UPDATE!! SPIDER-M4N (Not) Delayed Indefinitely??

Published at:  Jan 06, 2010 12:14:18 PM CST

Merrick again...

IESB updated their SPIDER-M4N delay story (HERE) to include the following statement:

UPDATE: Sony has contacted us this morning and they are denying the story. The production is on their expected holiday hiatus, but will ramp up again early next year.

Yes, the filmmakers are working on the script, but there is nothing unusual about that at all, productions always are working and tweaking scripts right up until principal photography begins and that is still a few months away.

End of update.

The same details...i.e. SPIDER-M4N taking hiatus for the Holidays...are also reflected over at SuperheroHype (HERE).Thanks for the heads-up, Chris.

Interestingly (and not surprisingly), neither "update" confirms or refutes Raimi's alleged preference for Vulture -vs- The Suits' alleged desire for a a more marketable villain (per IESB's initial report). Be this as it may, SPIDER-M4N appears to be progressing as announced and scheduled & has not been "delayed indefinitely".

Merrick here...

We first heard murmurs about this a few days ago, but didn't have enough specifics to post anything worthwhile. However, IESB now has details regarding an apparent stall-out of the fourth SPIDER-MAN film - evidently referred to as SPIDER-M4N in the project's offices.

An "inside source" tells IESB:

Looks like everyone's friendly neighborhood web slinger has been been placed on indefinite hold
[EDIT]
Apparently, several department heads working on the SPIDER-M4N production were notified of the halt last Thursday.
[EDIT]
Looks like Raimi and the studio heads at Sony Pictures can't agree upon a villain for the film.

...reveals IESB HERE. '

The article goes on to indicate that Sam Raimi does, indeed, want to use The Vulture in the movie (previously indicated HERE), but the studio doesn't want Vulture - "they seem to only be interested in featuring which ever character is selling books right now but basically they have no idea, just not the Vulture."

Interesting that we hear of these issues so close to learning that Tobey Maguire is in talks to play Bilbo in THE HOBBIT (details HERE, ultimately denied...sorta...HERE). Not saying the factors are connected, or necessarily portend an altogether dire fate for SPIDER-M4N. Just noting the peculiar nexus.

Find more details at IESB by clicking the article link above.

    by i am_notreal

A disjointed mess, devoid of thrill, sloppy, confused, listless junk that basically made its hero look like an inept loser for 9/10ths of the running time. Unless 4 is really on track to be something special, it might be best left on the shelf until new blood can be brought to the franchise.

    by thunderbolt ross

If you're hiring the guy, with his track record, just let him use the villain he's got enthusiasm for. The key is to get a good movie made. Then you'll make a tons of money. As for Kraven, I like the idea but not that JM Dematteis story with Vermin replced by Lizard (or whatever). I reallllllly don't think we need another "dark" superhero story, not about Spidey anyway. Leave that to Batman or whoever. I'm sure Raimi would be into using the Lizard but wasn't the word that the studio didn't want it? That seems stupid, so it's probably true.

I thoguht this script was well on it's way to being completed! That vulture thing was a purposeful leak by the studio to show Raimi that his idea for the villain was FUCKING RETARDED! Once all the hate got piled on, they felt justified in pulling the plug on the idea. Hopefully they also the message that we want Lizard and Kraven. But seriously, we want Raimi back in horror. Drag Me To Hell was the fucking shiznit and we want more of that. There are like a BAJILLION other directors that could do amazing things with Spider-Man. Give them a chance!

    by oldschooldandd

Nothing is perfect, but the first two Spideys were great films. I don't know what strikes the fancy of folks that hate the first two... but for me, 3 was the blemish on an otherwise great series. 3 got screwed up because the studio put way too much pressure on Raimi for what they wanted. Vulture is not my favorite villian - I'd rather see a take on Electro or Lizard or Mysterio, but above all that, I'd rather see a villian that Raimi is really invested in and excited about. I think he would turn around a fair amount - certainly not all by any means - of the Vulture naysayers. It's all about what serves the story best. I still wish I could have seen Raimi's 3 that hand Sandman all by his lonesome.

Spider-Man vs. Sony? After Spider-Man 3, it's quite obvious that they've been out to kill him for some time now and this certainly lends more credence to that. Maybe Spider-Man should fight a bunch of studio heads who "Have a better idea" about which direction he should go in? I mean, not that any of them have ever actually READ a comic book to know one way or another...

    The Vulture is Fine

    by marcspector

I am no fancy studio executive but it seems to me that when making a Spider-Man film it might be a good idea to use Spider-Man villains. Part of using a franchise like this is that a lot of stuff is already figured out. Stan Lee tested the market with the Vulture in Spider-Man #2. The Vulture tested so well that the character lasted 50 +/- years.

    by california_mtz

If Sony doesn't actively pursue Spidey then the rights revert back to Marvel. Which, of course, wouldn't be a bad thing but Sony would not let a billion dollar franchise slip away.I'm glad Raimi is sticking to his guns though. Go Raimi! Please make a GREAT Spider-Man film again! If you do, we will forgive your transgressions.

