Bobo The Hog Saw Vin Diesel

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Bobo’s may be the first report we’ve gotten in about a screening of this film. I personally think the new trailer for the film is a lot of fun, and I’m finally interested. If this movie manages to capture the particular goofball charm that Vin Diesel exudes in person, the thing that makes executives fall for the guy, then there’s a chance this could close the summer with a big goddamn bang.

Here’s what the Hog has to say:

Harry and Moriarty,

My handle is Bobo the Hog, and I am a first time poster, long time reader.

I happened into the first screening for the public of XXX last week at the Bridge in Westchester, Cali. Just a piece of advice, if you find out any screening you are at is put on by MTV, run for the hills. This movie started an hour late, but thank the gods it was one with The Vin.

Though the movie didn’t have the opening title sequences, most of the sound effects were missing and a lot of the computer effects were partials, I have to say the movie kicks ass. It doesn’t kick in a way where you spend the rest of the day thinking about the philosophical implications, and the story is nothing original. Sorry, there is none of the wafer-thin, psuedo attempts at intelligence that Spielberg tried with Minority Report. That being said, you people aren’t going to see this movie for that, right? There aren’t really any spoilers, either.

Vin is an extreme athlete who is recruited to be a spy, goes to eastern Europe to fight former Russian soldiers, gets the girl and saves the day. None of that matters, because he does all that in ways cooler than any spy before him could imagine. The Vin makes Bond look like the British priss he is. The Vin makes you want to be a spy, because then you would be a badass snowboarding, skateboarding, skydiving, motorcycle jumping, ass kicking, getting all the girls mother. If you liked “Fast and the Furious” or just thought it was kind of cool to watch, then this is that movie cranked to 11. Go see it, and dig The Vin.

People you know what you are getting here, but it is more fun to watch than anything I’ve seen this summer, but that PG-13 sucks. You will know what I mean when Vin starts macking on the ladies.

Oh, and the cameos of Tony Hawk and Matt Hoffman were cool, too.

Now for one complaint:

First, what is with all these computer effects that don’t look real at all? You are sitting there, completely into the movie, and suddenly you are watching X-Box on the screen without the benefit of being the person playing. You know what I am talking about. That scene in Attack of the Clones when Anakin is standing/riding that bull/cow thing. That was bullshit. Those moments take one completely out of the story, and they all suck. XXX has a couple of these that I hope are fixed for the final release (you could be blind and see them during the snowboarding part), but these things are becoming more common than David Arquette sightings in bad movies. They all suck.

Forever, Bobo the Hog

Silly, but great action. If this is just as good or better, then I'll be happy. I didn't dig the trailer all that much though, and everyone else loved it. Anyway, it looks like Rob Cohen needs Vin Diesel around to whack off a good movie.

is that he is a big bastard action star that reminds us of the 80's, which is usually a bad thing. But the 80's did have some good action films.

Here's what Kevin Smith said in his Arena article....

"In that last week alone, I've been tipped off by several credible sources that the up-and-coming (some would say, already there) macho action star who looks like he's all about the pussy is apparently really, really gay... ....this is a guy who's probably got every 15 to 20 year old girl (hell, even their mothers) salivating over the thought of having the dude's huge biceps crushing their midriffs as he works their nipples while going down on them." -------- Sounds like he could only be talking about Vin Diesel....

Okay, once Rage Against The Machine stopped doing it... you'd think the rest of America would have caught on. Nope, unlike the rest of the world... they NEED to have some cheesy rap/rock band that was ASSEMBLED EXACTLY THE SAME WAY AS A BOY BAND. The only difference between a boy bands and Lincoln Park is that the boy bands took dance lessons at the same time Lincoln Park were learning how to play instruments and pose angry. Bullocks to both!!! Who can I blame??? Hmmmmm, world wrestling Entertainment (the most homo erotic show on the planet) and MTV for putting shit music like that on the air. "Click, CLick Boom..." Yeah, sounds great guys, but you can say it again... only more cheesy and contrived this time? Okay, perfect... we got it! IF XXX features another lame soundtrack, I'll be a little disapointed because what's the point really? Why not actually SCORE the film with an acutal symphony and/or some non-lyrical electronica (ala Dark City)??? Oh well... maybe in 10 years, these kinds of movies will have a sort of "80's retro nostaligia feel to them." Still... Enough with the video game music...

