Andrew Lesnie talks about TWO TOWERS!!!

Hey folks, Harry here - First up there's a few tidbits that have popped up over at TheOneRing.Net which gives us an idea of how long Two Towers is coming in at right now, and that the Ents are not lost... and that the Helm's Deep battle is even longer than we thought!!! So if you want to read about that news go to: HERE, but if you want to read about Andrew Lesnie's talk about TWO TOWERS and LORD OF THE RINGS tonight in Melbourne... continue my friends...

Hi Harry

You might remember me from a few months back when I sent you the trailer for the film 'Below'(whatever happened to that film?? It looked good)

Anyway, I thought I'd write to you about an event that just took place at the Treasury theatre here in Melbourne Australia as part of the Popcorn Taxi program.

Andrew Lesnie (Oscar winning Lord of the Rings DP) was in attendance and shared stories of Oscar night, film making, his career and its humble beginnings, how technology affected the rings trilogy, the pros and cons of digital film grading and how the effect heavy Babe films prepared him for LOTR among many other topics.

Andrew came across as a very funny, likeable and enthusiastic guy who has a genuine love for what he does, very inspiring. It was great to see his early work and refreshing to see that he wasn't ashamed or too hung up to show us some of his very early unpolished material.

He shared stories from his early career (including filming a Mad Max behind the scenes documentary) up to his current role in the LOTR trilogy. He and Peter hit it off immediately when meeting and the amazing attention to detail of the Weta artists was one of the deciding factors to him signing on board as DP. He also mentioned that he and Peter shared a common vision that character acting and storytelling, as well as a solid script be the basis of the film. (a certain un-named fantasy film franchise maker could learn much from this)

The big news here I guess is that he has seen a work print of The Two Towers which he said runs at 3hrs 15 mins (I do not know if this was before or after this years pick-up shots, which he said mainly consisted of character development scenes previously reported)

Andrew mentioned that the second film is very different than the first and that it is much bigger in scale and scope. He also seemed genuinely excited about it in a way that seemed like his honest opinion unlike the hype that seems to pour from Rick McCallum's mouth whenever he seems to open it.

The Two Towers will also be 100% digitally graded (fellowship was approx 70%) thus bypassing the quality losses associated with anamorphic optical stretch which he seemed to think was a more relevant issue in terms of quality loss than interneg/pos printing/duplication from the original film negatives.

He was involved with the pick-up shots earlier in the year and expects to be involved in the pick-up shots next year for Return of the King. Also of interest was his involvement in the lighting of the 3d sets and elements, not typically a job of the average DP.

During the night some Fellowship footage was screened courtesy of Village Roadshow which was an excellent, pristine quality print. I don't remember it looking this good when seeing it even on opening day at the first screening here in Melbourne.

We were also privvy to a screening of the quite funny behind the scenes doco about the Sean Astin directorial debut 'The Long and the Short of it' which was shot on high definition, making use of many key LOTR cast/crew and facilities. This documentary further illustrated the bond and enthusiasm shared by the cast and crew of these films.

All up Andrew was a great pleasure to hear speak, like I said earlier, he was an incredibly likeable, down to earth 'no bullshit' kinda guy. It was easy to understand why he and Peter got along so well. If you live in Melbourne, dig LOTR and the work of Andrew, I cannot imagine a better night out. With so much talk of the pros associated with digital grading I would have liked to hear Andrew's opinion on digital image aquisition via 24p high def but I guess there is only so much you can fit in an evening.

The night was put together by Popcorn Taxi (PopcornTaxi.Com.Au) and was MC'd by Melbourne's own Head Film Geek Paul Harris Hope all this is of some use to you cheers and seeya

The Secret Goldfish

PS The Babe 2 footage screened on the night reminded me how good a film it actually is. I personally listened to the critics of the time and never saw it at the cinema. I was quite shocked at how good it was when seeing it on TV last year. If you haven't seen it, learn from my mistakes and check it out when you can.

PPS Also, Have you heard the sales figures on the Fellowship DVD! Newline must be very happy indeed with the bet they took on Peter and New Zealand. Hats off to the fine enthusiastic and talented folks in New Zealand and Bravo to King Peter. Here's hoping the studios give him anything he desires in the future and best of luck to him during the next round of awards come Oscar time.