They do not have a villain which means they do not have a script. They are going to pick a villain and then crank out a sloppy script to get into production as quickly as possible. You can make a bad film from a good script but never a good film from a bad script. This project is screwed.

    by randomname7

If the studio won't learn from their mistakes, and let Raimi do it the way he wants to, I'm glad he's not just going to give in like he did with Venom in Spider-Man 3. What made the third movie so bland, was that it was basically two movies mashed together, Raimi's movie, Sandman, and the studio's movie, Venom. Raimi was fairly vocal that he didn't want to do Venom, but they basically forced it down his throat.

I think a new movie could be great like 1 and 2 as long as they pick a villian Raimi want's to work with, and they give him room to do what he wants with it.

Let's face facts. The film should have ONLY been about Venom. Raimi's STUBBORNESS included Sandman. If he got what he wanted and it was ONLY about Sandman, it would have ROYALLY sucked. Venom deserved to be the only villain in that film. Raimi insisted on the dumb-assed emo schtick, the retarded jazz dancing, etc. It wasn't that having Venom in the movie was a bad idea, it was keeping Sandman and all the dumb shit Raimi piled on that ruined the movie. I went back and watch the animated Venom Saga and it is LIGHTYEARS better than the film.

    by frankenberry

I'm actually leaning toward Sony's side of this debate. I mean, the studio actually wants the same villains many fans wants. Raimi knows how much the fans wanted Venom and currently want Lizard and Kraven. But does he use those villains? Nope. He wants to use villains like Sandman and Vulture - villains no one gives a crap about. Regarding Venom, Raimi could have at least done an uninspired-but-faithful version of the story, if Sony truly forced the villain on him. But I think it's safe to assume Sony didn't force Raimi to use musical numbers, street dancing, and an lame emo Peter Parker.

Sam Raimi is whats wrong with Spider Man

    by topfivevideo

honestly, I love Sam I really do. He has artistic integrity that most filmmakers don't have. He has a style that is all his own. Having said that, I think that what he's trying to do with the series really isn't true to the comics because he seems to only want to venture into territory that will push the character of Spider Man forward and not the series itself. Spider Man has some deep history with certain Villains and Allies... not everything has to be done for the sake of artistry. Personally I would love to see Spidey take on Carnage.

    by nomoredirtyjokespleaseweareyanks

Spidey 3 was his worst film, yet it was sublime at moments(Sandmans birth), y'know because he cared about it. There was obvious studio interference as Raimi was quite vocal about it but apart from all this... This guy made the Evil Dead Series for fuck's sake. Spidey 1 has it's problems but it at least felt like a comic book. The second is remarkably better(though I did not like what was done with Doc Ock's character), it pushed the characters further and worked as drama. Also this guy made Darkman, and the brilliant thriller A Simple Plan. Drag Me To Hell was also fun though it seemed even sillier than Army of Darkness at times. I'm willing to give this guy who has provided me with so much entertainment another shot, or even three...In the immortal words of Phillip J. Fry "So what do you nerds want?"

    Lizard and Black Cat

    by coma baby

It seemed like they had sequel villians in place from the start and if they would've followed what was already there in the story, the series would've been better and the villians wouldn't seem to be coming out of nowhere each movie. Lizard would seem to be the obvious, most natural villian since they introduced his alter ego already. They should've been developing Dr. Connors character as Peter's mentor a little more each movie but in any event he's right there for his transformation into the lizard. I always thought the landlord's clutzy cute daughter was being set up to become the Black Cat, so that was there too. For the 4th film you really wouldn't need Kraven, since fighting the Lizard while trying to save his mentor, Dr. Connors, would provide lots of dramatic tension. But if the suits demanded another villian Kraven would fit pretty naturally as someone who showed up to hunt the Lizard (who spiderman is trying to both save and defeat). I think Jameson's astronaut son was being set up as a possible villain (venom or that space wolf thing from the comics or something else entirely) as well but that got dropped. I think Spiderman 4 if it gets made, will be made by committee based on a lot of patched together marketing ideas. Like the 3rd one, too many people want to make too much money from it for it to ever be as coherent and good as the first two.

Seems Natural. He comes ready for all the Special Effects and raimi can cast the reoccuring Bruce Cambell character as Quentin Beck (some loser that is in and out of jobs but then realises he has a knack for gadgetry) I think it would add an essential part of Spidey that has been missing...humour

Would Sony prefer Anti-Venom, or the return of Norman Osbourne, or American Son, or that guy who runs Aunt May's homeless shelter, or the guy who controls machines, or the Parkour chick, or the guy who made it snow, or Raptor (good luck including a character whose motivation for trying to kill Spidey is he think's he's Peter's clone, Ben Reilley)? That quote above says everything you need to know about the "creative" executives at Sony. Who cares if it's good, just as long as they can trick the majority into thinking it will be. If it was up to Sony, the movie would be starring the cast of Twilight and Miley Cyrus, with music by the Jonas Brothers. Good thing Sony didn't make an X-Men movie in the mid 90's or it would have been written and directed by Rob Liefeld. It's a Spider-Man movie - make the movie and people will see it; make a good movie and people will see it again.

Carnage is a by-product of one of the worst eras in comics. He's a one-note, flimsy shitty excuse for a character. The best Carnage story I've ever read was the one where Sentry tore him in half just out of Earth's atmosphere. Seriously, what would the story be about? Carnage escapes prison, gets stuck to a symbiote, and kills people till Spidey shows up? Sounds....fun... Seriously people, there are better, more classic villains that can be used for greater effect. There are even characters that Raimi's already covered and didn't even come close to mining all the potential they had (Dr. Octopus, Green Goblin/Norm Osborn, Harry Osborn's battle with inheriting his father's legacy, Hobgoblin..). Re-to the motherfucking-boot please... And please leave that Carnage shit at the door.