Vin Diesel has about as much charm as John Rocker. I'm glad heyjude8675309 agrees. He was good in "Saving Pvt. Ryan", and was thankfully killed by the German sniper before he could fuck up the rest of the film. Vin is just Freddy Prinze Jr. with muscles: Somebody with no acting talent whatsoever who is cashing in before enough people take notice that he's not good enough to work in film.

I'm not excited at all about this. I think I outgrew the "lets put an action hero in as many scenarios as possible and then blow stuff up" phase (e.g. the snowboarding, skateboarding, biking, etc.). I will probably rent it because I am amused by these movies, but not that much. Hey as long as it doesn't make every jackass in the US buy a honda and put 20 in. rims and a ridiculous fin on it like Fast and Furious did...

    Let's look at the concept...

    by Theta

A "Fred Durst-type James Bond." Slight problem; Bond is literate, intelligent, and able to seduce the kind of women who would castrate Durst (probably literally; tell me Grace Jones or Bambi and Thumper wouldn't make short work of the guy.) Durst is an illiterate (he's publicly stated this and is proud of it) dolt who can only pick up skanks, and probably not even that when he becomes a "where-is-he-now?" victim. I think some good can come of "XXX"; with "The Sum of All Fears" having a fair amount of success, if "XXX" does well (just well enough to make money, but not enough to justify the sequel), maybe MGM will be inspired to cast somebody younger as Bond, and give the franchise a little juice. The movie itself is probably a wash.

CALM THE FUCK DOWN!!!! Let a person have a fucking opinion, for christ's sake, and stop acting like a ten year old throwing a tantrum. That said, I think this looks pretty fun. Vin's got a decent track record in my book - Private Ryan I liked him, Pitch Black I loved, Fast and the Furious. . . not so good Al. But this does look guiltily entertaining, and it IS summer time, so I think I'll check it out. Looks cheesy as HELL, but that's not always a bad thing.

Vin Diesel is gonna make James Bond look "prissy?" Is this where the laugh track goes? I'm gonna see this, since I really, really enjoy idiotic everything goes boom movies, (THE LAST BOY SCOUT anyone?) but let's not kid ourselves, OK? BTW, the following line was taken from the IMDB: "Oscar-winner Sir Anthony, 64, handed over his honorary mayorship of Pacific Palisades to Police Academy actor Steve Guttenberg." Irrelevant, but no less staggering.

Vin Diesels stuntman died on this film...

    by Ucho

...shooting the scene where he is para-gliding down the Vltava river while attached to the XXX (not going to spoil it). He hit a bridge and died. Vin was one of the only ones not to show up for the funeral...despite that the movie should still be fun though.

  • These things are supposed to be about violence, for Christ's sake. If it doesn't have blood spraying from fresh wounds, it isn't a real action movie. I'm sick and tired of these cute little harmless family-friendly pictures being sold as action-packed thrill-rides, while perfectly violent mindless gore flicks like Gladiator and Private Ryan get overstuffed with boring chunks of bad dialogue so they can qualify for the oscars. When did popular entertainment lose its balls?

Rob Cohen headed the film division of Motown in the 70s and has always been close to production and lives of much of the music that came from there during that time. I think he is more than apt to choose the music in par with the taste and style for "his" film than you. See it first and then decide. Ciao.

    by X_Reagh

First of all I jsut want to say James Bond was Scottish in the books, so the whole Brit comment isn't even really relevant. Secondly, you people aren't sleeping with Vin so WTF does it matter to you if he's gay, straight, bi or abstinent? What does who he's sleeping with have to do with the movies? If you don't like his movies, don't go. If you like them, enjoy. It's as simple as that. I happen to think xXx is going to be a great movie, pure escapist fun, lots of exposed flesh, big explosions and some smart ass wit from what I saw in the trailers. I'm not looking for mental stimulation from it; if I want to work my brain I'll dig out my Chaucer books.

