Daisy Ridley Goes Shakespearean In The Official Trailer For OPHELIA

Who doesn't like a good ol' Shakespeare "re-imagining?" While it is true that the bard's work has likely been revamped more than any other playwright in history, it is hard to argue with anyone wanting to retread such classic and powerful storytelling. In Claire McCarthy's OPHELIA, the infamous story of Hamlet is reworked by writer Semi Chellas to feature a more contemporary tone and fresh perspective. While their take definitely doesn't to go full Luhrmann, Chellas' dialogue seems to be a bit more accessible for those who have trouble following 16th century iambic pentameter.

With an impressive cast featuring Daisy Ridley as the titular character as well as Naomi Watts, Clive Owen, George Mackay, and Tom Felton in supporting roles, OPHELIA looks pretty promising. It also doesn't hurt that the current mania surrounding the end of another mega-hit sword and shield drama (cough, GAME OF THRONES, cough) has created an insatiable appetite for similar fare- whether it's an original story or a well-worn favorite.

The film opens in theater on 6/28 and will be available On Demand and Digital on 7/3. Check out the trailer below.