Frankly, If It Was Going to Be Anyone Other . . .

    by kevinwillis.net

Than the Lizard, I had almost no interest. Yeah, I could go for the Vulture or Electro, and I could even go for a two part story--Lizard dominates part of the story, Black Cat dominates the other part of the story, but Mary Jane needs to be 100% behind Parker and no more relationship woes.Basically, Spiderman 2 was a fluke of a near-perfect Spiderman film, and that will never happen again, so they might as well stop. Although I watched Spiderman 3, and it was largely pretty good until the dance number and Petey hitting Mary Jane and then it just went down hill. Frankly, it would have been a pretty good film if the had just introduced Eddie Brock and kept Venom and the suit out for the next installment.
Spidreman 3: Sandman and Harry/Goblin Jr. cause the problems, Sandman didn't kill Uncle Ben but maybe accidentally put Aunt May in the hospital (thus, Spidey's vengeance) and, in the end, Sandman was soundly defeated and Harry gets put in a more permanent coma. Then, maybe after the credits, the symbiote crashes into Central Park, and the strange specimen is taking to Dr. Conners.
Spiderman 4: Symbiote escapes in Dr. Connors lab, is going nutty, Spidey shows up to help and there is an accident--the one that turns Connors into The Lizard and marries Spidey to the suit. Here, the Eddie Brock arc (introduced in 3) takes off, and it ends up being a 2 parter with Peter fighting the Lizard and Venom, with Dr. Connors being defeated--restored--and ultimately helping Peter come up with the solution to defeating Venom.
Then, Spiderman5: Black Cat and Electro. It's perfect.

I like Raimi, and I was "okay" with the Vulture, but the whole Vultress thing killed it for me. He says that he likes the classic villains, so why not Kraven and Lizard? Hell, why not Electro. What challenge is Vulture to Spider-Man really? Unless he's teamed up with someone. And if you're going to have Felcia Hardy in the movie, make her Black Cat. Not some totally new piss poor version of Black Cat. Honestly though, I don't mind if the movie isn't made. Maybe, just maybe, Marvel/Disney will get the rights back and reboot the series. Maybe cast someone who's actually hot to play Mary Jane. Someone not so wooden as Tobey Maguire. Maybe if they decide to touch on Venom again, maybe introduce Eddie Brock a few movies before he becomes Venom.

Honestly, if Raimi is pouting and holding his breath until he gets to use the Vulture (and, god help us, the Vulturess) then I say let him take his ball and go home to make more DMTH's and Evil Deads and let someone else make a Spider-Man movie without the damn Vulture.

this film is on hold because it's just a bad idea overall and EVERYONE knows it. Raimie wants to make it but the studio obviously doesnt want him to make it, so they'll stall with demands that ramie can't or wont want to meet. It's classic relationship bullshit

Let Raimi do his thing - The studio ruined S-M3

    by -=shin=-

Seriously, Raimi is a pure Lee and Ditko Spider-Man fan. He's always said that. It makes sense he would want to do a Vulture film. It's classic Spider-Man.

Once Venom was forced on him, look what kind of crap film we got. I don't really feel that more contemporary characters fit with his iteration of Spier-Man. Good luck Sam. I'm hoping you get to make the film you want to make!

Soup74, that's why the Lizard along with Kraven would make

    by big jim

for good villains. The Lizard wants to kill Spider-Man even though Spidey is trying to help him, all the while having to fight off Kraven who wants them both dead. You get that duality of two villains - one who hunts out of instinct and has no control over himself, and one who hunts for pleasure and is in complete control; one villain who is sickened by his actions, and one who takes great pride in his.On the other hand, I too have had enough of the sympathetic villain in the Spider-Man films. Whatever happened to a Bad Guy who was simply a bad guy? However, as long as Parker has nothing to do with Connors becoming the Lizard, as long as he doesn't feel guilty for him being a monster, as long as he has sympathy for him because they are friends, and as long as Spidey's motivation for the climactic battle in no way involves MJ or anyone else being kidnapped and held as bait, I'm on board.

Come on, they wouldn't even be able to show the real violence anyway, it just doesn't fit in the spider-man universe, not to mention a PG-13 rating. What's the point. Most of you give Raimi far too little credit...

    by the garbage man

...for ruining Spider-Man 3. Be honest with yourselves. Remove your replica chainsaw hands, set aside your 15th edition of "Evil Dead II," and please just recognize that if you were to remove every frame of Venom and Venom-related material you'd still have an absolutely woeful movie. Make no mistake, the suits certainly aren't out to help him make a great Spider-Man movie but Raimi is FAR from blameless for this franchise's faults. So far we've had: 1) a super-strong, super-agile, gadget-happy goblin-man; 2) a genius with deadly thought-controlled, multi-purpose metal tentacles; 3) another super-strong, super-agile goblin man with gadgets; 4) a guy with all of Spidey's powers and none of his morals or restraint; and 5) a nigh-unstoppable sand monster. And Raimi wants to follow all these dangerous villains with an old bald man who flies around in a bird costume? Might as well call it Spider-Man 4: Diminishing Returns.

    by bootskin

How bad ass could the Scorpion be? A man hired by JJJ to put on a suit and make a fool of Spidey (and of course, sell a shitload of papers..), suit/gizmo malfunctions and hired goon gets stuck. Blames JJ, looks for revenge. Enter Spidey, fighting a guy with all his powers, plus that nasty tail & all it's gadgets. This is the synopsis of the Scorpion's first appearance (he was basically the "Venom" of his time. Considered an opposite for Spider-man). I thin it could be adapted pretty seamlessly, plus a few plot points here and there to fill out the story and voila! Besides, Raimi could use the point of how cool those Clash of the Titans scorpions look, and how scorpions are "hot" right now. That should convince those money-grubbing turds.