The Things I'm Gonna do for my Country

    by Gunn

Well, T-Squared, if you've only ever seen Vin Diesel in Fast and The Furious, you can be forgiven for being less than inspired - not that it was a totally bad movie - it was fun. I'm afraid both the direction and the script were questionable at times and did Vin do justice in scenes where he could have shined. It only takes a look at the contrast between the characters Riddick (Pitch Black) and Chris Varick (Boiler Room) to demonstrate the range Vin is capable of so don't make the mistake of considering him to be simply a muscle-bound action man.

Phoenix; just wondering if you've read the books? I love the Bond movies myself, although I really think Sean Connery did the role better justice than anyone sense, capturing the lecherous boozehound that was the written Bond. I also think xXx is playing around with a lot of the cliches and taking a tongue in cheek swat at Bond here & there, that seems obvious from the ads. Looks like it's all in fun, so I look forward to seeing it. I'm of the mind though that this should no more be compared to the Bond movies that the Austin Powers series should.

Every single time we have a thread involving Vin Deisel, someone brings up the gay rumor, and everyone else acts like it's the first time they've heard it. It's been around for months. Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. WHO CARES? Our gay friends need more guys that they can fantasize over with some legitimacy. As far as I'm concerned, if a gay guy can become one of the top-billed action stars in Hollywood, more power to him. On a side note, is it just me, or is Kevin Smith the only person in the spotlight who could get away with saying "All about the pussy,"?

Seriously, it was a bad cartoon pretending to be a film, the cliches, the acting, the script, even the action scenes were all awful. People, please wake up, surely I'm not the only twenty something male that can see this pile of dung for what it is?!?! Now then, if xXx bares any relation to TFATF then I'll wait until it is shown on tv before I even consider watching it. Oh and there really isn't any point in comparing xXx to Bond, (I've seen the trailer), Bond is and always will be a classic (the perfect movie character no less). Shonin.

Anyone who thinks this dude can't act, find yourself a copy of this short film (Short: Diversity), and watch him bust some serious acting chops. He is ultra-talented and pretty damn funny to boot. Of course, he is totally gay, but that just helps him heap on the machismo. He knows exactly what sort of persona leads to bedwetting amongst starstruck little geeks who have crushes on their favorite male actors cause they can't get laid by chicks. Shit, just like yours truly.

Why are some of you so hung up on Vin's sexuality? It shouldn't even matter whether he likes females or males, it's his choice - not yours. People should be open minded enough in this day and age, just to accept it. Before you ask (or accuse me of being gay), i'm female :-) I think Vin is hot, but I admire his acting ability and Vin as a person. Right now i'm waiting patiently for xXx to come out in the UK. In that I won't. I actually rented FATF and felt mildly nauseous for the rest of the day. I guess I'm just getting too old (or smart) for this type of stuff. Of course if you're over 15 with an IQ of 75+ I think that you meet those requirements.

    "Freddy Prinze with muscles" indeed...

    by phasmatrope

...and a very apt description that was. I just don't really get all the fuss over Vin Diesel, either. He is a throwback to the musclebound Schwarzenegger-Stallone-Van Damme heroes of the 80s. And while he may be cool in real life--I read an comment he'd made about when he was working as a bouncer, he used to get into fights with the other neanderthal bouncers for being too brutal on the customers--but still... he just seems so stiff (and not in the gay way everyone's talking about). No real range to his emotions, or even that supposedly famous gravelly voice of his (I find it laughable that he received any press for doing the robot voice on "Iron Giant," when the DVD shows that he not only tweaked it in the recording studio, but in post-prod... gimme a break, I'm sure after all that manipulation, ANYONE could sound like Darth Vader!!!). Granted, I haven't seen "Pitch Black" yet, so I could be in for a surprise. But still, it's nothing more than the usual wide-eyed presumptuous studio arrogance that presumed this guy should jump directly into starring in films this big and loud right after a film as safe as "Fast And The Furious." We all know that the cars were the star of that movie anyway (because really, where's Paul Walker's big starring action vehicle?)