If these were the only three movies that I got to see in what's left of 2002, it would be alright. Though I am slightly jonesin' for The Rules of Attraction, Solaris, The Four Feathers, Auto-Focus, and so on. But the three in the subject...those are the ones I need.

Well I'm looking forward to this, but I might have to take in that catheter and eyebath this time, or at least get there earlier so I don't have to sit in the front row - had to look right up Saruman's nose, and when the cave troll let rip with a air biscuit the pregnant lady on my right had to be delivered on the spot! Kid looked just like Gimli, hehe..

  • Or should we just wait until it's been up on every single film website on the planetfor about 3 weeks?

I never thought it would never happen. That I would prefer any saga over Star Wars. Well it has, and as much as I love Star Wars, I'm glad. George Lucas is tired and has run out of imagination. The next ten years will see not just the LOTR trio of fims, but The Hobbit and a mini-series spin off. Mark my words! Star Wars is dead. Long live Lord of the Rings.

Helms Deep at 50 minutes? Even allowing for moving Shelob, devoting nearly a third of the running time to Helms Deep is an awful lot. Methinks Frodo and Sam are going to be a bit short-changed this time around. While I appreciate that they do a lot of wandering which can be "trimmed", there is still a lot of ground to cover - the Riders, Eomer, Gandalf, Meduseld, Isengard, Ents, the Palantir, Saru-kebab, Gollum, Faramir, Minas Morgul. ***Ah well, trying to cause an argument between SW and LOTR is like shotting fish in a barrel...with a nuke.

The blue crush Tb is longer than these LOTR TB. Face it the same twenty losers keep coming back over and over. Its only 20 people on the entire Internet that give a shit about these movies. Nobody else cares. Thanksfully only 20 people need a life. These guys are so sad that they militaryally attack anything "Star Wars", because their insecure with their franchise. You are all are "Lucaphobia". Scare of anything Lucas because your afraid of becoming on of him. Most likely a bunch of fags also since you protect and provide extended rights to the homos. by Brian 2000

I don't get it. I'm starting to get a bit worried that Jackson is spending too much time on the whole Aragorn side of the story and too little time with the Hobbits. Frodo and Sam ARE the story, they are the ones who deserve a 50 minute block of drama.

Ent battle MUST be in theatrical release

    by Jack D. Ripper

There are no words to describe how great the Ents razing of Isengard would be IF DONE RIGHT. 50 minutes for Helm's Deep? That seems like a lot to me...I mean just ONE battle? And squeezing out the destruction of Isengard for it? This doesn't sit right.

    Brian, Vitaly, and MorGoth

    by Halloween68

Brian... I don't think it's a matter of not enough room for Shelob in Towers. I think it's more of a matter of not wanting to end the movie with Frodo stung and left for dead, wanting a more engaging opening to ROTK, and needing more material for ROTK. I don't see the big deal, and why so many people are complaining. It's not like she's being cut. *** Vitaly... Okay, let's see... The Two Towers so far is 3 hours and 15 minutes. That's an hour for Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli in Rohan, an hour for Merry, Pippen and the ents in Fangorn and at Isengard, and an hour for Frodo, Sam, and Gollum (with special guest Faramir) on the road to Mordor. I wouldn't worry if I were you. It seems to me that they have plenty of time to get all the most important pieces on screen. Also, there's no need to worry about the seemingly extended time at Helms Deep. They are combining many big sequences in the book into one location. Dunharrow will now be in the caves at HD. Probably many of the events that happen on the road and at Edoras will now take place in the deep. I seriously doubt, contrary to popular belief, that that 50 minutes mentioned for the deep will be all battle. It's all this other stuff combined. *** MorGoth... I'm not sure if this is in the up-in-up or if it's just a rumor, but I here Quickbeam is not ever named. I suppose that doesn't mean that he won't be there, it's just that he won't be a featured character won't be mentioned. The only Ent named as far as I've heard is Treebeard. Another frightening prospect I've heard is that they've cut the huards. Supposedly it'll all be ents. Ents with no heards but themselves. That's something I'm not too happy about. But on the other hand, the ents are supposed to look enough like trees to have the same effect on the audience so that they persieve it to be a walking forest. Hmmm.