    Reboot

    by david19

Skip a reboot, but consider a recast. 1 and 2 were awesome, 3 was embarrassing to watch, but no need to reset anything. I personally think James McAvoy would make an awesome Spidey. Any number of girls would make a decent Mary Jane, but something needs to be done with that. To carry that relationship over 4 movies will get tired. If 3 had been better I might still be interested in the ongoing Peter/Mary Jane soap opera, but now its just lame. 3 fucked up any interest in Gwen Stacy for me, which sucks cause she should have been there from film 1. Looking back there were a lot of missed opportunities from throwing in MJ so early on. My thought, consider a recast, and consider mining some of the storylines and character models in the Ultimate Universe. The Bendis version of Venom would have been fucking awesome, and instead they chose to have the meteor randomly land right next to Peter Parker. LAZY LAZY LAZY storytelling.

If thats parrt of their strategy they might want to notice the book is all about bringing back the old school villains right now. We just got back Electro, Sandman, even Hammerhead got to return. And apparently Mysterio, someone new donning the costume, will be making an appearance. Then there's Norman Osbourne, who I'm assuming they'd just keep dead in the movies at this point. You'd think they'd just trust Raimi seeing how he made that franchise what it is in the first place.

    Spider-man was never Spider-man

    by robin_morningstar

Spider-man has always been the sunnier side of comic book lore, and with every film they have tried to be so damn serious whilst shooting the whole angle in the foot.

They go for tragedy but dress the schizoid villain up as a Power Ranger. They go for love vs duty as a superhero but spend half the movie with the superhero not having his super powers. They go for the dark side of power and have it turn out to be...dancing. This franchise is all fucked.

Spider-Man should have always had Adam Brody (Seth Cohen from The OC) as a lively, witty Peter Parker whose spider-upped confidence loses him Uncle Ben but gets him the girl Gwen Stacey (which should have been Reese Witherspoon) and a duty to duel Dr Octopus (Larry Drake, Durrant in Darkman) whose gone rogue since an experiment for Norman Osborne, and bring in Green Goblin for the sequel and have a little incident on a bridge (bye-bye Gwen), exploited by a photographer Eddie Brock, and you can probably guess where that takes number 3.

But no, we get this shit.

If Sam Raimi wants to disagree with Sony, I'm afraid given he wants to turn Black Cat into Vultress, I'm starting to think it wasn't Sony insistance on any particular comic book meat but Sam Raimi's lack of respect for any of it that fucked Spider-Man 3.

    And the first two.

Glad you agree. I'm guessing you hate CGI? I think it's become a wheelchair to sfx artists who can't be bothered to walk. Did anyone ever see the animatronic life sized Hulk being considered before they went CGI? Oh man, if only they went with it.

They should reboot the Spider-Man series. Tobey Maquire looks about 24 in the first one, 28 in the second, and about 34 in the third one, they have to recast it's only sensible. If they signed him the back-to-back deal he'd look about 39 in number five. And if you're gonna recast one, might as well recast all, especially seeing as it looks like Tobey Maquire and Sam Raimi are both on the way out of the property.

Reboot! And Morningstar to write it!

    Thoughts...

    by jaka

I agree with people who've said that the cast looks bored. However, they looked bored in the first and second films, to me. What saved them was the villains. Then, in the third film, the problem wasn't that the villains weren't "bad" enough, or weren't well-played. It was that the shat out a Venom side story and the badly executed it. Message to studio: did you really not realize that you would be making a fourth film and therefor need a major villain? Well, Venom was the way to go! A full-length Spidey vs. Venom COULD HAVE been incredibly tense and very, very special. But you already screwed that up.Vulture, not the best choice for a villain. However, the real problem I had with that previous piece was the silly Vulturess, or whatever she was called in the story. The Vulture could make a great villain and you could tell a great story. Just don't get so full of yourselves (you OR Raimi!) that you think you can just go and start inventing silly ass characters that have nothing to do with the long, rich history of the Spiderman comic book. Gah. Done.

