About That EXORCIST Prequel...

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

How does a rumor like this get started? I mean, I understand how people start tossing around names like David Fincher or Sam Raimi or Spielberg or whatever when a project is announced. Part wish list, part process of offers, names leak out and get reported. But how does the rumor get started that David Rocksavage is directing something?

Here’s the letter I got:

M,

Just wanted to let you know that Rocksavage is definitely not attached to the EXORCIST prequel. I know that item also appeared on DARK HORIZONS, but it isn't true.

Also, just as an FYI, we're not going with EXORCIST 4:1. For now, we're just referring to it as the prequel to THE EXORCIST.

Best,

Greg Mielcarz

Head of Worldwide Publicity

Morgan Creek Productions

Well, I’m curious to see how this one unfolds now. Like I said, it’s a good script. It’s pretty scary, with the one major flaw being that we know Father Merrin survives, since it’s a prequel. It removes any tension from his fate. Otherwise, it’s a very solidly built horror piece with some memorable moments, and I wouldn’t mind seeing it finally get made. I just hope they find a director that really excites them, and not just someone to get it moving at any cost.

Thanks very much for the clarification, Greg. I appreciate it.

"Moriarty" out.

Ok, I think we've been grossed out enough by the animation..

    by Viper-GunClan

Yeah, you've made your point, whatever the hell that is...Eyes Wide Whatever, the movie sucked ass. Rent it in the 87 Cent 5 nights section if you want to be bored to tears...almost as bad as Attack of the Clones. I've pretty much lost all respect for this sight and the shitty childish reviews 'poor fact checking just to have a headline' that frequent this place. I'll stick w/Coming Attractions. Your suck up review on clones was bad enough but your perversity has now prompted me to say 'sayonara' to this 'less than shrug' website.

Mark THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES Pellington is the only man for this

    by Spacesheik

I loved Mark Pellington's THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES. It was one of the most audacious horror films I've ever seen; taut, engrossing, beautifully shot and edited, with great performances by Richard Gere and Laura Linney and a slam bang ending that just left us with our mouths open. I loved that film. Director Mark Pellington would be great for the new EXORCIST, he's an original talent with a unique visual and pacing sense.

    Wrong

    by METHOS

Pellington has done features before. He directed the excellent, but largely forgotten "Arlington Road" with Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins. He's a solid guy. I still haven't seen "Mothman Prophesies." Word is the soundtrack by Tomandandy is excellent. Best Wishes

"great performance",and "Richard Gere." Why? Why doesn't he just quit? 'CAUSE HE'S GOT NO PLACE ELSE TO GO!!!!! I love watching the once proud Lois Gosset Jr. punch him in the nuts. You can almost see the hamster popping out the other side...

To each his own, Springheel, I LOVED MOTHMAN

    by Spacesheik

Fuck you Springheel. I loved the movie, so you don't have to call me a dumbass because I enjoyed the film. I don't give a shit about the book asshole - I was giving my opinion on a movie not deciding whether it lived up to the book or not, you cunt.I stand by what I said: THE MOTHMAN PROPECHIES is a disturbing, taut thriller, and yes, it does have a hell of a Gere performance whether you like him or not. And Will Patton is excellent too. Even the score was freaky. Mark Pellington is a talented director (ARLINGTON ROAD) and if you or others here want to dismiss him as "a music video director" then I prolly assume you're favorite movie is BIODOME.

  • My point is as follows, I enjoyed the movie, you didn't. You bitch about the source material, I don't care about the source material, I was giving my brief critique of the film. And instead of going into a civilized dialogue about what you liked or didn't like about the film, you headline your post "Why Spacesheik is a Dumbass," which is why I took such relish in calling you a "cunt." I rarely use that insult, I only save it for turds such as yourself. Secondly, this is what you said: "Anyone who enjoyed "Mothman" did so for the visuals only. What else was there? Terrible performances. Pedestrian effects". If you don't like Richard Gere in general, that's one thing, but don't forget the man can give good performances (PRIMAL FEAR for example). I thought his work in MOTHMAN was subdued, and at times, effectively emotional. Will Patton and Laurra Linney were also quite good. "Pedestrian effects" you said. There was nothing pedestrian about the grande guignol finale; it was spectacular and the special effects were very effective. Oh, and another thing "Indrid Cold" in the movie scared the shit out of me. You diss Mark Pellington because you "loved the book" the movie was based on...Pellington did great work on ARLINGTON ROAD, a great paranoid terrorist thriller ahead of its times, and Tim Robbins and Jeff Bridges worked well together. And unlike other directors who run out of steam and cop out their thrillers, Pellington with both ARLINGTON and MOTHMAN delivers the goods in the end. Springheel, your ISHTAR videotape is calling for you; go watch it sucka.

Springheel, this is an EXORCIST prequel, this isnt BATTLESHIP PO

    by Spacesheik

This is an Exorcist prequel, a continuation of not one but TWO crappy sequels - the "Pazzuzu" one with Richard Burton and the tedious "cerebral" one with William Blatty directing. There is nothing grand or groundbreaking about this. The only element of class it had was the John Frankenheimer directing gig, but the late director had to quit. Liam Neeson might add some class but after THE HAUNTING I doubt it. You know something you are right, Springheel, Mark Pellington shouldn't direct this - he's too good for this material, he's an original talent that needs his own canvass.

  • July 27, 2002 5:10 PM CST

    Curses!

    by Spacesheik

"...you misspelled "canvas" Spacesheik curses thee: "May your ship sink in the North Atlantic and Shelley Winters mistake you for a lifeboat!"
