Early Test Screening Review for SHANGHAI KNIGHTS!!!

Hey folks, Harry here... Well, this review is quite exciting, especially for all the disappointed Jackie Chan fans that suffered through TUXEDO. The American Jackie Chan films have been fairly lacking in terms of classic fights. They've been films of moments, but not sequences or wholes. If what is being described below is accurate. If we really do see extended combat.... And the Donnie Yen vs Jackie Chan thing has drool seeping from the purple and pink striped feline grin upon my face. Only time will tell for certain, but for now... sounds exciting. BEWARE OF SPOILERS BELOW!!!!

Here is a review of SHANGHAI KNIGHTS....

Last night I went to the first test screening for SHANGHAI KNIGHTS, the sequel to SHANGHAI NOON, starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson.  It is directed by David Dobkin (Clay Pigeons).  Let me start out by saying I am a huge fan of Jackie.  I own over thirty of his movies and I consider myself to be very knowledgeable of his career.   Adding to that, I have recently become more and more disillusioned because his American movies either suck or aren't as good as they should be.

TUXEDO was a disaster!!!  RUSH HOUR 1 & 2 and SHANGHAI NOON are all about as good as each other.   They are directed okay, they are funny, they have some interesting fights (that are too short).  His American films also don't have ENOUGH fights.  They often try too hard to have a good story, which is hopeless because the plots of these films are not what people go to see.   The story is only meant to allow for innovative fights in interesting settings and silly humor.  That being said, I was really excited to see this film but at the same time very nervous.  After TUXEDO, I was beginning to think that maybe Jackie had lost it....

I don't want to divulge too many plot details but the story involves the "Shanghai Kid" Chon Wang (Chan) going to London to avenge his father's death and to recover the Imperial Seal that was stolen from the Forbidden City.  On the way, Wang stops in New York City to get his gold from Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson) that they earned at the end of the first movie.   Well, as you can see from the previews, O'Bannon joins Wang in his quest to London, where Wang's sister is already there trying to track down the killer.  Donnie Yen plays one villain and an unknown (at least to me) named Aidan Gillen plays the British villain.   They are both good, but not incredible.

THE FIGHTS...

As I said before, I was beginning to think that maybe Jackie had lost it...

Let me assure you that Jackie has NOT lost it.  This is easily his best American movie.  EASILY.  From the opening scene, the way the fight was done I knew it was going to be more like his Hong Kong films (this fight doesn't even have Jackie in it either).   In all of Jackie's American movies, there are only three or four fights.  They are always too short and there really is only one great memorable one.  In SHANGHAI NOON, the only memorable fight was Jackie with the rope & horseshoe versus the cowboys with guns.

In this film, however, there is fighting all over the place and the fights are LONG.  The fight in the marketplace in London is probably the best.  It lasts probably ten minutes (or maybe more) and that is exactly what his American films have always needed.   My jaw kept dropping at Chan's fight and stunt work in this scene, and my jaw hasn't dropped like that since I saw DRUNKEN MASTER II or the rooftop fight at the end of WHO AM I.  Yes, this is Chan's best stuff since DRUNKEN MASTER II.

The fight in New York City in the revolving door between Jackie and the keystone cops is phenomenol.   It is so clever and awesome, I couldn't believe it.  Thank you David Dobkin and Disney for making this more like one of Jackie's Hong Kong films.

There are two other great memorable fights as well that don't quit early like in the RUSH HOURs or SHANGHAI NOON...   The only problem I had was I wish the final fights were a little longer and had Jackie a little stronger.  But the problem of the climactic fight not being as good as the earlier fights in the film" happens a lot in Jackie's earlier pictures, so it doesn't really bother me much.

As for THE COMEDY...

For those of you who are Owen Wilson fans (as I am), you will be happy to know that this is Owen at his absolute funniest.  I don't know how much of it is the script (because Wilson said before shooting that unlike the original, this one has a really funny script) and how much is his improvising, but he is hilarious.   The whole theater was laughing non-stop.  Every single thing he says is hysterical.  I wish I wrote down all his lines when I was watching because he is more quotable in this than ever.  The pillow fight scene = brilliant.  Jackie Chan's comedy in this one, however, is entirely physical.   All the comedy from Chan occurs in his top notch fights.  In the first one, he was funny in the things he said, but here he just creates some of his most memorable goofy fights.  That's why the movie works so well, because Wilson and Chan are each in their own element doing what they do best.