A sequel based on Kraven's last hunt; fearful symetary would take the franchise to a bold direction, i originally suggested this idea on the TBs only to have some uninformed asshole (manifestchaos) call me nuts or something of that ilk, because he belived Spidey shouldn't have any dark undertones..(as if the previous three were happy films.)the vulture is very old news and was always a boring villian if you ask me, i say get Kraven and lizard if not Vermin. Vulture is lame? Get the fuck out of here

    by continentalop

You know what makes Vulture great? He is an actual character and has a personality. Unlike Venom, who's personality is so one dimensional that people in Flatland think it is thin.
The best villain in the series has so far been Doc Oct, another villain many so-called Spider-Man fans called lame and boring. and the fan boys demanded Green Goblin over Doc Oct for the first movie as the villain. He was also a villain who people said had wouldn't be a good match against Spidey: short chubby guy with a bowl cut and glasses whose powers is METAL TENTACLES? The guy is just a normal human with robot tentacles? How is he going to compete against Spider-Man? Yet, on the big screen he ruled. Why?
Because he has personality and character, something that Vulture also has, and something that Venom (sole purpose to kill Spider-Man) and Green Goblin (Osborn had personality, Goblin didn't; which is why they decided to kill him off in the 70s) are just visually interesting villains. Good for a comic book, bad for movies where a villains motivation, pathos and passions are what make them great.
And for everyone who says Vulture couldn't fight Spider-Man because he is old - Peter Parker is a skinny nerd who fights villains, but everyone doesn't say that is ridiculous. Why? Because he has powers. Well news flash, so does Vulture.

    by ebonic_plague

Respect, but Vulture IS lame. Any character can be fitted with a good motivation to fight Spidey, but it still boils down to the on-screen image of Spider-Man in a fistfight with an old guy. At least Venom, Doc Ock, even Sandman had cool effects accompany their (admittedly sometimes thin) characterization... I can't imagine what could be exciting about a fistfight with a guy in a bird suit. He might be a good supporting villain, but even with really inspired casting (Malkovich?), I just don't see him carrying a whole movie. And with the 3-movie set-up for Lizard and a perfect opportunity to use someone a bit more interesting like Kraven in the same story, I think Vulture is a mistake and that Sony is wise to fight Raimi on this point. I'm not even going to comment on the idiocy of the idea of turning Felicia Hardy into the "Vulturess."

    by dirk_the_amoeba

I sure did not go to see any of the movies because the evil dead spoof director made them. And Spiderman one was a huge disappointment. Spidey 2 is great only in comparison to #1, and Spidey 3 sucked the unholy union of a goat and porcupines balls. Any director who cast Dunst, and made Tobey sing emo, can not be trusted.

How does the Vulture look any dumber than Spider-Man or any of his other foes? Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus, Mysterio, Kraven the Hunter...hell, even Venom looks ridiculous (I mean, where the fuck does that tongue and mouth come from).
I think people are mistaking muscles and size with menace. Al Capone, Osama Bin Laden and Adolf Hitler might not have been as big and tough looking as a biker or musclebound enforcer, but I think you could argue all three were way more dangerous and evil.

To quote Roger Stern, the best Spider-Man writer after Stan Lee, "Vulture is the best Spider-Man foe ever!" While not my personal favorite (Doc Oct gets that vote) I think he is a damn good foe and as Mr Stern pointed out, is kind of Spidey's opposite: Old and wise were Peter is young and inexperienced, and cunning and ruthless where Peter is energetic and optimistic.
Personally, I think Vulture's opportunity has passed to work as a villain (he should appear in movie two or three, when you could argue Peter is still young and relatively inexperienced) but I just disagree with those who say he doesn't work or lame villain. I think people are putting style over substance in this case.
Would I have him be the lone villain? No, because I think he isn't a true physical threat to Peter (which he shouldn't be, even in the comics Vulture was to smart to face Spider-Man on equal grounds, better to flee and kill him quickly when you got the chance, or wait until he is weakened) but if they had him working with Sandman in part 3, it would have been a better movie (as long as they got rid of that moronic "Sandman killed Uncle Ben" angle).

    by ebonic_plague

I think he *could* be an interesting villain for Spidey, if used correctly, but I don't think it will pan out for several of the reasons you listed. This is the age of 20 year old starship captains and fighter pilots, we can barely get real grown ups to play characters with "man" in their name, I don't think an "old" themed villain without at least a cool visual gimmick (Magneto) is going to fly (pardon the pun) as the chief threat in what is really just a 200 million dollar business enterprise. You know they'd want a villain that is going to be a physical threat (more action set pieces) and I'm not sure there is a way to make him visually "cool" enough for the test-markets. It'd be a rehash of Doc Ock and part 2 but with wings instead of tentacles. I'd like to see a game of wits like you describe but I don't see that happening in a tentpole action movie. I think Raimi blew his director-capital with his insistence on Sandman for part 3 and so some of the golden/silver-age characters that he wants are going to be lost causes. Frankly, I'm tired of intensely introspective Spider-Man movies, I want to see some fun action again (like the beginning of the first movie), I don't see that coming from Vulture.

I don't know. It is pretty much acknowledged that after Batman and maybe the Flash, Spidey has the best Rogue's Gallery.
Doc Oct, Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, VULTURE, Kraven the Hunter, Lizard, Kingpin of Crime, Scorpion, Mysterio...the list goes on and on.
(And notice I didn't even mention Venom on his list of best villains).

If ol Molty Vulty (it rhymes just say it slowly) can not be a sole villain, then that means he will have to be helped into his diapers and teeth by a secondary or even tertiary (Yes! I got to use tertiary in a sentence today, I am happy!)bad guy, and Raimi has so suckily proven he can not handle multiple bad guys in action. So, it makes sense to dicth Molty Vulty in favor of a bad guy that can hold his own without help, or at least who can hold onto his piss without having to run to the store in the middle of a fight for some depends. ' hang on chaps I need a pee break, and i gotta pick up some denture adhesive!'

