeks after that. It depends on when they show "Blue Gender". Finally, Cyborg 009 is the best addition to Toonami in some time. They should move "Justice League" out and put new Dragon Ball in.

    Kikaida Rules!

    by rpalompo

This anime is not only a great blast from the past but it is excellent story telling and a worthy anime. I saw the original live action Kikaida shows as a kid and it is a thrill to see the character revived. And what a revival! The first part is beautiful story telling with great character development and good pacing. The next volume (Kikaida 01) is non-stop action. It reminds me of how Aliens followed Alien, keeping it interesting and cool. All I can say is I hope they make more! Aloha.

    re: Live Action Gundam

    by Urge to Kill

There was a live action Gundam it was caslled G-Saviour and it sucked. It was made back in 1999 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Gundam. All the gundams are CG and look like shit like they were done on an Amiga. Also it was filmed in Vancouver so it stars American and Canadian actors which means it was filmed in English and then dubbed into Japanese. You can still find it at places like Best Buy and Media Play.

    Neojanus. . .

Grrrr. Once again, it was Andrew Jackson who said: "It is a damn poor mind which can think of only one way to spell a word." You know, and I knew I was going to rile up some otaku into saying what you just said, and bringing up some obsure dimond in the rough. (Though in this case, I don't think its was good example. She might be wearing tradisional clothing, but I think she is still being portayed, to a certain extent, as a contanable sex object. http://aiyori.pioneeranimation.com/index2.html If nothing else, we sure do have love love love.) The problem is. . . you're wrong, not to put too fine a point on it, and like most otaku you're kind of deluting yourself on this point. Its a systimic problem with anime. I mean, what about Pokemon, before it exploded, of course. Misty? The cops? Nurse Joy? And I don't even think that show was -intended- to be popular. What about the Black Jack OAV. There we see a school girl so obssed with love she attempts to commit reverce pedofelia. You can see that one in GTO too. . . I mean. . . even if you did have a point, what does it say when all the popular animes are objectifing weomon, and only a hand full of unpopular ones arn't? Problem's with the culture.

First off the whole spelling thing was a joke about how you spelled women wrong more than once. BTW Andrew Jackson grew up illiterate, his wife had to teach him how to read and write. And second yeah you have a good arguement I really can't put up an arguement but truthfully manga and anime artist do these things knowingly. I mean would you buy an anime with ugly men and (even more so) ugly women. Mind you a lot of Shojo (sp) or girls manga written by women have sexy barbie styled girls. THis is because ugly and unattractive doesn't sell (my opinion only). And Aoi's relationship in ai yori aoshi was more deeply into romance than love love. Of course even in this example there is more than enough contrast from the other female characters who are very un women's lib but hey it's only fiction.

Anyone remember that one? ... It was a helluva tv show. It was like Byrne-era X-Men animated. Wonder why it never caught on in the States?

  • Ok, so once again. . . doing this real quick like. Got that my spelling was wrong. . . Am a little senceative. Andrew Jackson was illiterate because of the time he grew up in. Also, I don't think English had yet completly embrassed set spellings. Its not a matter of the characters being ugly, but being potrayed overyly sextually. Its not a matter of being unattractive but being sex objects. I know what shojo means. Its not love love. Its love love love (said like love, love, love but without commas. . .) I know its only fiction. . . but it is symptom of a bigger problem. There are dimonds in the rough. But there is a lot of rough.

and while on the subject of objectifying women...

    by The Killer-Goat

don't forget the old Tenchi series with 6 or 7 babes all chasing one celibate male (title character), exposing themselves in one manner or another, but never getting any for their troubles... If you want to angle the objectification (sp??) at something substantial, try your local high school television ratings. That's where sex sells the most. How about the Stripperella series for an american contrast in animation? Or Ralph Bakshi's works, for pete's sake? It sounds like most of the sore points here are aimed at the displays of 'teen girls' rather than 'adult women'? Especially when Pokemon is tagged for evidence. Try "Agent Aika" for "old-school" gratuitious and intentionally over-the-top fan service. But that's just pointing out an extreme. To be honest, this stance against anime really takes a back seat to some of the Buffy episodes or Charlie's Angels, or even Britney or Christina (all real folks, not animated, with avg PG-13 target audiences). Yeah, it's a culture thing, but I don't see it as a "problem", if compared to the U.S. They just choose to animate it, instead of waiting for someone to volunteer for the real live thing. Unless of course you're defining animation as a 'family-friendly' standard. In which case, best give up making any specific claims with such a generalized observation. There's way too much anime that has very, very little to do with fan service but everything to do with great storytelling: Wolf's Rain, Last Exile, Ghost in the Shell series, Texhnolyze, Noir, yadda yadda to name a few select titles. Agreed on the charges of having to filter through the crud to get to the gold, but hey, our american industry is no less guilty (Paradise Island, anyone?)