The film does have some interesting supporting characters and some annoying supporting characters.  The script is really clever a lot of the time and then overdoes some of the jokes every once in a while.  It's a little convoluted, but that doesn't matter because the whole point of the story is just to allow great comedy and great fights.   I think by the time this film is done, the overdone jokes and few annoying characters will be fixed (this was the very first test screening of the film).  The music was a little strange at certain times but that is only because it was a temp track.   One of the best parts of the original SHANGHAI NOON was the score by Randy Edelman, and I read online that he is on board to do the music again.  I must also praise the cinematography, costumes, hair styling, and set design in the film.  This was one of the original's strong points and it is even better in this one.

For all of you kung fu fans out there who know the significance of Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan finally being in a movie together, don't get too excited about a huge showdown between the two of them.  For all who don't know, this is probably second best to seeing Jet Li and Chan square off.   Yen does not fight at all until the end of the film, where he does fight Jackie.  The fight is really good, and it doesn't try to make Jackie a better fighter (which is realistic because if they fought in real life, Yen would definitely win).  Jackie is the best filmmaker and is the most talented in terms of acting and comedy and innovative fight choreography, but just in terms of fighting, Yen would beat him.   And in this fight you can see that Yen is better, but Jackie is fighting harder than ever.  The fight is great, but too short for those who were hoping for an extended battle.  I also wish that Yen was the final fight, but of course Jackie had to fight the white guy swordfighter last.

Overall, as I said before, this is Jackie Chan's best American movie easily.  It his is best movie (HK or American) since DRUNKEN MASTER II.  It has Owen Wilson at his comedic best, Chan at his comedic fighting best, and the setting & story for it all are the best Chan has had in a while.   If you liked the first one, you'll love this one.  If you are an Owen Wilson fan, you'll find him funnier than ever.  If you're a Jackie Chan fan, go see this film and be reassured of his brilliant ability to entertain audiences again and again.   This is just a great action comedy.... I recommend seeing it next February.

    Owen Wilson is great...

    by Monkey Lover

He's one of those guys who's hysterically funny even when you're not sure if he's meant to be. He has such great deadpan delivery, he can make ordinary lines sound like jokes with minimal effort. He makes me piss my pants with humourous wee-wee. Like in The Royal Tenenbaums, he made the word "indeed" sound funny. And he was ace in Meet The Parents too as that carpenter bloke. His brother is also funny. I only hope Owen Wilson doesn't become typecast as a white sidekick in buddy movies, like this and I Spy. Hey, ain't that bizarre to see: these days in Hollywood, it's the white guy who plays the comedy sidekick to the ethnic leading man! What a refreshing change.

    Jackie.

    by statto4ever

I liked Jackie's eastern films and I kinda dug Rumble In The Bronx, First Strike etc. But Rush Hour was a complete piece of shit. Jackie was ok, but Chris Tucker sucked all the life out of that film with his own particular brand of 'comedy'. I haven't seen a western Jackie film since, I can't bring myself to watch Shanghai Noon, as much as I like Owen Wilson (and I do, I think he's one of the finest comedic actors working today). Fuck Chris Tucker, fuck him up his unfunny, irritating voiced ass!

Jackie at his funniest physically? Sign me up!

    by vroom socko

While I absolutely love the fight scenes at the end of both Drunken Master II and Armor of the Gods II, my favorite Jackie movie is still City Hunter. Easily the goofiest film ever made, it's worth renting for the Street Fighter scene alone. If Shanghai Knights is even 1/10th as funny as City Hunter, it'll be one hell of a movie.

Do yourself a favor and see SHANGHAI NOON. It's not just a good Jackie Chan movie, it's a good MOVIE. Good story, funny dialogue, and Owen Wilson is a much better foil to play off than Chris Tucker. The bath scene will have you in stitches. I have no idea what it means. But it's funny as hell. It's no RUSH HOUR. The RUSH HOUR movies feel like commercials. SHANGHAI NOON is a solidly entertaining film, and I feel badly that I missed it in the theater. To close..."Help me the vultures are eating my face!"

    Shanghai Noon was good.

When the three Chinese guards have hitched with the wagon train to Carson city, early one morning they're practicing while the locals eat. "Ain't never seen Injuns like that before." "Don't be ignorant, they're not Injuns. They're Jews." Funny script. The Chan/Wilson drinking game is equally priceless. Yeah, I liked it.