    I agree, plague

    by continentalop

That Raimi blew SM3. Not because he used Sandman or Venom, but because he used them both and both horribly.
I could see Vulture and Sandman working together - Vulture as the brains and Sandman as a super-powered thug to act as his muscle. One supplies the motivation and smarts, the other supplies the much needed power to tackle Spidey.
As for Venom, I admit I am not a fan, but I think you've got to respect his fans by trying to put out a decent version of him. And to do that you need two movies to set him up - one involving the suit and introducing Eddie Brock, the second where the two combine to fight Spider-Man. Venom has such a convoluted origin that you need time to set it all up.
Finally, I will say Riami really blew using the Vulture in earlier movies because he works better when the Osborns are around. You could easily combine his origin with Prof. Stromm's and have him bear a grudge against Norman for stealing his inventions and framing him for embezzlement, and have him be a bitter man trying to get revenge against Norman (or his son if Norman is dead). Plus the entire flying wings could be based on his original designs, which you could say were used to create the gliders.
    Vulture, missed opportunity.

I have no problem with Molty Vulty's age. But I do think he too closely resembles Doc Ock (Oct), for him to be a featured villain. And after the fiasco of Spidey 3, they may be jittery,. But seeing as how all of this is just a bad rumor, you may still get your wish.

    by deelzbub

Venom should have been the focus of ONE entire film, but not 3. Way too early in the series. Should have saved it for 7. Because how can you top Spidey defeating 6 of his top foes in Spider-man vs Sinister 6? Full-on Venom story.

    by continentalop

As I said earlier, I think Vulture's time has sadly passed. He works much better as a foe of a younger Spider-Man, where the age difference is much more profound, and the symbolism of the generation gap is greater.
I just can't stand hearing people say he is "lame." Sorry, but Vulture is a great, classic Spider-Man foe.

If fans could write they'd be writers

    by mightymouse1107

As a comic book and comic book movie fan, I'm the first to say fans are both a treasure trove and a cancer on comic book movies. And studios are foolish if they let themselves be led around by the nose by fans whining about what they want.

So suits, listen up. Stop doing your damn "market research" and finding out what's selling titles or what villians are most "beloved". That got you a crappy Spider Man 3 movie that misused Green Goblin 2, Sandman, and Venom to no one's benefit.

Here's what you do. Get a good director who loves the source material (you have one.) Get a writer with the same qualifications, and make sure he/she has a good relationship with the director. Then tell them to make a good movie first, and a good Spider-Man movie second. Take a villain or villains that both of them love, and put what you love about them on screen. If you need to depart from canon to make it work, do so.

That is what will get you a good movie that will not only have good box office, but will keep selling DVD's for years to come.

Fans have no idea how to create a commercially successful film or a good film. If they did, they would be writers and directors.

I trust Raimi. If he has good ideas for the Vulture, go with the Vulture. If its Mysterio, Lizard, whoever... go with it. He'll make you a better movie than all the market research or whiney fan message boards ever will.

    This production is in trouble...

    by mr. murdoch

...and always has been. We never had any large, "official" announcement of Maguire and Dunst's returning, nor I think Raimi's, from the studio -- it was all just "implied" by various interviews with the principles. Then we get that wonderful story in VARIETY some months back about SONY really digging VANDERBILT's scripts, but Raimi NOT, thus some already brewing discontent. Raimi has since brought in at least two re-writers (and this is only the officially announced ones), and they STILL seemed no closer to a Feb production start. "Our hope is to start in Jan/Feb/March," they say... Well, doesn't sound like production is too confident, then. Word is that SONY was over-the-moon about Vanderbilt's script(s), which were initially planned as a 4-5 two-parter, and now were recently planned for 5-6, with a new team. It is my suspicion that SONY is now trying to force/push Raimi & Co. OUT, because they really, really want to see Vanderbilt's scenario made into the next Spidey pic(s). I would bet that Vanderbilt came up with something a little more edgy, with a little more attitude, and a little more contemporary appeal... I would be totally happy now if in fact Raimi and Co. walked, and let SONY move this franchise into a new direction. IT'S TIME.

    A minority opinion

    by kaitain

I loved Spider-Man 3, and was largely bored by SM-2. I have watched both movies around ten times each. SM-3 is just fuckin' great as far as I'm concerned, so long as you view it through the right prism. The story is all about Peter, MJ and Harry. The two villains are mere plot devices to facilitate the dynamics between the core trio. Peter's two fights with Harry are outstanding. The black Spidey period is fucking great, and the musical sequences are fantastic.

I regard all SM-3 haters as miserable fanboy curmudgeons who have forgotten how to enjoy movies. The only thing I really dislike in it is the out of place English model playing the reporter. She doesn't work at all. (Hope that's not why she topped herself in real life, poor woman.)

SM-2, on the other hand, is overwrought and frequently dull. It isn't saying anything new, it's not "the smart Spider-Man to SM-3's dumb Spider-Man", it's just a so-so summer blockbuster.

    Flame on.

    by sick fixx

need to remember that studios going with 'what's hot' at the moment is exactly what they need to move away from. Morbius is a very niche character that would not work in the universe of the Spiderman film series. I'm actually in agreement with the Kraven/Lizard faction of fans. The problem with most Spiderman villains is that they're stupid, for lack of a better word. Scorpion, Rhino, Vulture, Electro with his effeminate fishnet shirt, etc. Why they had to introduce every member of the animal kingdom to Spidey's rogues gallery because he represents an arachnid is beyond me.