    Time for All.

    by daughter of time

I, too, believe that Frodo and Sam are the heart and soul of LOTR, and I don't think PJ is going to give them short shrift, not with the re-shoots, the time spent on Gollum, the references to expanding the "mind games" on the road, not to mention lovely Faramir (well, mostly lovely; in that one shot of him in the DVD preview, he looks a bit like Boromir's village idiot brother, but the next shot reverts to form, so call it bad light - especially with that gorgeous photo of him at Comic-Con)... Anyway, I think we're being shown more of the big set-piece stuff because it's huge and colorful and will definitely pull in the epic audience, whereas shots of Frodo and Sam crawling making their slow and painful way through Emyn Muil are mainly of interest to those of us who already care, and anything more involved (say, dialogue with Faramir, or a peak at Minas Morgul) would give away too much. I don't find a single moment of Frodo and Sam's journey boring, and I don't want to lose a second of it to Helm's Deep, but I don't think we're going to. And I'm also sure that "Helm's Deep" references more than 50 minutes of wall-scaling by orcs, and will include dramatic lulls in the battle and much personal interplay. ***By the way, haven't heard much about Sam's poetry in the Houghton-Mifflin promo - his eulogy to Gandalf, I believe. Has everyone skipped over it on their way to TTT and the extended DVD, or was it all discussed elsewhere? Suffice to say, I loved it. *** Vitaly, have you ever heard Waxman's "Taras Bulba"? You would die over it.

No Huorns (sorry about the Huards; don't know where I got Huards), that's what I've heard. But the sources I've heard from are not confirmed. Spies. Oh, and also, I meant herd of Huorns in my last post, not heards of Huards. Eek! What a bad typist am I when in a hurry.

I know the sad truth of it. I am very unhappy to see my namesake never appear as a fully-realized WETA creation. But the devastating set-piece of the Ents marching on Isengard will be better than spectacular...... it will be SPECTACULAR SPECTACULAR! Hot damn, this little palantir thingy is so much better at revealing the truth from distant lands than the New Line official website! hee-hee. It gets 128 premium channels too.

    how is it 3:15?

    by DufusyteII

PJ said there was not enough material in the Two Towers to make a whole film (er, maybe because they already shifted material out of TTT into Fellowship [Boromir's Death] and into Rotk [Shelob]), and then next thing you know he ends up with a 3:15 running time. Does that mean it's going to be both Long and Uneventful?

    by FD Resurrected

Babe Pig in the City is an existentialist masterpiece. George Miller rules! The Two Towers, like Back to the Future Part II, will be much, much darker - hope the third installment receive the box office return as well as the first two movies. Films with dark themes turn out to be great often.

    by Ralph Cifaretto

Sam & Frodo are the real story - it's why Tolkien puts them last in The T.T. Their scenes will be small & intimate, and psychological. As for how much EMPHASIS will be on them, I really don't know. The flick *will* end with their ascent into danger (Gollum's betrayal will shurely be the climatic scene/revelation). My guess is the screen time will be almost equal w/ 'the war.' One thing is for sure, "Return of the King" will be kicking some serious ASS. Shelob -----> Grey Havens. Wow. Of course, it also goes without saying that "Return of the King" will appear pretty lame alongside Episode 3.

The 3 hr. 15 min. running time will be trimmed. I think there is plenty of cool stuff to hold a 2:20 - 2:30 running time. Gollum: If Gollum is nailed, he might be a character that catches people's attention like Hannibal Lechter or Darth Vader. I know, I know, that's saying a lot, but...

Yeah, this was a good night, and about the running time of TTT..

    by Mr_Sinister

I was at this Popcorn Taxi event and thought it was great. It was particularly useful for people interested in the technical side of things. Now, about the running time...I thought Lesnie said he saw a 2 and a quarter hour cut of TTT, NOT 3. And for the person who mentioned Roger Deakins work on The Man Who Wasn't There, Lesnie said he had his money on Deakins to win the Oscar! Hehe. Anyway, Lesnie seemed like a very nice guy, and I was surprised at how many familiar commercials he'd shot.