I thought that the fight scene at the end of Gorgeous was pretty good and full of energy until the stupid dancing sequence. I do agree that Drunken Master II was an awesome film. Hopefully this film turns out okay.

    by coop

but I actually prefer a movie with plot. I enjoy a good Jackie Chan fight as much as the next guy (the next guy being a non kung fu geek) but contrary to the reviewers opinion, I don't wanna see a film with all fights and no plot. It's like sitting through Baywatch just to see girls in bikinis run in slow motion. I may be looked down upon by the Kung Fu geeks in here, but I prefer Shanghai Noon to Who am I.

    Interesting...very interesting

    by Master T-MACK

Shangai Noon was good and clever, but I was a little nervous with the sequel. I couldn't allow such a deserving sequel to go the way of Men In Black II. Thank God. This is definitly going to rock and finally, a good February comedy. The pairing of Jackie and Owen is a perfect match. Shangai Noon made just 57 mil, because it was released opposite M:I-2. Lets hope Daredevil doesn't kill this movie. And Chris Tucker isn't in it.

    RUSH HOUR

    by gakchat

Speaking as a Chinese, I found the Rush Hour movies to be highly offensive. In particular part two, which shows that Brett Ratner is really ignorant of what life is really like in Hong Kong. He filled the whole movie with Asian stereotypes straight out of a Jean Claude Van Damme movie. Moo Shu-eating/Karaoke-singing/exotic massage parlors filled with prostitutes/Asian drug lords/"Oooh where can I find some Chinese wimmen?" I find it hard to believe that Jackie advocates this kind of film that makes us look like bad Asian stereotypes. Now, I can laugh at my own culture too, but these films made me feel uncomfortable. I agree that Chris Tucker is highly annoying and I don't believe for one minute that Jackie's character would be friends with him. Does anyone know if there is any truth to the rumor that more money was offered to Tucker to return for part 2 than was offered to Jackie? C'mon! People go to see this film for Jackie! Nobody gives a shit about seeing a new Chris Tucker movie! Somebody please give Jackie a chance to make a movie on his own terms without making him team up with some lame American actor! That said, aside from a few minor quibbles (Lucy Liu) I quite enjoyed Shanghai Noon and look forward to part 2.

    by Wesley Snipes

Shanghai Noon was great and really JC's best since DM2. As someone mentioned, what made it great was that it was actually a good film, period. Not just a good Jackie Chan or kung fu film. Hopefully this will recapture the magic while providing even more fighting and laughs.

    Chan's Best

    by Philmaker

Shanghai Noon was by far Jackie's best film. The Butch Cassidy homage was brilliant. Owen Wilson was brilliant. Why this film failed where Rush Hour 1&2 succeeded is beyond me. So glad to see a sequel to a moderately successful film. This is what they did in the 80's with films like RoboCop and Predator and Lethal Weapon.

    Just my opinion

    by Rondo

15 minutes? While I think I could name a few HK peers who are better actors than Chan,he has talent. You're going to drop him just because of one movie? You want to talk about 15 minutes let's get rid of Rob Schneider. Those idiots from the Man Show.ROSEANNE!! And I think it's common knowledge that Jackie got about 5million less than Tucker but he also got a percentage of profits. Speaking of using your time wisely, what the hell is wrong with Chris Tucker? This guy becomes a star from Rush Hour, then does nothing!Rush Hour 2 came and went and he STILL hasn't done anything.Hello?Chris?Ever heard the phrase"Strike while the iron is hot"?

    Jackie Chan + Mad Max

    by turk128

Does anyone remember that Mad Max-ish movie he did with practically all his fellow opera school bros? It had everything in it from a huge Mad Max end battle with a zillion cars, humor, kungfu , and even a bit of ghosts/ zombies. Great movie but can't remeber the damn title, thou. ---------- gakchat: have you seen any of those gang movies in China? They do the same thing Rush Hours do but 10x worst. And there's not one once of funny in any of them.