I think you're right about Raimi. From what I've heard, he's a rich kid who's never had to try too hard to become what he has. I think Evil Dead was paid for by his parents or family members or something. Now, that doesn't automatically make his films shit (and actually, they're not) but as Joseph Cambell once said, "art comes from pain." I'm thinking Raimi has never really had to struggle in this life which is why his films always feel slightly homogenized to me. They always look a little flat and passionless. His lack of life experience comes through on the screen. Now contrast that to Cameron who was a school bus mechanic before he started making films. When you have to fight in life, you end up fighting for your art as well. Raimi never learned this. If he had he would have told them to shove Venom up there ass for S3. He never liked the character but put him in the movie anyway. Weak.

Also, Raimi has now had a break from the franchise, which is important because by the release of Spider-Man 3, he had been working on the same franchise 7-8 years, so I think alot of the problem with SM 3 was fatigue. Now that he's had a break he should be anxious to make the 4th film.

    by kammich

What happened to the Vanderbilt script that people were buzzing about? I would've thought that was complete enough to at least have a defined villain or two. As for everyone saying "the studio pushed Venom, and look how that turned out"... it turned out to make just under $900 million dollars worldwide, so I think its fair to say that "the suits" don't give a shit if the movie is an uneven headscratcher like Spider-man 3 was. But yeah, I still trust Raimi. I like the Golden Age villains, and I think Raimi has a real knack for aerial battles, so Vulture is okay with me. I'd much rather have Lizard, and I'm a sucker for Electro and Mysterio, but that might not translate too strongly.

It was just a "coincidence". That was the dumbest thing I've ever seen in a film. They could've made Spidey fighting Sandman or thieves in a museum and gets smashed into a meteor exhibit that the symbiote was inside of or something. Even that'd be better. Ugh. by macready452

as hollywood suit shit. If it aint Kraven it's a loser. I liked the Rhino idea above though. That would fall right in line with a Kraven plot. All of the Spidey movies suffer from BAD WRITING. It's not Raimi. It's not Tobey. It might be Dunst. But really...the closest we get to my friendly neighborhood smartass is in the first film in the cage with Macho Man "...did your husband make it?" Now that was even a shitty line but it was the closest thing to the real Spidey personality. For fucksake the shit has already been written.

A Studio denial / clarification like this...

    by v'shael

might indicate they're watching the nets to see fan-reaction and gauge accordingly. That's marginally possible.

I still think (given they like to kill their villains in each movie) that Kravens' Last Hunt is the best thing to adapt for the screen.

Does the Vulture have to be that old?

    by lfhlaw

Could he be like 40? I don't think he needs to be decrepit old like the comics, but if you make him slightly younger, I don't think that'd be as much of a problem. The problem I have is plot. You have an older guy who SUDDENLY decides he doesn't like Spiderman. Like most fans, I prefer the background set up for villain, like Doc Conners. He's been waiting in the wings the last 3 movies. When I first saw him in Spidey movie#1, I was like OMG there he is....and he'll be in a later movie, but ....still nope...unless the studios are pulling the wool over everyone's eyes.

Unless Raimi admits that Spider-man 3 was a clusterfuck...

    by thedarklinglord

And promises never to let that happen again, I can't say I really give a fuck either way who they use as a villain. I'm just not excited for another Spider-man movie at this point. Anymore than I'm excited for a new X-Men movie. The studios - and, to a degree, the writers/directors involved - have pretty much killed my enthusiasm for these franchises. Instead, I've got my comic geek hard-on going for Iron Man 2 and the next Batman.

That said, I'm actually fine with the Vulture as the main bad guy - provided they ditch the dumbass idea of the Vulturess. Personally, I'd rather see Raimi use Kingpin. Or at least introduce him into the Spider-man universe (along with the real Black Cat), while focusing on characters like Vulture, Scorpion, Mysterio and Electro - and maybe NOT killing them off so we can eventually have an epic Sinister Six sort of confrontation. I'm fine with some of the villains dying, or others being redeemed, but some should stick around to fight another day.

Also, unless they're going for pure, maniacal evil, then they shouldn't cast Malkovich as Vulture. Get Patrick Stewart on board. He's old and bald, but he could easily play a sympathetic villain with a depth of emotion.

SM2 was possibly the most overrated, uneven, badly paced pile of shit I've ever seen in my life, debuting a pussy-whipped Peter Parker whose a total wimp in his regular life, but somehow Jesus when puts on the costume (fuck, that subway scene was cringe-inducing). The writing was on the wall as early as SM1 when they couldn't even get the fucking Green Goblin costume right.

    Why not Ian Holm again?

    by terrynation

Tobey Maguire is a stupid choice to play Bilbo for two reasons- first, he's a shitty actor, period, and second, in FOTR, book and movie, it's clearly stated that Bilbo has scarcely aged since obtaining the ring. Granted, many years pass between the riddle-game and Frodo trucking off to Mordor, but why not get Holm back for the role, use makeup and stunt doubles as needed, and not fuck it up for sure by putting a hack like Maguire in the role? If McKellan is reprising his role, the ONLY other person from Jackson's films to reappear should be Holm. He made a damned good older Bilbo; why not a younger one?