    LOTR replacing star wars

    by 2112syrinx

Lookee here, Im a SW fan like a BIG DOG. Love it. LOVE IT. HOWEVER... at NO TIME did star wars ever once supercede the hobbit, the lord of the rings and the Silmarillion as the greatest saga in geekdom (or whatever rubbish you called it). Now if youre comparing the FILMS, then anybody that thinks fotr schools star wars is just fucking CRACKED. Reason is...THEY ARE NOT IN COMPETITION. They exist simultaneously...if SW Geeks and Trekkies can peacefully coexist, surely ringers and sw geeks can. Having said that, Technicaly speaking FOTR wouldn't have been possible without uncle george and his bag of trix, or else it would have been a bunch of bad miniatures and ridiculous rubber suits. Thematically speaking, SW wouldn't have been possible (or again, more ridiculous rubber suits) if not for J R R. Notice a distinct lack of PJ's mention. While he did an OUTSTANDING job of adapting the masters work to the screen, it was JRR and the stories that are the MEAT. PJ has only a fractional role in the greatness of FOTR. He made a good translation, but his contribution to film (and therefore the SALT of geekdom) is pretty small. Impressive, but small. In a few years now that uncle george has passed his prime, PJ I'm sure, is going to step up to the plate. Maybe LOTR is his way of stepping up. Of course, he had me from dead-alive. Sorry. Had to vent. Love you all.

Only 50 minutes for Helms Deep?

    by Lord_Soth

And 135 for boredom? Just kidding.

  • August 17, 2002 3:28 PM CST

Perhaps THIS will be how 'The Two Towers' is paced:

    by Ralph Cifaretto

1st half: The Ents, Gandalf's return (Balrog flashback?), Gollum leading lost Frodo & Sam to the Black Gate, Aaragorn putting together a last stand at Helm's Deep.-----------------------------2nd half: 50 min. battle, then off to Isengard. Cut to 30 min. or so of Frodo, Sam, & Gollum meeting Faramir, then cut back to Isengard for Saruman's defeat, and then comes the real ending when Gollum leads Frodo & Sam to the stairs of Cirith Ungol. Of course they see the army leave Mordor also.

    Lesnie v Deakins

    by Mrs Danvers

There's often benign politics @ work in DP Oscars (or as we call'em in Oz, D-O-P's). I went to film school with Andrew and agree that Deakins's work was more beautiful, but Andrew had been shafted by Fox, Cruise, Woo & co on MI1 when he was sacked with his crew (or allowed to 'resign') in favour of someone's preference about a week into main unit. Being the affable and lovely man that he his, no doubt his fellows needed to make an anti-producer statement, not that Andrew doesn't deserve an Oscar too. Remember Dean Semler's Oscar? Sure the work was magnificent and the man's a walking cinematography encyclopedia, but when you're working with a director who's only been an actor (I repeat: 'Actor'!) then you're doing a damn sight more than lighting the picture. Another example of a supportive Oscar from the hearts as well as minds of the DP peergroup.

  • August 19, 2002 9:02 AM CST

Agreed with Ralph: It will be trimmed down from 3:15

    by Oberon

Haven't posted here in nearly a year, but I thought I'd drop in my dittos on Ralph's comment: That however much cachet Jackson has acquired thanks to the runaway success of LOTR, I simply cannot imagine that New Line is going to let him submit a running time of 3 hours 15 minutes. The Two Towers is surely still in a rough cut status, as FOTR was at this point, and my expectation is that TTT will end up close to FOTR's running time. That almost surely means that some of the Helm's Deep sequence will be trimmed, which it can be while leaving it plenty of time onscreen. As a side note, I'm disappointed to hear that the Shelob sequence appears to have been pushed back to ROTK, as it would have made...well, would have made for a perfect "cliffhanger" ending to the second. I can only assume that that is simply not the note on which Jackson wanted to end the second film. But then I suppose it's hard to second guess his judgment on such things.

It's been a while since I posted here last. Dont have the connection any more. Just want to add my comments on all this. I'm excited by the prospect of a long battle sequence. I'm looking forward to seeing Legolas and Gimli keeping scores on how many Orcs they kill. It's a pity that Shelob can't be in this next one but I have faith in Mr.Jackson to deliver the goods yet again. I wont reread the 2nd book this time like I did the last time. This was a mistake and I was too critical. The book has faded from memory somewhat so I'm looking to experience that magic yet again. Peace.