Fast and the Furious' Cardinal Sin:

    by Almost Sexy

I thought The Fast and the Furious was really, really awful. Going in to it, I wasn't expecting Doctor Zhivago (which I haven't seen), but I was under the impression that the car race/chase scenes would be interesting to watch. Sadly, they were rather pedestrian. The race at the beginning is wholly uninvolving on even the most basic popcorn-munching level, and the scene with the gut-shot guy hanging from the semi-truck was just tiresome. By the time you get to the one halfway-decent chase scene at the end of the movie, it's just not enough. With the car race premise, you'd think they'd have worked harder on those scenes. It wasn't even as good as the Bruckheimer Gone In Sixty Seconds. For really good car chase scenes, I'd recommend To Live and Die in L.A., Bourne Identity, and The Blues Brothers.

Movies need Vin Diesel. I welcome his illiteracy, his obvious drug use, blue collar frame, and the post-Stallonian projects he'll likely produce. Why? We are infested with guys who grew up overly connected in some way in films. This guy is 34-35 years old. He has spent enough time on the outside, and he doesn't have a Dad who is a drug counselor to the Stars, Mr. Affleck. Diesel works very well on screen; he appeals to the street culture of today. In the drive-by scene of Fast and the Furious, the guy is a fantastic action actor.

  • Diesel might be a horrible one-note performer, but that's because he has zero talent, not because he's gay!.........It's been rumoured that Olivier, Grant (Cary), Burton (Richard) and Brando were bisexual. Did that make them bad actors?........ I rest my case.

  • Hollywood runs the risk of losing MILLIONS of dollars when a star is going to be pulled out of the closet. They spare no expense to squash these rumors, even if that includes "arranged" girlfriends and sometimes marriages. Keanu Reevs is STILL gay and I have been hearing that "rumor" for almost a decade now. Cover up or mistake? Vin Deisel always did seem feminine to me, so I am not surprised at all. Plus he's not fucking every chick in Hollywood like Affleck, Damon, Pitt etc. used to, so it makes sense. Straight guys bang hot chicks when they become famous. PERIOD. That's 90% of the reason you become famous in the first place!

    DIESELING DOWN THE HERSHEY HIGHWAY

    by TomVee

Diesel is an wildly uneven performer. If he indeed is gay, it will definitely hurt his career as there is nothing about him to "forgive" his traveling the Hershey Highway. Kevin Spacey seems to have gotten away with being forced out of the closet because he is a pretty terrific actor a good deal of the time. Ditto Richard Gere and -- keanu Reeves???? Who the hell ever intimated this stalwart, standup heterosexual might be gay?

    Diesel fuel burning out....

    by Doom II

Vin is an ok performer, but his main draw is his masculine macho persona. If it is spread around or proven that he likes man-pole, then he loses his female fans (that want him sexually) and his male fans (that want to BE him), then he's done. I personally do not care. Fast & The Furious was not something I could get into. Pitch Black was cool, but that was due mainly to the directors fine job. XXX looks like that Richard Greico spy/ action/comedy/romance movie from the 80's...what the fuck was that called again?

I giggle every time I see a trailer for this thing. It looks like fun. No, it won't be a replacement for Bond--you can't really replace a classic--but by itself it looks to be a decent little actioner. I'll have to go see, of course, to be sure. And gay or not, Vin's cool so lay off him will yaz?! Jeez. Oh, hey, here's a (bad) idea: perhaps if this thing really goes over the top they can do a crossover flick with Bond. It would be your classic buddy-cop film stuff, in this case where the suave British MI6 agent has to find a way to work with his uncouth Yankee CIA partner xXx to take down the next Bin-Laden wannabe. OK, I'll shut up now. ^_^ Toppu o Nerae!