Pick up a damn Spider-Man book

    by mightymouse1107

"...debuting a pussy-whipped Peter Parker whose a total wimp in his regular life, but somehow Jesus when puts on the costume."

Christ, you've never read a Spider-Man comic in your life, have you? That's the point of the character, he's a pathetic, nerdy outcast in real life who has no social skills, and escapes into a mask where he can fight crime and be a smartass hero. Spider-Man is just as much about Peter Parker's guilt complex and his need to escape his real life as it is his heroics.

And giving it the "Nolan treatment"? Crap, that's just what I was dreading after Dark Knight (which, for the record, I loved.) Not EVERYTHING can be "dark" and "edgy". Well, unless you are an immature hack with no sense of theme or characters who just wants to bounce up and down in his chair watching something that's "kewl".

I meant the Jesus comment literally...after he halts the subway car he collapses and (here's where I've gotta cringe) he's carried to safety in a sequence mimicking Christ's "descent from the cross"...after which, everyone in the subway car promises to keep his identity secret...oh, fucking COME ON.
And yeah, I read Spidey rather extensively when I was a kid, back when it was the best comic on the shelf, because it was the only deconstructive hero story going. Sure, he starts out a clueless wimp, but as he becomes more polished as a superhero, he becomes more confident in his personal life. And a crucial element in his maturity is his relationship with Mary Jane, who'd NEVER make him crawl like that bitch Dunst played. If anything, it was always Parker that was letting her down.
Raimi has no sense of subtlety or realism. Like it or not, in the post-TDK era, his movies are shown to be the cartoons they are. And I don't buy that bullshit that he was "forced" to make any of the screw-ups in SM3 by the suits...he overreached, and fell short by a mile. Same as with Lucas.

    S-M2

    by star hump

was riveting, true, but it really hurt the story when we kept seeing Spider-Man out of his mask. It happened far too many times. So much so, that it flattened the movie, let the air right out.

The director HAS to commit to Spider-Man the superhero, not Peter Parker the super-powered teenager. The thrill of the comics was the web-slinger himself, the character, the one with the craziest mask in all comics, with the best costume, the coolest powers (don't forget the web-shooters) - and on top of all that, he's a ball-buster, a smart-ass extroadinaire, one who can walk the walk - and on ceilings too. Raimi missed that in S-M2 by focusing too much on Maguire, even to the point of forcing us to look at Toby even when he was in costume and fighting super-villains.

The greatest mask of all-time, and they were afraid to use it. That's why SM-2 doesn't rate as a classic.

The comics deserve better than that.

Essentially that build up to the finale with the Sinister Six in Spiderman 6.
Number 4, focus is Lizard and Kraven but maybe have Rhino at the start, opening sequences.
Maybe 5 is about Hobgoblin with a Vulture cameo.
Six of course sees the sinister 6, which would comprise of Hobgoblin, Rhino, Vulture, Electro, Kraven and either someone like Doc Ock who was believed to have died but actually didn't, or someone like Mysterio.

    by ebixby

With both Osbournes out of the picture, plus Connors already developed from the previous films you have plenty of room to introduce BOTH Kraven and Black Cat. This is the BEST movie they could make at this point in time.
Easily done: The movie opens with Connors and Parker working on some experiment, the result is Connors full transformation into the lizard. Spiderman and lizard do battle but lizard gets away. Connors Tries to unleash the lizard in crime ridden areas in order to protect innocents from himself. This causes the crime bosses to hire Kraven to find this thing and kill it, But Kraven is competing with Black Cat to hunt this thing down. From t here the movie writes itself.... RAIMI DON'T SCREW IT UP! DON"T DO VULTURE!

OK, he is a ruthless killer, but against Spider-Man? Make me laugh. In fact, one writer got it right years ago when Vulch is cackling about how he's often defeated Spider-Man in the past and will kill him now. Spidey doesn't look impressed and points out "You know what, Vulch? I've thought about that and realized that every time I've faced you I had a broken arm or a bad cold or ... something. I was badly handicapped. Guess what? I'm fine now and, when all is said, you're just some old guy in a flying suit." POW! One punch and the fight's over. Which is really how it should go.

Sympathetic scientist again loses himself, possessed by evil. wreaks havoo and destruction. hangs MJ from yet another fucking precipice, blah blah blah, gets mortally wounded in final confrontation.

"Peter, I weep for my lost humanity!"

Connors dies. He is then buried in the cemetery for mad, somewhat sympathetic scientists, with Ock and Osbourne. Perhaps Connors has a young son who then injects himself with Lizard DNA, preparing for the day he, too, will terroize MJ, and. perhaps, hang her from a precipice or just watch as another hangs her precipice before he has a moment of clarity, preceded by an unlikely bout of amnesia.

    by rev_skarekroe

...Hollywood types hate the idea of hiring movie stars and putting them in masks. I guarantee you there was a meeting before Spider-Man 1 came out when some suit said "Does he even need to wear the mask at all? Superman doesn't wear a mask!" and all the other suits in the boardroom nodded their heads in agreement. See also: Judge Dredd. And if they ever make the Deadpool movie expect to see a lot of Ryan Reynolds' pretty face and very little of the mask or tumored up face the character has in the comics.

Maguire was great in those Ang Lee movies

    by mr gorilla

Ice Storm and Ride with the Devil. He should have stuck making movies with Ang. I think he was charming in Spider-Man 1&2, but by 3 the charm wore out. He was boring.