  • October 29, 2002 6:49 AM CST

    Chinee stereotypes

    by gakchat

turk128: I am not excusing bad humor on either side of the ocean. I do admit that HK has made plenty of pretty bad comedies and portrayed westerners as broad stereotypes too. Having grown up here, those kinds of films make me feel somewhat embarrassed for my culture. I suppose ignorance is international. However, many of those comedies were funny to Chinese people and the jokes could have been lost in the translation or just appealed to a different culture and a different time. Chris Tucker is not funny on either side of the ocean. These films were also a function of the kinds of movies that were made in the 70's-80's. However, in the 2000's I did expect more from a big Hollywood film. To be more respectful of their portrayal of an ethnic group. It was obvious that Brett Ratner and his writer had no knowledge of Chinese culture, or its people, and that everything they know about us, they learned from bad 70's movies. For humor to really work, there needs to be a certain amount of truth to the idea, no matter how outrageous. How much funnier and more interesting would Rush Hour 2 have been if Chris Tucker went to HK with all these preconceived notions of Chinese culture, only to be proven wrong at every turn when confronted with the real Chinese? I wouldn't go so far as to call Brett Ratner racist, but I do feel he is ignorant when it comes to another culture. Hey, Hollywood, it's time to update your preconceived notions of Asians, Indians, Africans, South Americans, and every other ethnic group. You are making films for an international market now, and you are just showing off how little you know of others with the films you are now making. BTW, turk, I have no idea what Mad Max/Jackie film you are talking about...Armour of God, maybe?

Shanghai Noon, much better than either Rush Hour

    by AlwaysRight

It had real wit and a decent cast. Rush Hour was like some direct2video Beverly Hills Cop sequel where they couldn't afford Eddie Murphy anymore. Got to wonder sometimes if Jackie Chan (and Jet Li also) have the best representation, judging by some of the dreck they end up in.

What ever happened to Yuen Biao?

    by Heffaloo

I always thought he was awesome. He wasn't quite as funny as Jackie, but he was better at the acrobatics. Besides, you have to love a guy who flips off of a multi-story burning building, lands on his feet and delivers his line on cue. And what about Sammo? Why hasn't MiraHACKS torn the shit out of Magnificient Butcher yet? THAT'S a movie that needs a domestic release. And Prodigal Son. And some of that weird shit with Anthony Wong. BTW: My favorite Jackie Movie is Dragons Forever.

    Jackie's sidekicks

    by turk128

gakchat: I don't mind Tucker as long as Jackie's there to play off him (there is chemistry between them, no matter how much people hate Tucker's part in it). I'm not trying to defend Ratner, but I think he was going for the Denny's crowd with RH :) Yeah, RH would have been much better if they had played off the stereo- types but that type of humor is a little bit more subtle, they were going for the loud-in-your-face type. That said, Ratner lucked out when he got hired for RH cause he is far from a good director (and he stinks at action).----- No, the MadMax-ish flic wasn't Armor of Gods, it was a much earlier film (I saw it on video in the 80s). It was a crazy trip, there was every other big name star in it and there was this great epic feel to it.

    Ghosts?

    by pmorano

I remember a Jackie movie with ghosts called "5 Ghosts". Or maybe it was "3 ghosts" (I'm sure it was a prime number...) That's what the box said when I rented it, but it looked like someone just typed "5 Ghosts" on a box. Jackie couldn't fight very well in this and these ghosts, 3 or 5 of 'em, would invisibly catch someones hand right before they hit Jackie and hold it so he could tee off on them.

    Fantasy Mission Force

    by DrunkenLoudMouth

I think that whacked out Chan movie a few of you have mentioned is FANTASY MISSION FORCE. A truly bizarre flick that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. If it had been made during the 60's you could attribute it to psychedelic drugs but this was made in 1985. I love Jackie Chan flicks and have all of his movies but this one is way over the top. There is no logic or continuity....just crazy stunts with alot of big Hong Kong stars. Besides being a "World War II" movie, it has Amazons, Presidents from the wrong time period, a haunted house (with goofy ghosts) and some of the strangest villans you've ever seen. Unbelievable!!!

    Donnie Yen Painting

    by littlepoop

I love all of Donnies movies. After I saw Legend of the Wolf I was inspired to paint something similar to it. The movie was brutal! I admit there wasn't too much fighting but it was the visuals and the mood that caught my attention, not to mention the adrenaline effect it had on me in certain scenes...don't wanna spoil anything. Man. It's really intense. Anyway, here's the link to the pic incase anyone want's to see it. http://www.therealjohnwu.com/Images/Gallery/Rage.jpg