This secret society was extremely powerful and deeply entrenched in big business so that all these business names were actually secret codes--- like Oscar Meyer Weiners were blatantly saying that Meyer of MGM was homosexual. Ahem. And Hoover vacuums were derogatory against J.Edgar Hoover. Stuff like that. (I'm straight, but it's just my imagination.) So anyway, there was this major underground fight between an arayan secret society and a homosexual group that was played out in public although few people could understand the signs. And "mother's milk" was the tears of God because for every child born, the unintentional cruelty he or she would inflict on others was the very source of their humanity. Or something like that.

Bond a British priss? HELL NO!

    by screenplaywriter

Bond will always be cool no matter what line of marketing mumbo-jumbo, or new competition spy-feature crap they throw at him. The only movie that I thought was probably better than a Bond film was "True Lies", but that's it. This "XXX" seems cool, but the whole thing where he pulls the shute and somehow makes underneath the bridge, or some stuff like that is pretty lame, but Vin Diesel is a good actor, he just needs to get back into some other movies. I mean "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN" was the film that jump-started his career, why doesn't he do another war drama? Or do something where he kicks ass while not playing a spy, but a soldier, or a thief, or something else. The problem with what I have with Bond-copycats is they usually render up to his level, but Bond always kicks their ass in the end when his movie comes out. "Die Another Day" will have him facing Koreans, living it up with Halle Barry as Jinx, and it'll have a cool hideout called The Ice Palace. So...even if "XXX" makes millions of dollars Bond will be sure to put his box-office fee higher.

    Diesel's what we need

    by hazrdousmaterial

I don't see why so many people have trouble accepting the fact that Vin Diesel is what the movie's need right now. All the bad-asses are getting old and grey, Schwarzaneggar, Stallone(Jesus, where DID he go?),hell, even Bruce Willis is slowing down. The 2000's need a big mo-fo that can stomp ass and be the next big action hero. Gay or not, world-renowned thespian or not, we all need the occasional movie with lots of action and ass-kicking and I think Vin fits the bill perfectly. If anyone hasn't seen Pitch Black, go rent that sumbitch..and I'll see you at xXx.

    X_Reagh.....

    by Praetor

Regardless of whether or not Bond is Scottish or English, he is still British. Britain comprises the Kingdoms of England and Scotland and the Principality of Wales. Oh and Bobo, anyone who expresses xenophobic generalisations deserves to be spat on.

    Kevin Smith is a homophobe.

    by Wee Willie

Who cares if Vin's gay. It's his business. I wonder how many viruses I'll be e-mailed because of this post. And to the guy who e-mailed me because of my Alamo post: Up yours, you Yellow Rose shit for brains.

    Vin Diesel

    by Jango Matt

xXx looks to be a fun film, but if it's as good as The Fast and the Furious i'll shoot myself..that film was a piece of shit. Anyway, the films i'm really looking forward to with old Vin is the 2 follow ups to Pitch Black-The Chronicles of Riddick. Those are gonna rule.

Bond a British priss? Ripped-off more like!!

    by laguna_loire

I saw the ad for this, and the bit where Vin says "The things I do for my country" before proceeding to bed the girl? Ripped right-out of Thunderball, from dear 'ol' Sean!! And I'm sure I'm not the only one who's spotted this either!! Bond may well be a priss to you, but the difference is he's done it on film for 40 years now, in written-form a good deal longer (Casino Royale was the first, in 1953 I believe, so you do the math) and isn't so much a film genre anymore, more an institution. I'll have Bond and his cool stylings thanks, you keep your sodding MTV-wannabe agents. There's only one 007, and he's back in November!!

I'm gay and not afraid to admit it

    by Dr_Zoidberg

You see, I'm actually bisexual and I get the cream of the crop (literally). I don't find Vin attractive, but would fuck his ass any time. XXX looks and sounds good though.

i'm clever and straight, is it okay with you if i watch this

    by kudos von poncho

i don't give a toss who's gay and who isn't. half the people here seem to be pissed off that someone might be gay, some seem angry that this film doesn't have lofty intellectual pretension. IT IS A MOVIE! one thing the world is not short of is movies. go and watch a different one. don't rag on people who want to see it, don't rag on people who don't. that said, rob cohen's connection with mototwn in no way legitimises his credentials as i've seen 'the wiz' and it is piffle.
